My invention comprehends the provision of rotary cutting wheel means of variousdimensions and adapted interchangeably to be em loyed in cooperation with the backing roliier for producing in the traveling web sheet different sets of die cut folder tops; and with this general object in view, Iprovide a main shaft 18 for carrying the rotary die cutting wheels of different sizes, means being provided for supporting the main shaft 18 for adjustment toward and away from the backing roller in accordance with the particular size of rotary die cutting wheel selected to produce a given set of die out tops in a web sheet, an adjustable transmission means also being provided for effecting the rotation of the main shaft 18 irrespective of its adjusted position.
The referred means for o era-tively and adjustably supporting the s aft 18 comrises bearing blocks 19 through which may he slipped the opposite ends of the shaft 18, said bearing blocks being slidably mounted in vertically extending apertures 20 provided in guide elements 21, said bearing blocks 19 slidably fitting for vertical adjustment upon keys or ridges 22 projecting into the apertures 20 from the guide elements 21. The open top ends of the apertures 20 are closed by caps 23 which are secured as by means of screw bolts 24 upon the top ends of the guide elements. said caps serving as stops for defining the upper terminal adjustments of the bearing blocks. Screw threaded through cross ieces 25, which define the lower ends of the apertures 20, are adjusting screws 26 carrying heads 27, and coiled springs 28 are placed between the heads 27 and the bearing blocks 19. By this arrangement,.'the bearing blocks are both resiliently and adjustably supported in the guide elements. For the support of the guide elements 21, the uprights 14 have proecting arms 29 attached thereto and these arms have vertically extending sleeve-like portions 30 and openings 31 in which said guide elements have sliding fit and rack teeth 32 are provided on one side of the guide elements for engaging with pinions 33 carried by sleeves 34 pinned on shafts 35 rotatably mounted in the sleeve-like portions 30. For turning the pinions 33. I provide hand wheels 36 having hubs 37 secured to the shafts 35 and interlocking with the sleeves 34. Set screws 38, which are tapped through the sleeve-like portions 30, are arranged to engage the guide elements 21 for securing them in the adjusted positions desired. i
The adjustable transmission means whereby to operate the'main shaft 18 many. given positlon of adjustment comprises a sleeve 39 rotatably mounted in a cross piece 40, which connects the uprights 14, and a collar 41 on said sleeve which rests upon an antl-friction device 42 operatively seated in a su table socket 48 in said cross piece 40.

A sleeve 47, which is mounted in a casin 48, formed with the collar 41, supports t e pinion 46 and is pinned on a shaft 49 carrying a hand wheel 50 whereby the shaft 44 may be adjusted relatively to the sleeve 39 with which it rotates. Pinned to the top end of the shaft 44 is a bevel gear 51 adapted to engage with a suitable bevel gear 52 detachably secured to the main shaft 18. The sleeve 39, at its lower end, carries a bevel gear 53 in mesh with a bevel gear 54 on drivin shaft 55 which is operated from any suitable source of power. The transmission means is therefore adjustable in order that gears as 52 of different sizes may be employed in connection with the main shaft 18, so as to compensate as may be required for the employment of different sizes of rotary die cutting wheels.
In the illustrated embodiment, the rotary die cutting wheel 56 comprises a wheel proper 57 formed with a circumferential flange 58 and provided with radially extending pin receiving slots 55). Surrounding the circumference of the wheel 57 and hav- 60 projecting into the pin receiv- 59 is a rotary cutting blade 61 which is formed at certain interval-spaced positions with laterally offset cutting portions 62, there being countersiuks 63 formed in the flange 58 for receiving said laterally offset cutting portions 62. For securing the blade in its circumferential seat upon the wheel and against the flange 58 thereon, I provide a clam ing ring 64 adapted to tit flatwise upon tie wheel 57 and to overlie the circular blade 61 and suitable bolt means 65 are taken through the clamping ring 64 and wheel 57, said bolt means being equipped with the usual nuts 66 whereby. as shown in Fig. 5, to secure the parts together.

After the web sheet through the cooperation of the rotary die cutting wheel and backing roller has had the file folder tops die cut thereon, any suitable folding and folder severing means, such as illustrated in my patent above referred to, may be employed for folding the web sheet lengthwise and then severing it along separating lines as 72 to produce vertical file folders 73, as illustrated in Fi 8., Now,'from what has been said, it will be understood, that rotary die cutting Wheels as 61. of dilferent sizes may be applied to the main ting diflerent sets .of file folding tops in the web sheet. For instance, the rotary die cutting wheel may be reduced in size so that upon each revolution it will die out four tile folder tops; or it may be still further reduced in circumferential dimension so that it will cuton each revolution but three file folder tops. Therefore, by providing means for adjustably supporting the main shaft 18 and by providing adjustable transmission means for operating said: shaft, interchangeable rotary die cutting wheels may be employed in connection with said shaft for cutting difierent sets of file tolder tops.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come-within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Mechanism of the character set forth including roller means for engaging and shaft 18 for cut-.
. thereof laterally backing a traveling web sheet; and rotatable wheel means resiliently and siidably su ported for adjustment with a circular (d e cutting blade cooperating with said roller means to die out said web sheet, said cutting blade having interval-spaced laterally offset tab cutting edges thereon, substantially. as
described.

Mechanism of the character set forth including roller means for engaging and backing a traveling web sheet; rotatable wheel ,imeans resiliently and slidably supported, said rotatable wheel 'means aving acircular die cutting'blade cooperating with said-rollermeans to die-cut said web sheet; said cutting blade being formed with lateral-- lyofiset tab cutting edges; and said cutting blade being of a circumference to produce a set of die cut tabs on each revolution thereof, substantially as described.

Mechanism of the character set forth including roller means for engaging and backing a traveling web sheet; rotatable wheel means resiliently supported and horiaontally'slidable, said rotatable wheel means having a circular die cutting blade arranged to cooperate with said roller means to die out said web sheet; laterally ollset tab cutting edges on said blade which has a circumlerential dimension sufficient to produce a set of die cut tabs on each revolution thereof; and said laterally'ofiset cutting edges being interval-spaced so as to produce a top onveach die cut tab or" the set, substantially as described.

Mechanism ot' the character set forth including roller means for engaging and backing a traveling web sheet; rotatable wheel means resiliently supported and susceptible of horizontal and slidable adjustment, said rotatable wheel means having a circular die cutting blade arranged to cooperate with said roller means to die cut saidweb sheet, said blade being of a circumferential dimension suihcient to produce a plurality of die cut offset cutting edges formed at intervals on said blade to produce a tab on each die cut top; said laterally od'set cutting edges being spaced so the tabs in difierent positions on the die cut tops, substantially as described.

Mechanism of the character set forth including roller means arranged to turn with a traveling web sheet engaged thereby, said roller serving asa die cutter backing for said sheet and having a. highly tempered sur face for such purpose; a rotatable shaft carrying'a wheel, said wheel being resiliently and slidably supported for adjustment; a circular die cutting blade on said wheel cooperating with said tempered surface to die out said sheet; and interval-spaced laterally ofi'set-tab cutting portions on said blade cotill Mill
