CORPORATION OF- ILLINOIS- ROTARY CUTTEB.`
v Application filed December 15,1924. Serial 1\.T"o. 756,110.
as an attachment forprinting presses or folding machines, forcuttingor slittingav folded sheet or web. of paper as vit passes through the machine or press.`
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rotary cutter. ofthisl type for use in the manufacture of books, magarinesv and various other articles' which will insure a clean and uniform out.` 'I`ov this end the invention consists inV certain: novel fea;-A turesof construction. andl combinations and arrangementsV of parts as. will hereinafter be more fullypointed 'out and claimed.. -v In the accompanying drawings. I ha-ve illustrated one complete example of the physicording to the best mode Iv have thus `far devised for the practical application of the vprinciples of lmy invention.l While I shall refer tothe machine of my invention as a ,paper cutter, it will be 'understood that the invention is oapable'of use in various other ways, and therefore I ldo not limit myself tothe physical embodiment of the invention as an attachment for folding or, printing machines.` n
Figure 1` is a plan view showing so much of the machine as is necessary foranunder` standing of 4its construction and operation, therotary cut-ter being illustrated in operative relation'to the nipping or feed rolls forv located below thel plane of lthe feed roll the paper web or sheet.
the latter view, parts being Shown in .dotted lines for convenience of illustration.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view at line 4-4 of Figure 2, showing the relation of the cutter and. feed rolfls to the leads of the vpaper web. 1
Figure 5 is; an .enlarged sectional detail view. of the cutterand cutteihead and conneetions.
It will be understood that the'V device 'of the invention is designed to slit or out the folded, or other edge, of av paper sheet or ew of thepartsY webyand in the drawings the maehineis adapted to cut the left edge of the paper in Figures. 1 and 2,- the leadsof the paper ,beingA indicated in Figure 4 bythe dotted lines with}-ar1.ows. f i i In the; drawings I have indicated asl-'ia part of the frame of aprinting or folding inachineftogether with a4 pair offroller shafts 2'and 3 having thereon the usual or standard form yof* nipping or .feed rollsA 4 and4 arranged at suitableintervals and in the required. number along the length of the shafts.` Theoperating shaft 2 is shown as journaled in bearings in the frame 1", vand this shaft may be driven froma `suitable source of'power for actuating both the feed rolls and the rotary cutter.
I 1 70 The short shaft Bin .the'nature of a'cou'n-A tershaft is disposed parallel with the operating shaft and inappro-Ximately ythe same horizontalplane, in order `that thetwo sets of feed rolls'4 and 4 and 5 and 5 will registerj as complementary feed Vdevices for the` paper sheet or web. The feed shaft 3 lis journaled inbearings 6 and 7 ywhich as here Yshown 'formparts of supporting yokesl 8 and 9. YThevshafts are shown as foreshortened for convenience of illustration and it will be understoodY that between these end yokes .8
land -9 other intermediate yoles areused if-r required. 'Ihe 4yokes are fashioned with attaching hubslO, 10 whichr arey adjustable both, `longitudinally and circumferentially on a supporting bar 11 which latter `bar is t-he bar. by means of af set bolt 15. yThefree l end of the lever is equipped withja tension spring 16 which is anchoredto a bracket 17 oni'the frame 1, and it will be apparent y that the spring tends toirook the bar 11 `in"r its .bearings and swing the shaft 3V audits y rolls 5 toward. the shaft- 2 andthe com-j tions.
Bil
The lead lines in Figure 4 and the arrows indicate the movement of the paper sheet or web as it is drawn through the two sets of feed or nipping rolls. The complementary rolls 4 and 5 as best seen in Figure 1 coact directly with the Vcutter blade 18 for slitting or cutting the edge of the paper sheet or web as it passes down between the two y sets of feed rolls.
The rotary cutter-blade 18 is an open center, circular plate or disk, having a sharpe ened or beveledl cutting edge,A and the blade is attached by screws 19 (dotted lines Figure V5) to a cutter head 20. This circular cutter head 20 is fashioned with an integral or rigid, driven, gear wheel 21, and theseY members revolve upon a bearing bushing 22 which encases a spindle 23. The spindle or pin 23 is provided with a retaining head 24 which engages both the bushing 22 and the cutter head to hold these elements in operative position.
One end of the pin 23 is reduced as indicated at 25 and by means of this reduced portion the pin is supported in a boss 26 of a bracket 27,v and securing or clamping nuts Y28 on the threaded extremity of the reduced portion hold the cutter andcu'tter head in operative position'and with'stability. The bracket 27 is fashioned with a hub 28 which latter is secured in adjusted position on the bar 11 byk means of a set bolt 29 carried by the hub 28 and designed to impinge against the surface of the bar 11. It will be apparent thatkthe bracket carrying the cutter head and cutter may, through the hub 28 and set bolt 29, be adjusted both longitudi-v nally and circuniferentially of the bar 1l vto accurately position the rotary cutter for the performance of its functions.
The rotary cutter is operated from the shaft 2 by means of a gear wheel 30 in engagement with the gear wheel 21 of the cutter head, and these gears are held in mesh Y by the tension of the spring 16 and lever 13,
as will be readily understood.
Adjacent to the roller4 of the shaft 2 a disk 31 is fixed to revolve with the shaft, and between this disk and the roller 4 an annular space 32 is formed into which the cutting edge of the rotary cutter projects, and by its coeactionwith the roll 4 the. cutter severs or slits the edge of the paper sheet or web as the latter moves between the feed rolls. l
The rotary cutter in its relation to this cutting space or groove 32 may be adjusted' j usting the lever 13 through its hub 14 andI bolt l5.
rl`he axial center of the cutter-it will be observed is located below the axial centers of the feed rolls and their shafts, and the cutting of the web takes place at approximately a point in alinement with the axial centers of the two sets of feed rollers 0r rolls. f
` The cutting edge of the cutter which engages the paper web or sheet at'point 33 in Figure 4, thus co-acts with and severs or slits the web just' at the point where the web is most rigidly Vgripped or held between the nipping or feed rolls, and at this point the greatest stability of the web is secured. Therefore'the cutter is permitted to make a smooth and uniform cut of the web as it passes through the feed rolls.
- Various changes may be made in the exemplification of my invention as illustratedin the drawings, within the scopeof my appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
1. The combination with an operating shaft and feed rolls thereon, of a support and adjustable yokes thereon, a shaftY journaled in said yokes and complementary vfeed rolls on said shaft, a rotary cutter,`a bracket for said cutter having an adjustable hub on said support, and resilient means connected to said support for maintaining said feed rolls and cutter in operative position.
2. The combination withv a web feed mechanism of a. supporting bar, a cutter bracket having a hub adjustable on said bar, a pin in said-yoke, a rotary cutter head and cutter on said' pin, means for operating said cutter head and cutter, and resilient means acting on said supporting bar for maintaining the rotary cutter, in operative position.
v3. The combinationA with a web feed mechanism of asupporting bar, a cutter bracket having a hub adjustable on said bar, a lever connected with said Vsupporting bar and an anchored tensionY spring connected with said lever, a pin in said bracket, a rotary cutter head and cutter on said pin, andvv ANTHONYl ZIMNIEVVICZ.
