UNETED STATES ana 1 LL'L ELIE A. FARRON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SCALIP APPLIANCE.
Application filed March 27, 1922. Serial No. 546,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIE A. FARRON, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scalp Appliances, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to scalp appliances, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described for stimulating the growth of the hair by providing a partial vacuum adjacent the scalp.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described for releasing dandruff from the scalp and for removing the loose dandrufi' to a suitable compartment.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described for removing short, broken, loose hairs from the scalp, which are not easily removed by brush or comb.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described, which may be detached from the vacuum feed pipe and submerged in an antiseptic solution when not in use, thus insuring an absolutely sanitary conditionat all times.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of an embodiment of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a laterally bent metal handle member 1 having a central bore 2 therethrough. The handle portion 1 is constructed of hard rubber, if-desired. Integral outwardly extending collars 3 and 4: are provided adjacent the ends of the handle member 1. The outer surface of each of the collars 3 and 4: is curved so as to obviate sharp corners which might prove unsanitary. The upper end 5 of the handle portion 1 is provided with threads 6 on the exterior wall thereof extending from the collar 3 to the outermost end of the portion 5, the annular opening 7 of the portion 5 being beveled to obviate sharp edges.
A metal disk 8 having a centrally located opening 9 therein is slipped over the portion 5 of the handle 1 and moved into engagement with the collar 3, the side wall of the opening 9 closely engaging the outer wall of the member 1. A soft rubber body portion 10 having a central bore 11' therethrough is slipped over the portion 5 of the handle 1. The body portion 10 is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending integral conical projections 12 on the outer face 13 thereof. A general arrangement of the conical projection 12 is more clearly shown in Fig. 1. The bore 11 of the body portion 10 is substantially greater in diameter than the diameter of the portion 5 and a threaded metal bushing 14 is screwed upon the threads 6 of the portion 5, the outer wall of the bushing 14' closely contacting the walls of the bore 11. The bushing 14: is provided with an outwardly extending flange 15 at its outer end, which flange is moved into close engagement with the body portion 10. Thus, a scalp massaging appliance is pro vided, the conical projections 12 serving as fingers to contact the scalp and the resilient property of the body portion 10 providing the necessary yielding cushion between the projections 12 and the pressure applied manually to the handle 1.
The opposite end portion 16 of the handle 1 has rolled threads 17 on its outer wall between the collar 4 and the mouth 18 thereof.
The rolled threaded portion of the end 16 vis adapted to receive a rubber hose 19, the
other end of which is connected to a vacuum appliance, not shown. The vacuum appliance is similar to the ordinary vacuum pump and bag used in various forms of carpet cleaners and the like.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. 1 have provided in my device a novel construction, by means of'which the parts which are brought into contact with the scalp and which might be exposed to infectious scalp maladies or the like maybe removed and placed in an antiseptic solution until needed again. Thus my device is always in a sanitary condition for use. In using my scalp appliance, T fasten the hose 19 from the vacuum appliance to the rolled threaded withthe scalp, to become loosened and when loosened, it will be drawn between the projections 12 and up through the bore 2 in the handle 1 into a bag provided in the vacuum appliance, not shown. It should be noted that the use of this device creates a partialvacuum adjacent the scalp which tends to have a stimulating effect upon the growth of the hair.
I claim: 1. A device of the character described comprising a resilient body member having integral outwardly extending fingers on one surface thereof, a metal plate closely engaging the opposite surface of said body member, a laterally bent tubular handle for supporting said body member and said plate, the interior bore of said handle arranged to communicate with said first named surface of said body member, and a bushing adapted to engage said handle and said resilient body member to lock said body and said plate against movement on said handle, said handle adapted to be connected at its opposite end to a vacuum appliance by means of a rolled thread thereon adapted to engage the hose connection of said vacuum appliance.
2. An attachment of the character described for a vacuum appliance consisting in a tubular handle arranged to be connected with the inlet of said vacuum appliance, said handle having an annular flange adjacent the outer end thereof, a metal plate concentric to said handle and contacting with said flange, a resilient body member mounted concentric to said handle and in contact with said plate, said body member being provided with a plurality of integral outwardly extending fingers on the outer surface thereof, and a threaded bushing disposed in the annular space between said body member and the outer Wall of said tubular handle for securing said body member against movement on said handle.
