My invention relates to a retaining valve` bracket of the type in which the valve isvattached to an auxiliary member movable independently of the bracket proper and consistsvin various novel features of construe tion and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate some forms of bracketV made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a 1U top plan view of one form of bracket, to-` gether with a portion of a railway car to which it is attached, and a retaining valve which it carries; Figure2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing a slight modification; Figure 4 is a top plan view showing a further modification; Figure 5 is a side view of the form shown in Figure 4; and Figure 6 isa section taken on the 3U line 6 6 of Figure 4.
Referring iirst to Figures 1 and 2, 7 indicates the end of a. car to which the bracket is attached. The body or iixed part of the bracket consists of a plate of metal bent to form ends 8, a pair of forwardly projecting walls 9 and a central part 10. Rivets 11 .fjecure ends 8 tothe car. Formed in the walls 9 adjacent to the central part 10 are slots 12 through which passes a strap 13l the ends 5", of which project beyond the Walls 9 and are provided with bolt holes 14. Bolts 15, ypro` vided with heads 16, pass through the holes 14 and through holes in the lugs of the retaining valve 17 which isV held in position by nuts 18 on the bolts.
The holes 14 in the strap are somewhat larger than the bolts to give the necessary adjustment for variations between the holes in the valve lugs and are in such relation to the walls 9 that these walls prevent the rotation of the bolt heads. Vertical'adjustment is provided by the movement of the strap in the slots 12.
In Figure 3 I have shown a slight modiiication. This construction is the same as that above described except thatl the straight` strap 13 is replaced by a strap 19 having a pair of bends 20 to prevent the removal of the strap from the slots. stood that one or both of the bends must be formed after the strap is in position in the slots. In addition to preventing the removal of the strap from the slots the bends may be so positioned with relation to the bolt holes It will be under-rV that they willprevent the rotation of the bolt Aheads vand hence the walls 9 need not be relied upon for their purpose and may, if
desired, bel situatedat wsomedistance from the bolts.'A y r l Figures 4, 5 and 6 show a further modication. formed in the walls 9 but the central part 10 is provided with extensions 21'to which a second plate 22V is secured by rivets 23. The central part 24 of this plate 22 is bent out ofthe plane of the ends so'that a space is formed between the parts 10 and 24 to receive thestrap 10 which may in this construction have the bends 2O formed therein before the parts are assembled.
Having fully described my invention, what I- claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket adapted to be vsecured to a car and having a part spaced therefrom, of an auxiliary member movable relatively to said bracket and projecting beyond said spaced part, and bolts extending through the projecting parts of said auXil* iary member and engaging a retaining valve.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket adapted to be secured to al car and having a part spaced therefrom, of an .auxiliary member movable relatively to said bracket and projecting beyond said spaced part, means for preventingvthe removal of said auxiliary member from the bracket, and bolts extending through the projecting parts of said auxiliary member and engaging a retaining valve.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket adapted to be secured to a car and having a part spaced therefrom, of an auxiliary member movable relatively to said bracket and projecting beyond said spaced part, said auxiliary member being provided with bends preventing its removal from the bracket, and bolts extending through the projecting parts of said auxiliary member and engaging a retaining valve.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket adapted to be secured to acar and having a part spaced therefrom, of a strap movable relatively to the bracket and projecting' beyond the spaced part, said strap having bolt holes in In'this construction no slots are the projecting part, and bends adjacent to the bolt holes to -preventrotation of bolt heads.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination With a bracket, of a plate secured to said bracket and haying'its central part spaced therefrom, an auxiliary member in the space between said bracket and kplate and projecting beyondthe latter, and bolts carried by said auxiliary member and adapted to engage a retaining valve.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bracket, of afplate secured to said bracket and having its central part spaced therefrom, a strap vin the space between said bracket and plate and projecting beyond the latter, bolt holes in the projecting ends of said Strap, and bolts in said holes adapted to engage Ya' lretaining valve, SaidV strap being)- provided with bends ad- Ajacent to the bolt holesr to engage the bolt I hereunto aliix my 30
