UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SONYA BEATRICE MERKEL AND EMMANUEL DOBROWSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATER SILENCER.
Application filed April 16, 1927. Serial No. 184,406.
This invention relates to an improved water silencer.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be attached to any faucet and which will silence and filter the flow of water, overcoming the objectionable noise and splashing.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which not only functions to silence the flow of water but filters the same as well, and which is so constructed that the parts may be readily assembled or taken apart to replace the silencing device per se when the latter is soiled or injured.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which comprises two separable members readily assembledand which can be cheaply manufactured and yet will most efficiently perform the functions for which they are intended.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view mainly in elevation but partly in vertical section illustrating my improved device in operating position on the faucet;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view in section on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking downwardly.
' Our improved silencer 1 comprises a spirally wound, rolled or coiled member, and we may employ any material but preferably employ soft fabric which can becheaply produced. The silencer may be made of proper diameter and in any suitable length and secured at the edge and free end thereof in any desired manner.
A simple form of securing means is to provide whipped stitches 2 although any other fastening means may be employed.
The outer portion or thickness of the silencer 1 is extended beyond the main portion thereof at one end of the silencer, and this outlet thickness of material is secured within a collar 3 by means of an internal ring 4. In other words, the ring 4 functions to clamp the outer thickness of material of the silencer 1 within the collar 3, and this ring 4 may be a split spring ring as shown,
or it may be made in any way which will L effectually clamp the silencer to the collar but allow the silencer to be removed whenever itis desired to replace the same.
5 represents a coupling ring which has a perforated rubber disk 6 therein adapted to receive the faucet 7 and securely engage the same and hold the silencer in place. This coupling ring 5 has screw-threaded engagement with the collar 3, as shown at 8.
This two-part arrangement of securing means at the upper end of the silencer and the coupling ring to engage the faucet not only facilitates the construction and operation of the device but also facilitates the sale of the device in that these parts may be sold or purchased separately and hence come Within the ordinary business of 5 and 10 cent stores.
In Figure 1 we show our improved silcn cer on the faucet 7 of a bathtub 9, and it will be noted that the silencer is of such a length as to cause the water to flow therefrom directly onto the bottom wall of the tub so that the flow of water will be practically noiseless.
It is obvious of course that we do not limit ourselves to the length of the silencer and it is also apparent that the silencer may be used anywhere where water or other fluid is discharged, and we desire to cover broadly the silencer for any use to which itcan be put.
Various changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described. without departing from our inven tion and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth but consider our selves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
\Ve claim:
1. A water silencer, comprising a spirally wound or coiled fabric member, a ring secured to one end of the member and adapted for coupling engagement with the faucet.
2. A water silencer. including a flexible fabric member, a collar, a clamping ring Within the silencer securing the same in the collar, and a faucet coupling member having screw-threaded engagement with the collar.
3. A silencer of the character described,
comprising a spirally Wound or rolled fabric member, the outer portion of the same extended beyond the lntermediate portion thereof, a collar receiving sald outer portion,
