The main side frames of my combination chair and step-ladder consist of inclined Vvfront leg members 1 and upright back members 2,preferablysecured:relatively to each other by meansl of inclined brace members 3 and 4 attheirouter sides and by means of substantially horizontal brace members 5, the back members 2, being staggered, are positioned upwardly relatively to the leg niembers l. -These`si`de frames, there being two in number, aie spaced from and secured relatively tone'ach other by Vmeans Vofaback seat member 6 intermediate the upper andlower ends of the frameset the vupper ends of the leg members l, aback supporting *bracey member 'Tat the upperr ends of the upright vback members 2, and'astep meinber intermedi-` ate the ends ofthe leg members 1. At the back sides and near the'upper ends of eacli of the back members 2 are provided a plurali ty of spaced'a part, corresponding notches 22L whichy ai'e adapted' to receive a rod 9 secured at its ends tothe upper ends of the shiftable rear leg members 10. Thus, it will be 'seen that in order to shiftthe strips 13 to permit the rod 9 to be positioned in the different notches 21, the strips 13 or the brace 15 connecting the same are shifted upwardly and outwardly, spacing the strips from the back side of the members 2,V permitting the rod 9 to be positioned :in the notches desired. The strips 13arethenshifted inwardly and permitted to drop, thus locking the rod 9 in the notches in which the same is positioned and providing a pivotal lconnection at the vpivotal connection with the main side frames relatively to said side frames, there is provided'a U-sl'iap'ed rearleg positioning inember 16,jwhich is pivotally connected at its 7 sides and near the rear cross portion thereof intermediate the ends of the members 10. The side portions 16a of the U-shaped meniber 16 extend forwardly through positioning members, preferably staples, 17, secured to the outersides and near the upper ends of the inclined braces 4. Theseside portions 16 of the member 16 are provided'at their lower edgesv witha plurality of notches 16h, which are adapted to receive the lower horizontalfportionfs of the staples 17. At the forward ends of the'side portions'16a'are provided grip portions 16c for raising the same at their forward ends and releasing the same from positive engagement vwith the .staples 17. lt`will be noted that by raising one of the side portions' lafof themember 16, both' guide portions Vare raised simultaneouslybyreason of the integral construction-of the member 16. To the middle portions of the cross or diagonal braces l2 of the rear leg members 10is secured the one end of Va tension spring 18 which is secured at its op,- posite end to the cross portion of the member 16, adapted to raise the same at its rear portion and retainf the side portions 16*1 thereof -in staples 17. At 4the upper side `and near the :rear portion of Ithe rear seatmember .-6 :is secureda back positioning member S32 which is ,provided with a longitud-inalslot 32a for receiving the lower end of the back rest member 31. This member 3l is positioned at its upper end in engagement with the back supporting brace member 7 and is held in engagement therewith and within the slot 321l of the member 32 by means of a tension spring 33 secured at its upper end to the back side of the member 31 and at its other end to the seat member 6. The back positioning member 32 is also provided at its frontportion with a cutaway portion 32b into which the lower end of the member 31 may be positioned and retained in said position by the spring 33.
On the outer sides of the inclined braces 3 of the main side frames are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends the chair arms 34, which are adapted, when in downwardly' shifted positions, to rest on the chair arm rests 35 secured to the front sides of and intermediate the ends of the braces 3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The normally rear ends of the arms 34 are provided with bifurcated portions 34a, which are adapted tol straddle the chair arm brace members 36 secured near the front portions of the outer sides of the members 2 for stabilizing the chair arms when in a downward position. It is obvious from this construction, as illustrated in the drawings and disclosed in `the foregoing specification, that there is arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of Y my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
I-Iavingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

Inra device of the class described, a frame provided with Va seat member intermediate its ends, a rear leg means pivotally connected to near the upperportion of said frame, means in connection with said frame and said rear leg means for variously pivotally connecting and locking the same relatively 'to eachother, resilient rear leg positioning means in connection with said frame and said rear leg means for simultaneously engagingand disengaging both sides of said other intermediate their ends, 's and 4'another seat vmember pivotally connected to the front portion 'of said first mentioned seat member.
