Marchlo, 192s.
. H. R. VAUGHAN TORCH M, W W W ATTORNEY ffl Patented Mer. 2o, 192s.. i
UNITED HOWARD R. VAUGHAN, OF VICTORIA, VIRGINIA.
, TORCH.
Application filed May 14, 1927. Serial No. 191,386.r
My present invention has reference to improvements in kerosene or like liquid fuel burning hand torches and my primary object is the provision ofa simple but thoroughly effective means for regulating or adjusting the wick of such torches. l
A further vobject is to arrange around the wick tube of a torch of this character a sleeve that is slidable in both directions of the tube and is provided with means for holding the same adjusted, the outerend of the wick being passed through the sleeve, so that the sleeve may be adjusted and properly arranged with respect to the burnt outer end of the wick.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the improvement consists in the novel construetion, combination and operative association of parts as set forth in the following description and pointed out with partlcularity in the appended claims.
ln the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a torch in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional View and on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
The conical body of the torch is. indicated by the numeral 1 and is provided on its side with the usual handle 2. Passing through the restricted upper mouth portion of the body l there is a wick tube 3. The tube has its lower end disposed a suitable distance from 'the bottom of the can or body l, the said tube being perforated, as at 4, and receiving therethrough the usual wick 5. The tube, adjacent to its lower end, is sury rounded by a ring 6 which is soldered or otherwise fixed thereon.
Arranged to surround and slidably mounted on thewick tube 3 there is a sleeve 7. Threaded in the mouth of the body 1 there is a nut 8. This nut has an outer exteriorly threaded portion 9 that has rightangular slits therethrough so that the said portion 9 is compressible. The tube passes directly through the nut 8. Screwed on the outer compressible end 9 of the nut 8 there is a cap nutlO through which the tube 7 also passes. The wick 5 is, of course, directed through the tube 7, and it will be apparentv that by adjusting the cap nut 9 on the fixed nut 8 the sleeve 7 may be held in desired adjustable positions on the wick tube 3.
yBy an arrangement as above described it will be seen that as the wick burns land the sleeve 7 is moved downwardly on the` wick tube 3, and locked thereon by the nut l0, a proper adjustment may be at all times retained between the outer end of the sleeve andthe outer or burnt end of thewick, so that the necessity of moving the wick longitudinally through the wick tube 3 is entirely `and effectively dispensed with. The downward movement of the sleeve 7, that is the movement of the sleeve into the body 1 is limited by the contact of the sleeve with the stop ring 6. f
The improvement isy of an extremely simple construction and as a matter-of-fact may provide an attachment for any torch or wick burningV lamps. It will be obvious that with my improvement the entire burnable portion of the wick may be used without waste and, as stated, without the necessity of the ordinary adjustment, and the advantages thereof will, itis fhmlght: be'
on the tube, movable through the torch bnody,
means for clamping the sleeve adjusted kon the tube and means for limiting thev movement ofthe sleeve in the direction of the tube.
3. The combination with a torch body having a wick tube therein and a wick passing through the tube, a nut member screwed in the mouth of the body and having an outer threaded portion which is slitted, a sleeve slidable through the nut and surrounding the wick tube and through which the wick also passes, a cap nut surrounding the sleeve and engaging the compressible end of the nut and a stop ring on theV wick tube adjacentto the lower end thereof, 'all as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
