The present invention relates to the improvement in bobbin Winders. I
The bobbin winder known as the'Davis and Furber bobbin winding machine as heretofore Constructed. formed a bunch on the'bobbin at or near the butt consisting of about thirty yards of filling. With improvements that have been made in the filling feeler mechanismuof the loom it has been found unnecessary toprovide as large a bunch on the bobbin asfhas heretofore been thepractice. The object of the present invention isto modify the construction of a bobbin winding machine and more especially the bobbin winding machine of the Davis and Furber type to form amuch smaller bunch on the bobbin so as to save the waste incident to the use of the larger bunch. The present invention consists in the bobbin winding machine hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims.

'The shaft 45 carries the worm wheel 46 which meshes with the worm 47 mounted on the shaft 48 supported in a worm carrier 50. The worm shaft 48. is provided with a hand wheel 51 by which it may be turned by the operative. The worm shaft 48 also carries the bevelpinion 52 which meshes with a bevel gear 53 loosely mounted on the shaft 54. A ratchet wheel 55 is secured to the bevel gear '53 and a pawl 56 is mountedon the pawl arm 57 also pivotally mounted on the shaft 54.

The operation of the machine provided with this new small bunch building device is somewhat different fromthe operation without. the device. Consequently, it will be convenient to describe the complete operation including the new bunch contrivance. With. the parts in the positions" which they occupy in Fig. 1, the inachineis assumed to be in; the condition it is in after dofiing and after having'been started up with the filling running over the taller wire to the: bobbin and in the act of building the small bunch. At this time, the traverse lever 40 rests upon the plate 76 which in turn is supported by the notch lever 78. A bobbin winder having, in combination, bobbin spindles, a faller wire, a traverse cam, a pick cam, connections between the faller wire and the two cams to traverse the taller wire over the bobbin, a notch member provided with a notch, a part of said connections having a portion to enter said notch, said notch member acting to prevent the transmission of motion from the cams to the taller wire, and said notch member being so located as to be struck and moved by the traverse cam to cause the connections to be actuated by the cams.
2. Traverse mechanism for bobbin winding machines having, in combination, a traverse'cam, a slide upon which it is mounted, a secondary slide carried by the first slide and having a nub normally adapted to rest upon and to be moved by the traverse cam,

3. Traverse mechanism for bobbin winding machines comprising a main slide, a traverse cam carried by the main slide, a pick cam and connections between it and the main slide for reciprocating the'latter, a secondary slide carried by the main slide, a nub on the secondary slide provided with a projection, a spring normally tending to lift the secondary slide a notch lever having a notch adapted to receive the projection on the secondary slide, a spring tending to hold the notch lever in the position to cause the notch to engage the projection, said notch lever having a part adapted to be engaged by the traverse cam to move the notch lever to release the projection.
4. Traverse mechanism for bobbin winding machines comprising a main slide, a traverse cam carried thereby, a traverse lever adapted to be driven therefrom, a filling guide and connections between the filling guide and the traverse lever, a secondary slide carrying a plate interposed between thetraverse lever and the traverse cam, a pivoted notch lever for engaging the plate, a spring normally tending to turn the notch lever in the direction to cause the notch to engage the plate, and a spring connected with the secondary slide normally holding the latter against the traverse lever.
