This invention relates to torpedo placers for railways and its general object is to provide a torpedo placer which can be used to place a torpedo on a rail from the rear end y ofy a moving train in an eficient, easyV and expeditious manner and with very little effort on the part of the operator. n
A further object of the invention is to provide a torpedo placer that is capable of carrying at least two torpedoes so that a number of torpedoes can be placed on a rail at an appropriate distance apart and in quick succession.
Another object of the invention is to provide a torpedo placer that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, yet* will perform'its intended function for a prolonged period of time.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out yin the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout thel several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the manner in which my torpedo placer in used to secure a torpedo to a rail.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the application of a torpedo in my placer.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of one of the ends of Vmy placer.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference numeral l indicates the handle of my torpedo placer which has secured to each end and upon opposite sides thereof arms y which cooperate with each other to provide a fork in a manner as best shown in Figure l of the drawings. Each ofthe arms include attaching plates 2 and 3 which are secured to the handle through the instrumentality of rivets or other fastening means 4. The arms from the attaching plates 2 and 3 are fiared outwardly to provide diverging intermediate portions 5, and from the diverging intermediate portions the arms extend in parallel portions 6 which have their free ends curved outwardly in opposed directions in a manner as best shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.

The parallel portions are provided with longitudinally disposed slots 7 which terminate adjacent each end of these parallel portions and the lower end wall of the slots are ce recessed to provide shoulders 8 for the purpose of receiving the ends ofthe usual spring A for the holder of the torpedo `B as best shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
l From the above description and disclosure nn of the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided a torpedo placer which is adapted to have fixed in each end thereof through the medium of the shoulders 8 a torpedo and by employing the arms on each end of the handle v1, the torpedo can be arranged in each end of the handle which is of suficient length to allow a person toL apply a torpedo to a rail from the rear end of a moving train, as it will he apparent that when the one torpedo is placed on the rail, the handle can be reversed to apply the other torpedo, and due to the movement of the train, theV torpedoes will be sufficiently spaced from each other so as to give an appropriate signal. By arranging the spring A of the holder of the torpedo B in the manner as shown in Figure 2, it will be obvious that the torpedo can be readily applied to the rail C by merely allowing the inter-V mediate portion of the spring A to engage the ra-.il and with slight downward pressure of the handle, the ends of the spring A will be released from the shoulders 8 with the result the spring will he securely clamped to the rail so as to be arranged in the path of a following train.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I lmay make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.

l. A torpedooplacer ofthe character described comprising a handle, cooperating arms secured tothe .ends of said handle to provide a fork at cach end thereof, said arms being slotted, shoulders formed in said slots and being adapted to receive'a torpedo. f

A torpedo placer of the character described comprising a handle, arms arranged in pairs and secured adjacent the ends of 110 said handle in a, manner to provide afork at cach end, parallel portions included in said arms and being provided with longitudinally disposed slots, a shoulderI arranged at the outer ends of each slot and said parallel portions terminating in outwardly flared free ends.
