` This invention relates to improvements in spinning1 machines,particularly those having builder mechanisms wherein .a ring rail or other builder rail is so connected with the lifting weight thatit tends to rise, and so connected with the chain attached to building mechanism of `any well known type that the chain `operates to lower the rail against the `normal action of the lifter weight. i y
Such spinning machines are adapted to wind yarn on the bobbins, `and it is desirable, for use in certain types of looms, that there should b-e abunch of yarnxwound near the base or head of the bobbin for the purpose of giving better control to the iillingfeeler mechanism used particularly in `certain types of automatic looms.
l am aware that various devices have been used for building such bunches on the bobbins while being filled, but li believe that my device is simpler in construction Aand operation, and is also more positive and iiexible. i y y lit is also desirable that the size and lo cation of the bunch should be capable of adjustment, and this also l accomplish by my device. i

`ln Fig. 1 of the drawings, I show a spinning machine which comprises the usual 4fined trame -AQhaving the ladder 1, which supports a series of spindles 2 suitably driven by whirls `3 in-the usual manner and having a builder or ring rail l adapted to be moved upward and` downward relative to the ladder 1, the ring rail 4 being pro vided with the usual rings 5 and travelers 6. At the end of arm 10 is a toot pedal K by `the operation` of which the ring rail can be depressed, and L represents a latch whereby it can be locked in the depressed position.
Connected to and Jrorming part of: bell crank l lever E is a quadrant 14 of well known form, which extends upwardly at substantially right `angles to the arm 10 and `is connected to a chain B which extends therefrom and passes over a sheave 16 and thence downward overa roll 17 carried by a rack 18 .forming part of the builder mechanism C. 1
rlhis builder mechanism is of a well known type and is Shown aspivoted at 24 to the trarne and as having aycounterweight arm 25 which carriesa builder 'counterwe'ight 26.
The chain E is shown as passing around roll 17 carried by a rack 18 and as being fastened at #its end 19 to'arelatively stationary part of the builder'mechanism.
Through the medium of a worm 20 and key 21, which can be turned by a Winder 22, the position of rack 18 can be changed manually, thereby tightening or loosening chain B.
The cam Sor heart D of well known construction is shown' as in operative relation with a cam follower 23 carried by the buildermech'anism in such position that, as the cam revolves, it acts upon the follower 23 thereby automatically moving the builder 'mechanism' in such manner that the chain B is tightened or loosened.

, In suitable positions in the cam D, I provide a numberof slots 30, 30, 30, corresponding in number with the number of heels and toes of the cam, and passing through each slot, adjustable therein by means of a suitable vnut 32, isa trip pin 81 for a purpose to be described.
Fhrepresents what I will call a quadrant locking lever, which is pivoted to the frame A at 41 so as to rock vertically. This has a short end 42 and along end 50. Depending from the short end 42 is a locking lever triggerT'attached by meansof a bolt 43 to short end 42 infsuch manner that it can be moved horizontally in a slot 48, and by a suitable bolt'44 and slot v49 so that it can be vertically adjusted whereby its bearing end 45 canbeadjusted with reference to the pins 31. This trigger T is so adjusted that as each-pin 31 moves around with the cam, it will be lifted, thus lifting short end 42 and lowering thevlong end 50' of the quadrant lockinglever F.
In the top of this long end 50 is a latch notch 5l which preferably extends upward at a slope toward the pivot, and rises at 'right angles on the side toward the long end soas to serve as a latch. The top part of this holding end may be cut away slightly if desired. In this notch I can also locate a'stop finger 54 adjustable therein by suitable rbolt 52 for a purpose to be described.
Fixed ytothe quadrant 14 is a quadrant bracket G by means of suitable attaching boi'ts 60, and extending upward therefrom is a latch holding arm 61 which is preferably enlarged or extended at the top so as to permit of a horizontal slot 62` which, by means of a' suitable bearing bolt 64, permits the holding roller 63 to be adjustably carried thereby and to be adjusted in horizontal position.
This 'holding roller isV positioned so that it will'rest yon top of the'long end 50 of lever F and so that, as the quadrant moves, it will mechanism I roll over and drop intothe-latch notch 5l or rather will allow the long end 50 to rise so that the latch notch 51 will engage the roller G3 and hold the holding arm and quadrant in position until released.
Preferably I also show a latch closing i to hold the long end of the quadrant locking lever in contact with the holding rollerat all times.
This comprises a bar pivoted at to bracket G, including a weight arm 71 on the end of which is an adjustable coimterweight 72 and a. follower arm 73 which carries at its end a follower roll 74 which bears against the lower side of long end 50 of lever F, thus 'tending to .keep it raised at all times.
Instead of a weight operated closing mechanism, such as Il, I can use a spring, which may be a tension spring S, connected to 50 and any part of frame A, as shown in Fig. 5.
The operation of my device is as follows: The frame is started with the ring rail halfway up and the foot pedal K ispressed down quickly with the foot to force down the ring rail 4 and moves roller 63 until it is caught and held by notch 5l of quadrant locking lever F.
By means of the Winder 22 operating on the key 21, most of the slack of chain B is manually wound up, leavingr a certain amount of slack, indicated by the dotted line marked X in Fig. 1` and the machine is. allowedto operate. The toes B4 move from the position indicated at Y, Y in Fig. 4, the lower toe and the heels 35 moving correspondingly until the bottom toe 2M- engaging the follower 33 takes up and then release slightly the slack on chain li.
Atthe same time the trip pins 31 are nioving around, one of them gradually lifting the trigger T until the short end 42 is lifted and the long end 50 depressed to a point where the latch roller (lis released from latch notch 51 of lever F. entirely releasing the quadrant and the bell crank lever l and allowing the spinning machine to continue to operate in the usual manner.
The trip pins 31 and trigger T are so positioned by their adjustments that. except when starting the frame as describml. the, long arm 50 of lever F will be always dcpressed when latch roller 63 reaches notch 51, my mechanism being therefore always out of action except when it is desired that it 'should be operative to hold the ring rail stationary.
The size of the bunch can be regulated by adjusting the position of the trip pins 51 in their slots 30 in cam D, and the position of the bunch can be altered by adjusting the position of latch roller 63 in its slot 62.
The adjustable stop' fingerv 54 can be used in connection with the hand lever 53 in doffing. Just before doliing, foot pedal K is on the "rio integre depressed to bring the ring rail well down head of the bobb-ins, so that there will be an excess of yarn which will automatically wind on the spindle when `the bobbin is removed, thus catching the yarn thereon ready for the next empty bob-bin.
ln my device, the finger 54is so located that it will therefore arm 61, bell crank lever lli, and the ring rail at a point above the head of the bobbin. ln order to permit the lowering described, hand lever 53 attached to quadrant lever F is pushed down by hand, while foot pedal K is pushed down by the foot or held by latch L until such excess of yarn is wound on the bobbin head.
Hand lever 53 is then released, and roll 63 ridesback over the sloping side of finger 54 and thereafter is prevented by finger 54 from moving beyond a certain point, thus limiting the downward movement of the ring rail 4 except when hand lever 53 is pushed down.
My device can be applied in any spinning or twisting frame wherein there is a builder mechanism including a builder cam connected to a bell crank lever or other similar device for raising and lowering the ring rail by means of a flexible connectiomsuch as a chain, which permits the bell crank lever and ring rail to be moved independently of the builder mechanism.
lts essential features are the locking lever pivoted to the frame having a notch atone end in position to engage a holding arm attached to the bell crank lever and at the other end a trigger or other similar device in operative relation with a trip pin or trip pins carried by the builder cam.
It is obvious that my device may be modilied in various ways whereby the holder arms can be held by the locking lever and released by the action of a trip pin on the cam engaging such a trigger. lt is also obvious that various cooperating parts may be made adjustable in the manner described hereinbefore or by other well known equivalent means.
As shown in big. 8, instead of having the short arm 42 of lever F 0n one side of the pivot and the long arm 50 on the other side, l can pivot F from one end at 7 8 to frame A and attach the trigger T at a point 77 be- -tween the pivot and notch 51.
This notch 51 is shown as being underneath instead of on top, and the latch holding arm 61 and holding roller 63 are shown as under instead of over latch F. With this construction, the weight of lever F causes it to tend to drop and there is no need of the closing mechanism H or spring S, 'for when roller 63 is moved to the right to the dotted position, latch F drops by gravity.
As shown in Fig. 9, I may even dispense entirely with the trigger mechanism and trip ordinarily stop roll 63 and pins, and may use a gravity latch F pivote/l. at one end at 78 to trame il and having the notch 81 at the top slightly cut away so'that when the latch holding arm iscarried to the right over l?, carrying with it pin 84, which takes the place of roller 63, when latch F is lifted manually, the action. of the weight 15 acting through the quadrant and pin 84 will hold up latch F and hold back the quadrant until the flexible member or chain B tightens enough to carry 64 over to the right towards the dotted position, when the latch will drop and remainout of action thereafter.
With this device the quadrant can be locked in position until the bunch is built and then, as just described, it will be released and thereafter be out of action until a new bunch isto be built.

The combination with a spinning machine having a fixed frame and ring rail raising devices including a quadrant movable therewith, a lowering chain attached at one end to the quadrant and at the other end to builder mechanism, said builder mechani'sm including means to manually tighten the chain and a builder cam adapted to tighten and loosen the chain independently of the manual means, of a quadrant locking lever pivoted to the fixed frame having a.
notch near one end and a locking lever trigger at the other end, a stop finger carried by the locking lever and projecting into the notch, a trip pin carried by the builder cam in operative relation with said trigger, a holding arm attached to the quadrant, a holding roller carried by said arm in position to ride on the quadrant locking lever and to engage the notch therein, and means to hold the quadrant locking lever in contact with said holding roller.

The combination with a spinning machine having a fixed frame and ring rail raising devices including a lifting weight, a foot pedal and a. quadrant. movable therewith, a lowering cha-in attached at one end to the quadrant and at the other end to builder mechanism, said builder mechanism including means to manually tighten the chain and a builder cam adapted to tighten and loosen the chain independently of the :manual means, of a quadrant locking lever pivoted to the fixed frame having a notch near one end and a locking lever trigger at the other end, an adjustable trip pin carried by the builder cam in operative relation with said trigger, a holding arm attached to the quadrant, a holding roller carried by said arm in position to ride on the quadrant locking lever and to engage the notch therein, and means including an adjustable weight connected to the quadrant locking lever in suchmanner as to hold. it in contact with said holding roller.
