The invention relates to pencil vending machines and has for its ob]ect to provide a pencil vending machine, coin controlled and provided with means whereby upon" the 1n-' sertion of a coin in the machine a pencil will be released therefrom.
A further Object is to provide :a pencil vending machine comprising a swinging pencil carrying frame and coin control means which normally locks and holds the free end of the frame against movement and in which a coin is received for releasing the free end discharge opening and where they will pass of the frame and allowing the frame to swing to a position where a pencil will be discharged therefrom.
A further object is to form the pencil remeans for preventing swinging of the frame a d free end of the frame and allowing the same to-swing over a discharge openingfor discharging a pencil therefrom. Also to provide stationary flanges positioned above the between adjacent pencils during the swinging operation of the: frame before the free end of the frame is over the dischar e opening, thereby limiting the number of pencils discharged from the machine. A further object is to provide in combina tion with the free end of a pivoted frame of a vending machine coin controlled means comprising a stationary member having a pivoted lever, one end of which cooperates with a shoulder of a slidable plate, which F plate carries a coin receiving hopper, and
which lever is provided with an arm underlying the coin receiving hopper and against which a coin engages for tilting the lever for releasing the plate and allowing inward movement of the hopper and plate'and to which hopper is connected the free end of the frame. Also to extend the shaft on which the pivoted lever is mounted through an elongatedslot in the plate thereby allow- I ing freedom of movement of the plate.

Pivotally mounted within the casing the pins 6 is a vertically disposed pencil receiving frame 7 and which'frameis formed receiving channels 9., in which the ends of the within the machine may be seen by the pur- I from angle members 8 which form the pencil pencils are received. Angle members 8 have their flanges secured together by means of rivets 10, thereby forming a rigid struc- .ture for supporting a plurality of pencils,
which pencils during the filling of the frame are placed therein through the upper open ends 11 of the channels. The opposite sides of the frame are braced in relation to each other by means-of the connecting bars 12, therefore it will be seen that both sides of the frame will move inwardly and outwardly simultaneously. Secured to the innersides of the casing 1 by means of screws 13 are plates 14,. one of said plates being provided with a U-shaped portion 15 which receives the removable coin box 16 and connecting the U-shaped member 15 and the other plate 14 is a horizontally disposed angle bar 17 which is disposed beneath the lower end of the pivoted frame 7 and is provided with upwardly struck horizontally disposed arms 18 which support the pencils 5 within the channels 9, and with which the lower pencil 5 has a sliding engagement when the lower end of the frame 7 is swung inwardly. Secured to the ver tically disposed plate 19 by means of screws 23 which extend through vertically disposed slots 24 therein are adjustable plates 25, the upper ends of which terminate in forwardly extending flanges 26, which flanges terminate adjacent the inner sides of the channels 9 as clearly shown in Figure 2 and in positions where they will enter between adjacent pencils 5 as the frame is swung inwardly, thereby preventing discharge of a predetermined number of pencils,- thereby allowing a single or plurality of pencils to be vended at a predetermined. price. Angle member 17 is preferably provided with an upwardly inclined spring 27 of the leaf type for partially supporting the pencils, however this maybe eliminated if desired.
The coin control mechanism is preferably entirely supported by one of the plates 14 as show'nin Figures 4 to 7 inclusive. Plate 14 referred to is provided with inwardly extending lugs 28 which are preferably welded I to the lugs 29 of the plate 30, however for purposes of'illustration rivets 31 are shown. Plate is in spaced relation to the plate 14 and in a'plane parallel thereto, and is also connectedto' the plate 14 by means of a shaft 32. S'lidablymounted in the recesses 33 in the adjacent sides of the lugs 29 and 28 is a vertically disposedplate 34, which plate has a recess 35 and a plurality of shoulders 36, and with which shoulders a flange 37 carried by the lever 38 cooperates for locking the plate 34 against inward movement until the lever 38 isf'rocked'upwardly at its inner end to a position where the flange 37 thereof will be out of the path of the shoulders 36. Lever 38 is rocked downwardly at its outer end by the weight of a coin engaging the horizontally disposed flange 39 thereof. Plate 34 is provided with an elongated aperture 40 through which the shaft 32 extends, therefore it will be seen that the pivoted lever 38 which is rockably mounted on the shaft 32 will remain stationary asfar as the pivotal point is concerned whenithe plate 34is movedinwardly. It will also be noted that the weight of the inner endof the pivoted lever38 will move which flange underlies the hopper 42, and its weight will rock the lever 38 for releasing the plate 34 thereby allowing the' plate34 as well as the hopper 42 to move inwardly, and as the flange 39 does not 'move', it is obvious the coin will be released from the hopper as the hopper is moved inwardly and will drop into the removable coin receiving box 45 disposed below thesame. Slugs and coins whichare not of the proper size or weight will be discharged into the coin box 45 through the opening 46,- however the plate 14 is provided with a slotted U-shaped member 47 havingits slot 48 in registration with the coin entrance of the hopper for limiting the size of a coin, that is the diameter, that may be inserted in the device. In operation, t-he operator drops the coin in the chute 43 and it passes through an operation and mechanism as above set forth; then the operator places his finger against the member 49, l 7
forces the same inwardly, and as said member is carried by the plate 41, the hopper and the plate 34 are forced ii'nvardly. Plate 41 is provided with an inwardly extending flange 50 having an L-shaped slot 51 therein, andin which L-shaped slot, that is the vertically disposed portion 52 thereof, the headed lug 53, which is carried by the lower end of the frame 7 at one side thereof, is disposed. It will be seen that as the hopper and the flange 50 are forced inwardly, the lower end of the frame 7 will also move inwardly to a position wher'ethe lower pencil 5 will be: discharged therefrom, To return the hopper and plate 34 to normal position a coiled spring 54 is provided, which coiled spring is connected at 55 to an arm 56 carried by the inner end of the plate 34 and is anchored at 57 to the forward side of the casing 1, therefore it will be seen that the removable parts, after an operation of the device, will be immediately returned to normal locked position. By providing the shoulders 36 in stepped relation to each other, it will be seen that the locking operation will immediately start upon the outward return movement of the'lower end of the frame 7 thereby preventing a pencil purchaser from allowing partial return of the frame for again forcing the pivoted frame inwardly for delivering pencils without the usual coin control mechanism. From the above it will be seen that a pencil vending machine is provided which is simple in construction, the parts reduced to a minimum and one which is positive in its operation and which may be cheaply manufactured and sold. i
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is l. The combination with the free end'of a discharge frame of a vending machine, of coin control mechanism for said free end, said mechanism comprising a coin receiving hopper, a plate to one side of said coin receiving hopper and having a recess therein, said plate being slidably mounted and supporting the hopper, a fixed shaft extending through an elongated aperture in the plate, a pivoted lever mounted on said shaft, a flangecarried by said lever and disposed in the recess of the plate, shoulders within the recess of the plate and with which said flange cooperates, a coin engaging flange carried by the other end of the lever and underlying the coin hopper, said hopper and plate being simultaneously movable inwardly and outwardly.

A coin controlled mechanism comprising a plate, outwardly struck lugs carried by said plate, an auxiliary plate in spaced relation to the first mentioned plate, members carried by the auxiliary plate and secured to the lugs of the first mentioned plate, a hopper adjacent the auxiliary plate and outside thereof, a spaced plate carried by the hopper and slidably mounted in bearings of the lugs and inwardly extending members, a shaft connecting the first mentioned plate and the auxiliary plate and extending through an elongated aperture in the hopper carried plate. a pivoted lever mounted on the shaft, a locking flange carried by one end of the lever and cooperating with the hopper carried plate adjacent one end thereof, a coin engaging member carried by theother end of the lever and underlying the hopper and means for simultaneously returning said hopper and hopper carried plate to outward position after an inward movement thereof.

The combination with the free end of a pivoted discharge frame of a vending machine, of a coin control mechanism for said free end, said mechanism comprising aplate carried by one side of the frame in oil-set relation and movable therewith, a stationary plate to one side of the frame and in which the first mentioned plate is slidably mounted, a hopper carried by the first mentioned plate and movable therewith, and a coin controlled pivoted latching member-carried by the stationary plate and extending into thehopper.

The combination'with the free end of a pivoted discharge frame of a vending machine, of coin control mechanism for said free end, said mechanism comprising a plate carried by one side ofthe frame in offset relation and movable therewith, a hopper carried by the plate between the plate and the frame, a stationary plate, the first mentioned plate being slidably mounted in the stationary plate, a pivoted detent. between the hopper and the slidable plate, said detent being pivotally supported by a pin carried by the stationary plate and extending through an elongated aperture in the slidable plate, an ear carried by said detent and cooperating with a stop carried by the slidable plate and an ear carried by the detent and extending into the hopper in the path of a coin.
5. The combination with the free end ofa vending machine frame pivotally mounted, of a coin control mechanism,' said mechanism comprising a movable plate rigidly carried by the free end of the frame, a stationary plate, said movable plate being slidably mounted in the stationary plate, a
hopper carried by the slidable plate and i movable therewith, a detent between the slid-' able plate and the hopper and forming means for locking said slidable plate against movement, a coin engaging member carried by the detent and extending into the hopper, said detent being supported by a pin carried by the stationary plate and extending through an elongated aperture in the slidable plate and spring means cooperating with the slidable plate for normally forcing the same to inoperative position. 1
