CLAMP.
Application sied November 1e, 1925. serial No. 69,457.y
The invention aims to provide a new and improved forni of clamp so designed as to coinpanying drawing. V
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the clamp applied to anewel post.
Figures 2 and 3 are horizontal sectional views as vindicated by lines 2 2 and 8 3 of Fig. 1. I
Figure 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illustrating` the application of the invention to a post having a different cross sectional shape.
In the drawing above briefly described Which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, the numerals 5 designate a plurality of parallel, transversely angular metal bars, and 6 designates a similar bar, the latter being separately identified in view of the fact that the construction associated with it is different from that of the bars 5. Only one of the bars 6 is necessary but any desired number of the other bars may be used and they may be of any preferred length and Width. These bars are adapted for engage ment with a newel post or other structure to be constricted, and it will be seen from Figs. 2, 3 and 4 that they engage portions of the structure, spaced apart around the periphery of the latter. When this structure possesses corners having the saine angularityy as the transverse formation of the bars 5 and 6, the latter may be applied to such corners as shown in Figs. 1, 2.and 3, and it Will be understood that the transverse angularity of said hars may be changed according to the Work upon which the clamp is to be used.
apart longitudinally of the bars 5, these barsk are provided on their outer sides With transi described and claiined'and shown in the ac These bars may if desired be engaged with verse projections 7, the outer sides of these projections being formed with smoothibottomed grooves 8 which are openended and j entend transversely of the hars. j
At points spaced' apart along the bar 6, corresponding to the points' at Which the projections 7 are disposed'on bars 5, are lugs 9. Each of these lugs is formed with ai bore 10 transverse to the bar and is also pro` vided with a notch 11 at one side of said bore. Spanning this notch andy passing through portions of thelug 9 at opposite sides thereof, is a removable pin 12 preferably having a threaded engagement 13 with said'. lug, so as to prevent accidental dishlacement."
Binding elements in the forni of chains 14 are shown, links of said chains being receivable in the notches 11 and being of a size to receive the pin 12. Screw-threaded adjusting devices are connected with the chains 14 and pass through the bores 10. Each of these devices, in the construction shown,
-coinprises a screvv-threaded shank 15 suitably connected at 16 with the chain 14, said shankpassing slidably through the bore 10 and being provided on its outer end with a hand Wheel 17' Whose hub has threaded en-` gagement With the shank. Preferably, a Washer 18 is interposed between this hub and the lug 9.
In using the invention, the bars 5 and 6 are applied to the neWel post or other struc-y ture to be constricted, the chains 14 are passed around .this structure and the bars 5, While they hand Wheels 17 are loosened,
SIF
and said ychains are connected with the lugs k9, by means of pins 12. These chains, it AWill be observed, are slidably engaged with the smooth Vbottoms yof the grooves 8, sothat upon tightening of the hand wheels 17, the
ychains Will slide in said grooves as they are tightened. The device serves to effectively hold the structure in assembled position and its primary use is for perforinin such ak holding function, vWhile glue Wit Which sections ofthe structure are connected, is allowed t0 dry. y
Excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed and they are therefore preferably followed. However, Within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made. Moreover, changes in size and strength, in the number of the bars 5, in the number of constricting devices for these hars, ete., may be made Within the scope ot the invention as claimed.
l claim l. A clamp of the class described comprising a plurality of parallel transversely angular bars for engagement with a structure to be constricted, said bars having` transverse enlargements on their outer sides spaced apart longitudinally ofsaidbars, the outer sides of said enlargements having smooth-bottomed grooves extending transversely of the bars, an radditional transverselyfsangularbar having lon itudinally spaced lugs on its exterior, lilenible binding elements detachably secured te Said lugs respectively, and screiv-threaded tightening devices for said elementsmounted on said lugs. and connected to the tree ends oiLI said elements,` said elements being slidably engageable jwiththesmooth bottoms ot the aforesaid grooves.V
`21A clamp ofthe class describedcoinprising a plurality loi" parallel transversely angular bars for engagement with a structure to be constricted, bars having transverse enlargements en their outer sides spaced apart longitudinally of said bars, the outer sides of said enlargementshaving smooth-bottomed grooves extending transversely of the bars, an additional transversely angular bar having longitudinally spaced lugs on its exterior, said lugs having a longitudinal bore extending transversely to the bar and having in one side a notch at right angles to said bore, removable pins carried by said lugs and spanning said notches, binding chains detaehably and adjustably connected at one end to said pins and passing around through the grooves in said enlargements, screw threaded tight eningshanks slidably engaged iviththe-bores in said lugs and directly connected at their inner ends to the opposite ends of said chains, and hand .Wheels having threaded hubs engaged. With the outer 4ends of shanls and bearing against the outer ends -ofrsaid lugs, whereby the turning of'said Wheels in one direction Will draw said Shanks through said bores and tighten said chains.
ln testimony whereof l vhave hereunto aiiied my signature.
JOHN B. BENSON.
