This invention relates toyarn ballooners.
In unwinding yarn from cones, such for example, as silk, cotton, or other yarn, it is the usual practice to carry the cone within a pan or other support and to unwind it by pulling directly upwardly upon the thread or yarn. This causes the thread to bind against the body of the cone and when it encountersany knots it usually breaks the yarn. When sillr is used, extreme dilliculty is experienced in splicing the yarn or else the entire batch has to be discarded.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted aboveand objects of such invention are to provide an unwinding device which causes the yarn to balloon, that is to say, to project itself substantially radial 'ly outwardly from the cone, although one portion of the yarn may be pulled directly upwardly. The device provides means interposed between the straight, upwardly extending stretch of yarn and the come so as to cause the intermediate portion of the yarn between the cone and the device to bow outwardly in a big loop and to thus draw directly outwardly from the cone and not upwardly therefrom, thus avoiding any possibility of the yarns becoming entangled in knots or projections from the cone.
Further objects are to provide a device which although possessing the characteristics noted above does not have any moving parts, but in which the parts are stationary and the yarn itself travels about the parts, thus avoiding any wear whatsoever.
Further objects are to provide a device For unwinding yarn from a cone in which the parts are adjustable to accommodate yarns of difierent sizes, and in which the device is securely supported so as to maintain it in proper relation to the axis of the cone.
Further objects are to provide a device having the characteristics enumerated above which nevertheless is of extremely simple construction, which is easily produced, and which does not require a great accuracy of adjustment.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the device comprises the usual. pan 1 provided with an upstanding central portion 2 upon which the cone slipped. The cone is regularly formed. upon a conical core 3 usually of cardboard, and is usui'tlly wound so as to provide a cone of yarn, as indicated by the reference character 4-.
In nacticing this invention, the pan is provided with any suitable means for supporting the vertical upright 5, For examplc, it may be providedwith an apertnrcul lug 6, which threaded for the reception 01 the lower threaded end oi the upright 5. This upright carries a slidable member 7 which may be locked thereto by means of the set screw 8, which latter may be formed in the manner of a thmnb nut or wing nut. The member T'isprovidcd with an outwardly projecting arm 9 which is rigidly secured thereto in any suitable mannor as for example by means of a threaded portion screwed into the member 7 and locked thereto by the lock out 10, as shown in Figure]. The member 9 extends out- Wt'l-Pdly and downwardly and carries a ring 11 atits outer-[end in axial aliginnent with the cone. 'lhisring is provided with a hottoindisc 12 which may be integral with a fian e or sleeve 13 secured within the rin slipped outside of the upper end of the core 3 and is preferably provided with bevelled lower edges 19. The sleeve or mem ber 16 is provided with an upwardly extending annular flange 20 which is arranged in spaced relation to the upturned flange 15 of the disc 12, it being noted that such upturned flange 15 is slightly smaller in diameter than the internal diameter of the flange 20.
In using the device, the yarn is led from the cone upwardly over the flange 20 beneath the flange 15 and threaded through the sleeve 14. It then passes upwardly to the winding mechanism.
When the device is in use, the "yarn balloons out into the form indicated at 21 in Figure 1, and as the cone continues to unwind it assumes various positions, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
It is to be noted that there is not a direct upward pull of the yarn from the cone as in the usual unwinding operation, but instead, means are provided for causing the yarn to balloon outwardly so that it pulls in a radial plane from the cone. The upper portion of this revolving loop is deflected downwardly between the flange 15 and the flange 20, as shown in Figure 3, so as to complete or maintain the looped or ballooned formation of the revolving loop.
It will be seen, therefore, that the tendency of the yarn to break from becoming entangled with knots or projections from the cone is greatly reduced by this invention as the yarn draws away from the cone in a radial plane and does not draw directly upwardly therefrom.
From actual tests conducted with a device constructed in accordance with this disclosure, it has been found that the yarn freely unwinds and does not catch upon knots or projecting portions, but bows outwardly and maintains a revolving loop so as to avoid any possibility of entanglement.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
We claim:
1. An unwinding, device for yarn comprising means for receiving the yarn, a pair of members positioned above the yarn receiving' means and of annular contour and adapted to have the yarn threaded between such members, one of said members having a centrally located discharge aperture through which the yarn is drawn, said members being adapted to depress the yarn above the yarn receiving member, whereby a looped formation of the passing yarn is maintained.
2. An unwinding device for a cone of yarn comprising a support for positioning the cone of yarn with its axis upright, a meniher adapted to engage the upper end of the cone and having an annular flange. and a. second member positioned above said first mentioned member and having an annular flange arranged in spaced relation to said first mentioned annular flange and having av central aperture, said members being adapted to have the yarn threaded between the annular flanges and passed through the coin tra l aperture of said last mentioned member. whereby the yarn may be drawn directly upwardly from said last mentioned member and will balloon outwardly between the cone of yarn and the annular flanges.
3. An unwinding device for a cone of yarn comprising a support for positioning the cone of yarn with its axis upright, a member adapted to engage the upper end of the cone and having an annular flange. and a second member positioned above said first mentioned member and having an annular flange arranged in spaced relation to said first mentioned annular flange and having a central aperture. said members being adapted to have the yarn threaded between the annular flanges and passed through the eentral aperture of said last mentioned member. said second mentioned annular flange being positioned slightly within said first mentioned annular flange to cause the yarn to be deflected angularly downwardly as it passes towards the central aperture.
4. An unwinding device for a cone of yarn comprising a base member provided with an upright central portion adapted to receive the core upon which the cone of yarn is wound, a member removahly attached to the upper end of said core and having an annular upstanding flange at its upper end. a. support extending upwardly from said base member. a laterally projecting arm carried by said support. and a second member carried by said arm and positioned over said first mentioned member. said second member having an annular flange spaced inwardly with reference to said first mentioned ammlar flange and having a. central aperture. whereby the arm may be threaded between said flanges and may pass out 'ardly through said central aperture.
5.
