Description

Patented Een. 5, i922.
STATES RALPH E. CLEVELAND, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BRUSH.
Application filed January 31,1922. Serial No. 533,042.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, RALPH E. CLEVELAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Brush, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in brushes and has 'particularl reference to a brush to be used in connection with a wash bowl having an outlet in its bottom. The principal object of the invention is to provide means by which a person having only one hand can conveniently wash the same without the assistance of another person. Ordinarily a person uses one hand to wash the other, but it is a fact that a person who has lost one hand nds it hard to wash his remaining hand without assistance. My device provides a convenient means permitting a person to wash one hand by itself.
1With this object in view l have illustrated the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l represents a vertical cross section through a wash bowl having my brush secured thereto, and Figure 2 a perspective detail view of my brush. 1While l have illustrated only one form of my device, it will be understoodt-hat I various changes ormodiications may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The bowl (l), having an outlet (2) in its bottom leading to the sewer and having a suitable faucet secured over the same for admitting` water into it, is of ordinary construction and does not offer any new features. My brush (et), which is to be used in connection with this bowl and which comprises a back (6) having the bristles extending therefrom, is slantingly supported; within the bowl as shown in Figure l by means of a handle (8) secured to the back of the brush by the screws (9) engaging the flange (il). rThe eXtreme end (12) of the handle is adapted to be inserted into they outlet pipe andis arrested in its downward mot-ion by a collar (14) engaging the surface surrounding the outlet.
lVhile l do not wish to be confined to the slanting position of the brush, I deem the same preferable as lending itself more readily and naturally to the use to be made of it. The manipulation of the brush is easily understood. A person wishing to wash a single hand needs only to insert the brush into the outlet pipe (2) in its proper position, then open the faucetto lill the wash bowl with water and he may then clean his hand by means of the brush. After he has finished the operation he may remove` the brush, whereupon the water will run down through the outlet. ln this manner the brush serves at the same time the purpose of a plug.
l claim:
l. In combination with a wash bowl haring an outlet therein, a brush having means thereon engaging the outlet for supporting the brush transversely over the outlet, for the purposes set forth.
2. ln combination with a wash bowl having an outlet therein, a brush having a handle provided on its back adapted to engage the outlet so as to support the brush transversely over the outlet.
3. ln combination with a wash bowl having an outlet therein, a brush having a handle rising from its back in a slanting direction adapted to engage the outlet for slantingly supporting the brush over the outlet.
RALPH E. CLEVELAND.
