UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GQTTLIEB MUEI-ILEISEN, OF ALMA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR T0 NATIONAL SOIL CON- SERVATION COMPANY, OF ALMA, WISCONSIN.
MAIL BOX.
AppIication led April 4, 1924. Serial No. 704,216.
This invention relates to a mail box for use on rural delivery roads, the general object of the invention being to provide a box which is provided with a large compartment for receiving parcel post matter and the like, a small compartment for receiving letters and a sign board for containing the name and advertising matter.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the.l combination and arrangement of the severa] parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof with the compartments in open p0- sition.
Figure 3 is a side View.
Figures 11, 5 and 6 are detail views.
In these views, 1 indicates a frame which is supported upon the foundation frame 2 and which carries a casing 3, the front of which is Open and which has a partition 4 therein adjacent its upper end which divides the casing into a large compartment and a small compartment arranged above the large compartment. A door 5 is provided' for the upper compartment, this door being hinged at its upper edge, as shown at 6, and the walls of the opening extend outwardly with the end Walls inclined, as shown at 7, so as to hold the door in an inclined position when shut and thus prevent entrance of rain and snow. A holder 8 is arranged in this compartment for holding outgoing letters and cards. A tiltable member 9 is arranged in the large compartment, said member consisting of a bottom 10, a front 11 and the tapered sides 12, the outer lower corner of this member being pivoted to the frame by the pivot pins 13. When tlie member is in closed position its front will form a front for the large compartment and when it is tilted outwardly the bottom thereof will be raised so that the mail can be readily removed from the large comparti-4 ment. This member is provided with a stop 14 for limiting the outward movement therel of and the usual signal arm 15 is provided on the frame for indicating when the box contains mail.
A sign board 16 is supported at the top of the device and a name plate 17 is supported at the top of the sign board. Braces v18 are provided for the sign board.
,sign board and name plate permits the box to carry the name of the owner or of the farm in a position where it can be readily seen and advertising matter or notices of sales and the like can be placed on the sign board.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim. i
A structure of the `class described, comprising a framework, a casing carried thereby, a horizontal partition in the casing dividing the same into a small upper compartment and a large lower compartment, a door for closing the upper compartment, said door being hinged at its upper edge and the door opening having inclined end walls which act to hold the door in a downwardly and outwardly sloping position, a tiltable member in the large compartment consisting of a bottom, a front and tapered sides, pivot pins carried by the member at the lower front corner thereof for engaging the lower walls of the casing and a stop on said member for limiting its' outward movement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
