C. M. RICE TRANSPARENT SIGN AND THE METHOD OF MAKING SAME Filed April 5. 1926 INVENTOR FIG. 7 CYRILMRICE BY J M;
ATTORN 5 Patented Mar. 20, 1928.
UNITED STATES CYRIL M. RICE, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
- TRANSPARENT SIGN AND THE METHOD OF MAKING- SAME.
Application filed April 5, 1926. Serial ITO. 99,924.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in signs and the method of making same, and the object of the inven" tion is to provide a sign of a transparent nature which will be inexpensive to manufacture and eliicient in operation.
Another object is to provide a flexible sign of the class stated which will lend itself efficiently to all classes of advertising frames and manners of mounting same.
A further object is to provide a sign of the class stated which will be of robust construction and in which the advertising matter will be protected from the efiects of the weather.
In my invention I provide a sign made from two pieces of flexible transparent material. The advertising matter is painted, printed or otherwise placed on the face of one sheet and covered by the other, the contacting surfaces being so treated that both sheets will unite when pressed together to form a single sheet of transparent material with the advertising matter positioned between the outside surfaces of the said single sheet.
In the drawings which illustrate my invention in one of the many forms it may be constructed Figure 1 is a side elevation of a typical sign which may be made according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of the device shown in Figure 1 and taken on the line 2-2 thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the back ground -element of the sign.
Figure 4 is a perspectiveview of the cover for the background.
Figures 5 and 6 show the positions of the cover and the background during the proc ess of manufacture of the sign. a
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the finished product. 7
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 11 designates a sheet of transparent material preferably celluloid and upon the upper face 14 of said sheet hereinafter called the background, is painted, printed or otherwise marked the advertisingmatter, which for illustrative purposes only I have shown as Doe and Co. A cover 12 of similar material is shown in Figure 4: and this cover is preferably made of substantially the same shape as the background. The face 13 of the cover and the face leof the background are then treated with a chemical such as benzol or acetone, which will cause the adjacent surfaces of the sheets to adhere to one another and knit together to form a single sheet of flexible material of uniform thickness. The cover and the background are then placed in the position shown in Figures 5 and 6, that is with the treated surfaces adjacent one another and with the painted or printed surface of the background uppermost, so that when the cover and the background are brought together as shown in Figure 7, and subjected to a predetermined pressure they will unite and form a single sheet of transparent material with the advertising matter positioned within the material and between the surfaces 16 and 17. The material may then be bent by any process to suit the requirements of the purchaser and as an illustration of same, I have shown in Figure 1, and in Figure 2, the material bent in the form of a cylinder 18 withornamental ends or caps 19 placed at each end. Illuminating means such as an ordinary electric lamp may be placed within'the cylinder as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1. This lamp may be connected in any suitable manner to a'source of electrical supply by means of the plug 20.
Modifications may be made in the general construction of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A sign constructed in the manner herein described isvery efficient in service and provides a flexible sign of a transparentnature which is inexpensively manufactured and in which the advertising matter is protected from the effects of the weather by being positioned within the body of the sign. The cover and the background may be made of any thickness and of any shape as desired. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An advertising sign comprising an inner cylindrical sheet of transparent celluloid having advertising matter applied directly on the outer surface of said sheet, an outer tween the inner and outer surfaces of said cylindrical sheet of transparent celluloid en- Wall caps closing the ends of said cylinclosing said inner cylindrical sheet, said drical sheets and illuminating means con- 10 sheets having their contacting surfaces tained Within the cylinder.
chemically treated and united by adhesion In Witness whereof I have hereunto set to form in efi'ect a unitary cylinder Wall 'my'hand.
with the advertising matter positioned be- CYRIL M. RICE.
