The :object of the invention is to provide means for dampingsound waves, particularly in connection' with means for permitting a flow of air from one point to another 6 as in the ventilation of rooms by air paing from the exterior of a building through window ventilators. v
The invention will be described in the following specification and with reference to .l0 the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a fragmentary view of a win! dow and window casing showin aventilator, constructed in accordance wit the invention, in rear elevation;
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the device on the line 2-2, Figure 3;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the device illustrated in Figure 2, a central section'of the device being broken away.
In my preferred form of structure, illustrated in Figures l, 2 and 3, the device comprises parallel walls 1 and 2, a bottom wall 3. and a top wall 4, the said walls forming a rectangular casing in which the wall 1 is 25 lintended to be placed exteriorly of-the room,
the wall 2 facing the room. Wall 1 is provided with an inlet l* at its base, and the wall 2 is provided with an outlet 2x at its top. The outlet 2* is controlled as to size by a sliding plate 5 provided with an operating thumb piece 6, any suitable means being provided for latching the plate in a desired position.
Secured within the casing and extending as a plate which rests upon wall 3 and extends upwardly in a. curve, the degree of the curve gradually increasing so as to rovide an crei-hanging portion 7", the tip o which second deflector 8 having a similarly formed curved upper extension 8". Extension 8* is reversed in direction relatively to deflector 7. -The'tip of the curved extension 8 of deflector 8 extends opposite to but spaced from the base of a third dellector 9, which deflector has an upper curved extension 9x lying opposite but spaced from the fourth deflectoi 10.v The curved extension 10x of the fourth deflector has a tip which lies adjacent the outlet.
In the use of the construction above delongitudinally thereof isla deilector 7 formed lies opposite, but spaced from the base of a scribed, air currents passing throu h the inlet 1x and thence passing through t e casing via outlet 2X have movements which are indicated by the arrows. The said arrows also indicate the direction of travel of the sound waves which accompany the air currents. It will be seen that the sound waves are repeatedly directed against each other. In other words, the sound waves moving in given directions are vrepeatedly directed against sound waves moving in contra-directions, and the' sound waves are destroyed by repeated mutual intreference. lWhen the sound waves. strike deilector -7, they follow the inner curved wall of the latter in an upward plath until the curved extension 7 directs t e waves downwardly and against incoming waves. By this mutual interference the sound waves are decreased in force. The
sound waves following the upwardly moving current of air are again thrown back upon each other by the detlector 8 and this action is repeated by the dellectois 9 and 10. In Figure 2 four deflectors are employed, but the number may conditions to be met.
The casing is preferably lined with felt or other sound absorbing material, and when the dellectors are made of metal their surfaces may be covered with felt or other suitable sound wave absorbing material, this augmenting the sound neutralizing effect of the device.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows As a new article of manufacture, a device for permitting the passage of air from one point to another whilst neutralizin sound waves accompanying the same, which consists of'a casing, an inlet at one face ofV the' casing and an outlet at another face thereof, and a plurality of deilecting walls intermediate the inlet and outlet, each wall having an overhanging curved extension, the curvature being directed toward the inlet, and the dellecting walls being alternately opposed in the curvature of their extensions, as and for the pur se set forth.
In testimony w ereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
AUBREY M. KENNEDY.
