Description

MarchZO, l928 c. v. BROWN HOLDING DEVICE FOR SMOKERS ARTICLES Filed July 17. 1926 Patented Mar. 20, 1928.
UNITED STATES CAL V. BROWN, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
. HOLDING DEVICE FOR smoxnns' ARTICLES. I
Applicationfiled July 17, 1926. Serial No. 123,048.
This invention relates to a holding device for smokers articles, and while'features of the invention may be applied in various situ-' at-ions, the invention is particularly applicable where the device is to be used 111 a position where the holder must be normally in a withdrawn or folded position so that it is out of the way, for example, on the dash of an automobile or on the rear face of a wall forming the back of a seat, or in any other situation where it is desirable to leave the face of the wall unobstructed' when the holder is not being used to expose the articles carried by it.
The general object of the inventiou is to provide a device of this-nature of simple construction, andso constructed as to enable it to be operated readily to expose the articles when wanted, butwhich normally holds the articles concealed with the face of the dash or wall unobstructed.
Further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
' The invention consists in the novel parts and combination of parts to be described hereinafter, all of which contribute to produce an eflicient holding device for smokers articles.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described in the following specification, while the broad scope of the invention is pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing: I
Figure 1 is a perspective showing a short portion of the dash to which my device has been applied.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken through the middle axis of the holder device and indicating in dotted lines the man her in which the holder canswing or fold back out of'the way. This section is on line 22 of Figure 3. j I
Figure 3 is atop plan of the holder, and shows the frame plate in horizontal section.
, In practicing the invention, I provide a frame or face plate 1 which operates as a support for the holder 2. This frame plate 1 is preferably constructed so as to be attached to a support, such as a vertical wall or a dash 3. For this purpose, ordinary screws 4 may be employed. The plate is preferably of rectangular form and has an opening 5; In this opening I mount the holder ;2 so that it normally holds the articles back of the dash, but in such a way that it can be swung'through the opening so as toexpose the articles in front of the dash. In order to accomplish this, I prefer to provide a base plate f substantially rectangularform to fit the'opening'5,and' this base plate 6 is mounted to swing on the middle vertical axis of the opening. For
this purpose, I provide a vertical pivot bar or shaft? which is mounted in the frame plate. The base plate 6 is secured to this rod so that the rod acts as a pivot for the same.
In order to enable the holder to revolve freely in the opening 5, the vertical dimension of the p1ate6 is less than the vertical dimension of the opening 5, and one of the vertical edges of the plate. 6 is located at a less distance from the axis of rotation of the holder than the vertical edges of the opening. I
The holder 2 is of substantially semicylindrical form in outline, so as to facilitate the receptacles, which it carries, clearing the edges of the opening when the holder is swung on its axis. f In other words, I mount the receptacles all on' one side of the plate 6 so that they are all located on one side of the axis of rotation. In order to accomplish this, I construct this part of the holder of substantially semi-cylindrical form and provide a receptacle 8, adjacent the plate, open at its upper side to receive cigars or cigarettes 9. The body of the holder also includes a match receptacle '10 and an ashtray having an opening 11 in its upper wall12. The ash trayzis preferably located adjacent the plate, and is in the form of a removable elongatedcup 13 which maybe inserted through an opening at the bottom of the body and held in place by a tongue 14 mounted on the bottom plate 15 of the holder by means of a pivot screw 16 (see Figs. 2 and a 3). By moving this tongue 14: to one side, the ash cup 13 can be readily removed. The match holder may be constructed with a block 17 at its lower end which operates to hold the upper ends of the matches exposed when the match box is set down over it (see Fig. '1).
Figs. 1 and 2 show the holder in position to expose the articles for the smokers use,
order to accomplish this, if desired, one edge of the base plate 6 may be constructed with a projection in the form of aflange 18 (see Fig. 3). In the opened position, this'flange lies against the edge of the opening on the outer side of the face of the wallin which the device is mounted. Inthe folded posi tion of the holder, this flange lies against the face plate on the other side of the axis of rotation, and limits the inward swinging movement of the holdei in each direction. In order to swing the holder out into View, itis merely necessary to exert a slightpressure atthe point indicated by the arrow 19, whereupon the holder will swing around as indicated by the other arrow on Fig. 3;
What I claim is: r y c 1. In a holding device for smokers articles, the combination of a supporting memher having an openingtherein, a holder pivotally mounted in said opening to revolve on a vertical axis located about on the vertical axis ofthe opening, said holder having a vertical dimension smaller than the vertical dimension of the opening and having one of its side edges at less distance from the axis of rotation of the holder than the vertical edge of said opening whereby the holder is capable of revolving in the opening so as to place the holder in position to expose the articles carried in the holder, and means for stopping the revolving moveinent of the holder in each direction operating, to hold the holder in its open position and in its closed position.
2. In a holding device for smokers articles adapted to be mounted within the body of an automobile, the combination of a sub stantially rectangular frame having means for; attaching the same to' the automobile body, said frame having a substantially rectangular opening therein, a. holder pivotally mounted in said opening to revolveon a ver tical axis located about on the vertical axis of the opening, having a vertical dimension smaller than the vertical dimension of the opening, said holder further having one of its side edges at less distance from the axis of rotation ofthe liol'der than the vertical edge of said opening whereby the holder is capable ofrevolving in the opening so as to place the holder in position to expose the articles carried in the holder, one of the edges of the holder having a projecting 3 pivotally flange operating to strike against one edgeof said opening when the holder is in its closed position, and against the opposite edge of said opening when the holder is in its open position, and thereby: limit the swinging movement of the holderin each direction.
3. In a device to be used as an attachment for the dash of an'automobile for holding smokers aticles, the combination of a sup porting frame consisting of a plate with a substantially rectangular opening therein to register with a corresponding opening in the dash, a holder having a base-plate pivotally mounted on the vertical central axis of said, opening and carrying a plurality of receptacles on one side of the same, said base-plate operating to swing through said opening to enable the receptacles to move from the rear side to point in front of the frame plate to expose the smokers articles.
' 4. In a device to be used as an attachment for the dashof an automobile, for carrying smokers articles, the combination of a frame-plate with means for securing the Same in an opening in the dash, said frameplate having, an opening therein, a holder mounted on the vertical middle axis of the opening and carrying a receptacle for cigarettes and a receptacle for ashes adjacent theplate, and a receptacle for matches remote from the plate, and all located on one side ofthe axis of rotation, enabling the said receptacles to be swung through the opening from the rear to expose them at the front of the dash. I
5. In a device for holding smokers articles to be used as an attachment for 'the dash of an automobile, the combination of a substantially rectangular"frame-plate with an opening therein, and having means for securing the same to the forward side of the dash, aholder having a base plate to'cover the said opening and pivotally mounted to swing on the vertical middle axis of the opening, said holder having receptacles for the smokers articles secured on one side of the baseplate, and operating in one position to hold the base-plate in the opening with the receptacles for the cles concealed back of the dash, and adapted to be swung on the axis to bring. thei'eceptacles through the opening and into a position to expose the. smokers articles at the outer side of the dash, sa'id frame having a projecting frame and sition. e
6. In a holdingdevice forsmol er's articles, the combination of a supporting member having an opening therein, a holder pivotally mounted in said opening torevolve on a vertical axis located about on the vertical axis of theopening, said holder having a vertical dimension smaller than the verstop the holder in the latter po smokers artiflange at one sidetoenga the.
tical dimension of the opening and having one of its side edges at less distance from the axis of rotation of the holder than the vertical edge of said opening whereby the holder is capable of revolving in the opening so as to place the holder in position to expose the articles carried in the holder, one of the edges of the holder having a projection operating to strike against one edge of said opening on the outer side when the 10 holder is in its closed position, and against position, and thereby limitthe swinging movement of the holder in each direction.
