A bail B is provided, in addition to the handle H, for carrying the lamp. The main handle sections H and H have alined' openings thereinto receive the bent ends B of the bail, whereby the bail is swingable about an axis in the plane of the rigid handle H,

dle H or down into a position alongside the generator and the handle H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In the folded-down position, the bail is close enough to the handle section H so that the latter and the adjacent part of the bail may both be gripped by the same hand. Oflset projections B on the rear handle section H may be provided to hold the bail in its upright position, thebail springing past these projections when it is folded down intentionally. The handle section H is spaced from therear of the gas generator so as to leave suflicient room there for part of the hand that grips this section of the handle. Suitable slots such asthe keyhole openings 11 in the handle section H may beprovided for hanging the lamp from a nail or the like.

The generator may be provided with suitable water feed-controlling and distributing devices, such as an outside controlled valve V which is'adapted to turn a rod V that extends through the water passage V and tube S into the carbide chamber and 'regiX water distributing device S may be loosely mounted on a button S carried by the end of the rod V. The gas generated may pass through openings F and a filter F into the gas chamber. The water control valve V is in the plane of the handle H but the handle section H is spaced far enough from the valve V so that the latter as well as the water filling cap W, are easily accessible.

While the improved lamp is shown and described in detail, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the con:

struetion without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim: 1. In a portable lamp, the combination of a case carrying lighting means at the front side thereof, a handle for said lamp secured to the front and rear sides of said ease and having sect-ions thereof spaced from the top and rear side of said case, and a bail connected to said handle and foldable down alongside said case.

' 2. In a portable gas lamp, the combination of a gas generator, a burnertip communieating with the gaschamber of saidgenerator and disposed at the front side thereof,

In a portable lamp, the combination of a gas generator; a burner tip communicating with the gas chamber of said generator; a

rigid handle for said lamp comprising three substantially parallel sections, two of which are respectively secured to the front and rear sides of said generator, the third being spaced from the rear side of said generator; and a bail pivotally connected to such front and third parallel sections of the handle and arranged so that its'free end is swingable into operative position above said handle and into inoperative position alongside said generator. I
