J. WOLF ILLUMINATING DEVICE Filed March 30 Patente ay 27, 1924.
JULIUS WOIiF, OF CHICAGO, ILLIITOIS.
ILLUMINATING DEVICE.
Application filed March 30,1922. Serial No. 548,032.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS WOLF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Devices; .and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in illuminating devices and more particularly to such as are adapted for use in connection with a mirror, one object of the invention being to provide a deviceof the character specified which will facilitate the use of the mirror,-as a shaving mirror for example,-without subjecting the user to glare of, or the reflection from, the light employed.
With this and other objects-in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in section of anilluminatin'g device embodying my improvements; Figure 2 is a front view, and Figure 3 is an enfllaiiged detail view. n the embodiment of m invention shown in the drawings, the b0 y portion 1 'of the device" may be made of .sheet metal and formed with a flaring portion 2, the exterior of which may be nickel plated for ornamental purposes, and the interior face of the flaring portion 2 (and the back portion also if desired) is coated with such material as will afford a flat whitefinish. A plurality of posts'or supports 3 are provided at their rear ends with arms 4 secured to the back of the body 1 and said supports project forwardly and at their free ends, are bent or formed to provide sockets or recesses 5 to.
- receive edge portions of a frame 6 in which 1 a mirror 7 is mounted. The frame 6 may consist of a sheet metal plate or covering that envelops the back and edge of the mirror as well as a narrow peripheral portion of the mirror front as indicated at 8. The outer surface of that part of the frame or plate 6 which covers the back of the mirror may be coated with such material as will afford a flat white surface and the peripheral portion of said frame or p-latein front of the mirror may be nickel-plated for ornamental purposes.
The supports 3 for the mirror will preferably be made of, resilient metal, so that they may be readily sprung outwardly to release the mirror when it is desired to remove the latter to clean the fiat white light diffusing surfaces.
The body portion 1 of-the device is provided therein with an arm 9 which serves as a support for an incandescent lam 10 which is interposedbetween the mirror and v the back of said body portion. .The device may be also provided with a perforated extension or lug 11'- to facilitate the mounting of said device on a hook or other support.
An insulating bushing 12 may be passed through the flaring portion of thedevice for the accommodation of leading-in-conductors for the lamp and said flaring portion may also be provided with a h0le 14 for the passage of the pull chain 15 of the lamp.
When the device is in use, the light from the lamp, will be difiused by the flat white surfaces and directed toward the face of the user and will afford ample illumination without producing any glare in the eyes of the. user, the light thus directed assing through the space between the peripheral portion of the mirror and the peripheral portion of the flaring part 2 of the device.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination of a body portion having a flaring part provided with an inner flat white diffusing surface, a mirror appreciably less in diameter than that of the free edge portion of the flaring part of the body portion whereby an annular space is formed between said mirror and the flaring part of the body portion, said mirror provided with a rear flat white difiusing surface, posts I Memes connecting said mirror {with the back part In testimony whereof, I have signed Hue of the body portion and leaving unobstrucmspecification in the presence of two subscrio ed the annular space between the mirror ing Witnesses.
and the flaring part of the body portion, JULIUS WOLF. and a lamp disposed behind the mirror and VJitnesses: F in front of the back part of the bodypor- GEO. A. STEPHEN,
