whereby when the same is rotating in one direction one of the drums will be compelled to rotate while the other will be free, and upon reversing said rotor the other drum will be caused to rotate in a reverse direction, while the first mentioned will be automatically freed from the driving mechanism, thereby causing the cable to move in the desired direction to either load the scoop or return the same to a loading position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base whichmay be anchored in any suitable manner in proper relationto the pile of material to be moved or slushed.
A casing 2 is mounted on the base 1, and adjacent one end thereof. In this casing is the rotator of a prime mover or motor, said rota-tor having a driving connection with a driving member or shaft 4. The shaft 4: is
enclosed in a tubular support in the form of a sleeve 5 which has its inner end suitably fixed to the casing 2, while its outer end is carried by a hollow journal box 6. The outer end of the box 6 is formed with a stud 7 fixed in a box 8 carried by the supporting shell or gear case 9. The shell 9 is mounted on the base 1. The outer end of the shaft at is journaled in the box 6 and is formed with a gear 10, a portion of its periphery protruding through an opening 11 formed in the journal box 6, as more clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawings.
A hollow shaft 12 surrounds the sleeve 5 for a portion of its length, and has on its outer end a gear 13, said gear being in mesh. with a gear 14 located in the shell 9. The gear meshes with a gear 15 which is mounted on a shaft 16, and also carried by this shaft is a gear 17, the latter being in mesh with a gear 18 carried by the shaft 19, on which is fixed the gear 14.
A drum 20 is journaled on the shaft 12, the former being provided with a wear sleeve 21, which rotates therewith The inner end of the drum 20 is provided with a flange 20 and suitably secured within the same is a ratchet ring 22, said ring having formed on the inner side thereof a plurality of clutch teeth or lugs 23 having inclined faces 24 and slightly inset abutment shoulders 24. A second drum 25 is similarly mounted on the sleeve 5, and is also provided with a ratchet ring 26 provided with lugs or teeth 27 having inclined faces 28 that are inclined in a direction opposite to the inclination of the faces 24, as more clearly illustrated in Figures 7 and 8. A pawl carrier in the form of a main driver or head 29 is carried by the inner end of the shaft 12, and pivotally mounted on said pawl carrier or main driver is a clutch pawl or latch 30, said pawl or latch shifting longitudinally of the axis of rotation of the shafts and drums when it swings on its pivot. This pawl rotates with the shaft 12, and has its free end formed with an extension 31 provided with diagonally opposed beveled portions forming shoulders 32. The inner or pivoted end of the pawl or latch is fitted into a guideway 32 formed in the outer end of the head or main driver 29.
One useful application of the invention is illustrated in Figure 1, wherein a cable 33 is iii shown trained around the pulley 3a anchored in any suitable manner near the pile to be moved, A scoop 35 is connected to said cable by a short length 36. The ends of the cable are secured, respectively, to the drums 20 and 25 so that when one portion of the cable is being wound on one drum it will unwind from the other. It is the purpose of the clutch pawl 30 to apply winding power automatically to either drum, accordingly as the prime mover is driven in either direction. For example in Figure 8 the clutch pawl 30 is shown engaged with the lugs 23 of the ring 22, and since this ring is carried by the drum 20 it is obvious that if the shaft 12 and clutch pawl are moved clockwise, corresponding movement will be imparted to the associated drum 20, thereby rotating the same to wind the cable thereon, while the other drum 25 being free will permit the cable'to unwind'therefrom. At the same time the scoop will travel in the direction of the arrow adjacent the dotted lines. After the scoop has been drawn to the desired point, and its return is to be secured, the direction of rotation of the rotor 3 is reversed, which action turns the pawl 30 in a direction that causes it to ride upon the inclined face and swing across into the path of the teeth of the other ring as indicated in Figure 8, until it assumes the position as shown in solid lines in Figure 9. The drum 25 will now be clutched to the driving mechanism, thereby winding the cable on said drum, whereby the scoop will be drawntowa'rds the apparatus.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction operationand many advantages of the" herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advanta'ges of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Icla'im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a base, of a reversely rotatable rotator and a supporting shell mounted on the base in spaced relation, a drive shaft operated by the rotator and extending across the space between the rotator and supporting shell, a tubular shaft around the drive shaft, gearing in the supporting shell, connecting the drive and tubular shafts, drums surrounding the drive shaft and located end to end between the rotator and supporting shell, the adjacent ends of the drums having reversely disposed rings of clutch teeth, and a clutch pawl carried by the tubular shaft and shift-able by the clutch teeth from the teeth of one drum to the teeth of the other drum and vice versa accordingly as the direction of rotation of the rotator and drive shaft is reversed.
2. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a base, of a reversely rotatable rotator and a supporting shell mounted on the base in spaced relation, a drive shaft operated by the rotator and extending across the space between the rotator and supporting shell and into the latter, a tubular shaft around the drive shaft having one end projecting into the supporting shell, gearing in the supporting shell connecting the portions of said shafts therein, drums surrounding the drive shaft between the rotator and supporting shell, and means on the tubular shaft and drums for alternately connecting the tubular shaft to one or: the other of said drums to respectively rotate them in opposite directions accordingly as said tubular shaft is rotated in opposite directions. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a reversible motor and a tubular support extending therefrom, of a; driving shaft within the support, a tubular drive shaft on the exterior ofthe support and geared to the driving shaft, rotatable drums surrounding the tubular support, and a clutch member on the tubular drive shaft and adapted to connect either drum thereto.
4. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a reversible motor and a tubular support extending therefrom, of a driving shaft within the support, a tubular drive shaft on the exterior of the" support and geared to the driving shaft, a drum loosely journ'aled on the tubular drive shaft, another drum in line therewith on the tubular support, toothed rings on the adjacent ends of the drums, and a shifta ble pawl carried by the tubular shaft and located be tween the drums, said pawl and rings having means for automatically shifting the pawl from the teeth of one ring to the teeth ofthe other and vice versa accordingly as the direction of rotation of the tubular shaft is reversed. v
5. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination'with a rotatable paw'l carrier, and means for rotating it in opposite directions, of two rotatable members to be driven, said members being located end to end and on opposite sides of the pawl car rier, a pawl pivotally mounted on the pawl carrier and rotatably driven by said pawl carrier, said pawl constitutingmeans for connecting the pawl carrier to either of the members, said pawl having the axis of its swinging movement different from its" axis of rotation, and means" for automatically swinging the pawl in one direction to cause one of the driven members to be operated when the pawl carrier and pawl are rotated in one direction and for automatically swinging the pawl in the opposite direction to cause the operation of the other member when said pawl carrier and pawl are rotated in the opposite direction.
6. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a drive shaft, of oppositely rotatable drums, a pawl rotated by the shaft and having a pivotal mounting thereon, and means for automatically swinging said pawl in opposite directions to respectively interlock with the difierent drums accordingly as said shaft is rotated in one direction or the other.
7. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a drive shaft, of oppositely rotatable drums, located end to end, a pawl pivotally mounted on the shaft and located between the drums, said pawl being rotated by said shaft, and teeth on the opposing adjacent ends of the drums that respectively are engaged with the pawl and automatically shift said pawl from one drum to the other accordingly as said shaft is rotated in opposite directions.
8. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow shaft, of a motor having a driving connection with the hollow shaft, said connection extending through the hollow shaft, winding drums rotatable with relation to the hollow shaft and located end to end, a clutch pawl rotatable with the hollow shaft and located be tween adjacent ends of the drums, said clutch pawl being shiftable in an axial plane to the hollow shaft to clutch either drum to the hollow shaft and secure their rotation in opposite directions respectively on the re verse rotation of the hollow shaft, and means bridging the space between the adjacent ends of the drums and enclosing the I clutch pawl.
9. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow shaft, of winding drums rotatable with relation to the shaft and located end to end, a clutch pawl rotatable with the shaft and located between adjacent ends of the drums, said clutch pawl being shiftable with respect to the hollow shaft to clutch either drum to the shaft and secure their rotation in opposite directions respectively on the reverse rotation of the shaft, means for effecting the automatic shifting of the clutch pawl accordingly as the shaft is rotated in opposite directions, and a flange on one of the drums enclosing the clutch member.
10. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow shaft, of a winding drum loosely journaled thereon, driving means extending through the hollow shaft and gearedto said shaft at one end of the drum, and means at the other end of the drum for clutching and unclutching the shaft and drum.
11. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow shaft, of a winding drum loosely journaled thereon, driving means extending through the hollow shaft and geared to said shaft at one end of the drum, a clutch pawl at the other end of the drum, said clutch pawl being rotatable with the shaft and shiftable with respect to the same into and out of clutching connection with the adjacent end of the drum.
12. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow shaft, of a motor, a shaft extending from the motor through one end of the hollow shaft and geared to the other end thereof, winding drums located end to end coaxially with the hollow shaft, said hollow shaft extending through one of the drums and having a portion located between the adjacent ends of said drums, and a clutch pawl located between the adjacent ends of the drums and mounted on said portion of the hollow shaft to be rotated thereby, said pawl being shiftable fromclutching connection of one drum to the other and vice versa to rotate the drums'in opposite directions.
13. In combination, a rotatable shaft, a-
radially disposed driving head rigidly fixed to the shaft, winding drums loosely mounted relative to the shaft, one upon either side of thedriving head, and a reciprocable dog mounted in a free end of the driving head remote from the shaft for alternate engagement with the drums to rotate them in opposite directions.
14. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a driving shaft, of means for rotating the driving shaft continuously in either of opposite directions, a second shaft surrounding the first shaft and geared thereto, relatively rotatable winding drums located axially to the second shaft, and means for automatically connecting either of the drums to said second shaft according to the direction of rotation of the shaft. 15. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a driving shaft, of means for rotating the driving shaft continuously in either of opposite directions, a second shaft surrounding the first shaft and geared thereto, winding drums disposed end to end and coa-Xiallly with the second shaft, and having oppositely set teeth on their opposing adjacent ends, and a pawl mounted on the second shaft and moved automatically by the drum teeth from engagement with those of one drum to engagement with those of the other drum accordingly as the shafts are rotated in one direction or the other.
16. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a driving shaft, of means for rotating the driving shaft continuously in either of opposite directions,
a second'shaft geared to .the driving shaft, winding drums disposed end to end and coaxially with the second shaft and having oppositely set teeth on their opposing adjacent ends, and a pawl pivotally mounted on the second shaft and movable automatically by the drum teeth from engagement with those of one drum to engagement with those of the other drum accordingly as the shafts are rotated in one direction or the other.
17. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a driving shaft, of a motor for rotating it continuously in either of opposite directions, a second shaft surrounding the first shaft and geared thereto, drums locatedend to end and coaxially with the second shaft, saiddrumshaving oppositely set teeth on their opposing adjacent ends, and a pawl pivoted on the second shaft between the opposing adjacent end of the drums and having oppositely disposed teeth that are. automatically moved by the drum teeth from engagement with those of one drum to engagement with those of the other drum accordingly as the shafts are turned in one direction or the other. 18. A'hoi'st, comprising a frame, a shaft, wo drums rotatably mounted relatively to the shaft, a main driver located between the drums, drum drivers carried by the drums, a pawl movable in a plane that is longitudinal of the drums and movably carried wholly by said main driver, said pawl having oppositely faced terminal shoulders that respectively and alternately engage with the drum drivers according to the direction of rotation of the maindriver, and a reversible motor operatively connected to drive said main driver.

A hoist, comprising a frame, a shaft, two drums located end to end and rotatable about the shaft, arota-table' main driver located between the drums and having a guideway in its outer portion, a pawl in the uide way movable in opposite directions in a plane that is longitudinal of the drums and having oppositely faced terminal shoulders that are movable respectively beyond the planes of the opposite faces of the drums, and drum drivers carried by the opposing ends of the drums and automatically engaged by the shoulders of the pawl according to the direction of rotation of the shaft.

and a pawl pivoted on an axis transverse to rotatable about said shaft, opposed drivers on said drums, a reversible moto'r, a main driver adapted to be operated by said motor, and a pawl pivoted on an axis transverse'to the axis of said main driver and located in a plane passing'through the longitudinal axis of the said shaft, and adapted to be rocked on its pivot for engaging one or the other of the said drivers, in accordance with the direction of rotation of said main driver.
23. In a hoist, the combination ofa frame;
a shaft supported in said frame, two drums rotatable about said shaft, opposed drivers on said drums, a reversible motor, a main driver adapted to be operated by said motor, and a pawl transversely pivoted to said" main driver and having oppositely extending terminal teeth located at points-substantially equidistant from its pivot, said pawl being adapted to be rocked on'its pivot for engaging one or the other of the said drivers,- in accordance with the direction of rotation of said main driver.
24. In combination, a pair of winding drums on a common axis and disposed end to end, a driving member rotatable on the axis of the drums betweenthe opposing adjacent ends of the same and having a portion disposed radially thereto, and a reciprocable dog having engagement with the free end of the driving member remote from the shaft for alternate engagement with the drums to rotate them in opposite directions.
