Description

April 3, 1928.
M. J. HARKLESS CIGARETTE LIGHTER Filed Sept. 13. 1926 Patented Apr. 3, 1928.
PATENT OFFICE.
EL J. HABILISS, l' HOIEWOOD, ILLINOIS.
CIGARETTE LIGHTER.
Application lled September 13, 1926. Serial No. 134,959.
This invention relates to cigar and cigarette lighters in general and more particuconditions wherein difiiculty is apt to be ex- 6 erienced in touching the cigarette to the ighter or holding it there until lighted. Such conditions for example, are present in connection with the cigarette lighters used on Aautomobiles where the necessity lfor paying attention to driving, the vibration ot the par etc. make it diicult at times to either touch the cigarette to the lighter or hold it there until li hted.
It is accor ingly an object of this invention to rovide in connection with the cigarette lig ter means for holding the cigarette in proximit to the lighter until lighted.
It is turt er an object of this invention to provide in connection with a cigarette lighter means for guiding the cigarette to the lighter without danger of burning the fingers and without materially distracting the attention from other things.
It is also an object of this invention to provide in connection with the cigar and cigarette lighter, cigarette holding and guiding means for facilitating the lighting or' the cigarette, which means may be readily moved to inoperative positionto permit access to the lighter for the purpose of lighting a cigar which mi ht be too large to be accommodated by the older.
It is also an object of this invention to provide an attachment for readily providing certain forms of cigarette and cigar lighters nowY inv use with the aforementioned means.
Other and further objects of this invention will be apparent as the same becomes better understood by referring to the specification and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein F-ig. 1 is a plan view partly `in section of a cigar or cigarette lighter embodying 4,5 this invention; and
Fi 2 is an elevational view of the same.
Re erring to the drawings more particularly, numeral 1 represents the body of the cigar li hter of the usual type which may so be of cy indrical shape having: reduced portion 2 at one end thereof w 'ch is threaded and secured to the dash or other suitable place 3 of an automobile by means of nuts 4, one on either side of said dash. Although this invention is illustrated in connection with cigar li hters of the type usually used on automobi es, it is to be understood that this invention may also be used in connection with other t pes of cigarette lighters. The -other end ofy the mount or body 1 is provided with a curled flange 5 surrounding an opening 6 in said end, which opening affords access' to a filament 7 operatively mounted in said body adjacent said'opening. A U-shaped spring clip 8 is removably secured on the body l-inwaidly of the curled flange 5 and has hinged thereon at a point equidistant from its ends va diametrical bar 9. The bar 9 extends outwardlyand across the end of the body.1 and is provided with a spring latch 10 ada ted to removably grip the edge of the said ody over the flange 5. A c lindrical cigarette holder or cigarette gui e 11 is mounted on the bar 9, extends outwardly therefrom and has its base adjacent the filament 7 so that a cigarette positioned in such holder may be lit by said filament. A funnel portion 12 is providedon the outer end of the holder 11 to facilitate entrance thereto of a cigarette. A cigarette 13 is illustrated in dotted lines.
It will be noted that a person driving a` car or otherwise enga ed in an occupation requiring close attention thereto, may very easily find the entrance to the cigarette 1i hter and in his search for such entrance will not be apt to burn his fingers because of the remoteness of the funnel shaped portion 12 from the filament 7 of the li hter, as well as the fact that when the hol er 11 is in operative position it is practically possible to touch the filament without removing the holder.
It will further be apparent that the necessity for holding the cigarette up to the filament after the entrance thereto has been found is eliminated by the use of the holder. In case it is desired to light a cigar which is too large for the holder, the latch 10 may be released permitting the holder to be swung out from in front of the filament.
By use of the spring clip 8 vin connection with the holder, the ordinary forms of cigar lighters may be readily converted so as to provide the advantages of m invention.
I am aware that many c anges may be i made and many details varied throughout wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and I therefore do'not wish Ito be limited to the details shown or described.
I claim:
l. A lighter of the character described comprising a mount, an ignition element operatively disposed thereon, and a cigarette guide or holder hinged tosaid mount and adapted when in operative position to coopcrate with said element to facilitate lighting of a cigarette thereby and when in inoperative position to permit access to said element for lighting a cigar.
2. The combination With a lighter of the character described including a mount andV ignition element thereon, l of a vvcigarette' guidelor holder having a spring clip associated therewith adapted to be removably connected to said mount for holding the inner end of said guide adjacent said element.
' 3. The combination with a lighter of the character described including a mount and ignition element thereon, of a cigarette guide or holder having a spring clip associated therewith adapted to be removably connected to said mount for holding the inner end of1 said guide adjacent said elementrthe gni-de being hinged to said clip.
4. A lighter of the character described comprising a mount, an ignition element operatively disposed thereon, a cigarette guide or holder detachably connected to said mount and adapted vto cooperatewith said element to facilitate the lighting of a cigarette theretate the lighting of a cigarette thereby, and
means for permitting the temporary removal of said guide from operative to inoperative position without completely detaching the guide from the mount when it is desired to light' a cigar.
In witness of the foregoing] I aix my signature.
