UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTIGULATION OF DOLL MEMBERS.
' Application filed January 27, 1926. Serial No. 84,023. I
This invention relates to improvements in dolls, and more particularly such articles when termed of relatively flat pieces of material having articulated limbs and joints, and has for an object to provide a simple and attractive toy that is less easily damaged or destroyed by the very small children who play with it.
Another object of my invention is to provide convenient, attractive and durable means for uniting the legs of a doll to the body portion thereof.
Other advantages and objects will appear as the description proceeds.
More specifically consicered, my invention pertains primarily to the means whereby the legs of the doll are jointed to the body proper, and is an improvement upon the doll described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 739,324, filed September 23, 1924.
It is well known that jointed dolls aptly suggest movements of the human body, but that they are more liable to breakage and 'dismemberment than the rigid, one-piece, non-flexible dolls, and as a result of the tie tails of the. joints, many kinds of articulated dolls last but a short time before losing one or all of their limbs.
Not only does the present structure make a more serviceable doll, but by having the open or cut portions confined to the inner surfaces, the suggested likeness to the human form is not detracted from.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doll embodying my improvement; and
Fig. 2 is a. transverse section taken approximately along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 refers to the doll as a 7 whole, with the body portion 2 including head. The arms 8 are attached to the trunk or body portion 1 by a pin 41- extending from one side to the other.
The trunk is provided with a centrally disposed rectangular recess 5 at its lower portion, thereby forming two similar outer extensions 6.
The legs 8, preferably of the same thickness of material as the body, have at their upper inner ends the transversely formed rectangular projections 9 oppositely disposed in the recess 5 in contact with each other, or to otherwise express it, the upper outer corners of the legs are cut away angularly to receive the extensions 6 of the body portion, the contours of the respective legs and the body portions contiguous thereto forming the continuous thigh lines of the doll.
The t 'ansverse orifice 7 through the body extensions (3 aligns with similar orifices of the leg extensions 9, so that by the insertion of a pin theretlnrough, the legs will be articulated to the body in the manner described.
The construction of the body portions above described, it will be seen, securely holds the leg portions within the solid depending extensions of the body portion, thereby forestalling under the usual conditions of use of such articles the inadvertent separation 01" the doll members, due principally to the reason. that in the present structure there will be no undue pressure upon the pin to withdraw it from its place. \Vhile it will be found desirable to rivet the head of the pin at either end. as at l, in order to prevent its falling out, there will be no leverage possible to apply to those parts whereby they will be forced or broken away from the pin. so
I claim:
A doll formed from flat pieces, having a body. portion centrally recessed with a rectangular recess with a straight horizontal bottom and parallel vertical sidewalls at right angles to the bottom, so as to leave rectangular body extensions on opposite sides of said recess, and legs having the upper outer corners cut away to receive the body extensions and provide leg extensions that 91) enter the body recess in contact with each other, all arranged so that the outer contour of the legs and body portions are substantially continuous to form the outer continuous thigh lines of the doll, and means for 95 pivoting the leg extensions in the body recess.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HELEN SARGENT I-IIT CI-ICOGK.
