IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE-BARB PINCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,5] l dated August 10, 1875; application filed June 19,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN DOBBs and BENJAMIN F. BOOTH, of Victor, in the county of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Barb Pincl1- ers, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of our improved pinchers shown as closed upon the barb. Fig. 2 is a front-end view of the same. a side view of the same, shown as open, and with the wire staple in place ready to be applied to the wire.

The object of this invention is to furnish pinchers which shall be. so constructed as to enable barbs to be readily applied to the wires of wire fences, even after the fences have been put up, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and el'ective in operation, enabling the wires to be applied quickly and eiiectively, and in such a way that they will not become loose or be lost oli'. rIhe invention consists in the pinchers made with curved and notched jaws, and provided with projections upon the inner sides of said jaws, to adapt it for use in applying barbs to fence-wires, as hereinafter fully described.
A are the handles of the-pinchers which are pivoted to each other by a bolt, B, and upon the forward ends of which are formed jaws C. The jaws O are curved forward, so that their forward ends may overlap each other when the pinchers are closed. Upon the inner side of each of the jaws O is formed a pro- Fig. 3 isv jection, D, which projects across the forward side of the other jaw, and serves as a stop for the wire to be pressed against in forming the barb. In the inner edge of the face of each of the jaws O is formed a notch to receive an arm of the staple in forming the barb. In using the pinchers an ordinary wire staple is placed in the space between its Open jaws, with its arms resting in the notches in the inner edges Of the faces of said jaws, as shown in Fig. 3. The jaws of the pinchers and the arms of the staple are then placed around the wire of the fence, and the pinchers are closed. This forces the arms of the staple past each other until they rest upon the stops D, and project in opposite directions, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and the formation of the barb is completed. In this way the barb is so firmly secured to the fence-wire that it will keep its place securely, and will not get out of place or belost off.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentn The pinchers made with the curved and notched jaws C, and provided with the projections D upon the inner sides of said jaws, to adapt it for use in applying barbs to fencewires, substantially as herein shown and described.
