CAP GUN.
Applicationled September 13, 1926. Serial No. 135,239.,v
This invention relates Vto soundingtoys andl aims to provide novel means whereby a cap of the explosivetype may be exploded to cause a projectile to be thrown through .5theair. f v
An important object ofthe invention `is to provide a device of this character .wherein the cap to be exploded is held within a recess formed in the projectile, the recess in the projectile also affording means whereby the reduced end of the head at one end of the barrel of the device may be inserted to support the projectile on the head for firing purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of this character wherein the plunger engages the head to cause the projectile to be moved against the head to explode the cap, the construction being such that the plunger does notat any time contact with the cap. Y
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi# nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without .departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the plunger employed as one of the elements o the invent-ion.
Figurel 6- is a sectional View through a modified form of the invention.
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view through the head employed in the modified form ofthe invention.
Figure 8 is a sectional view through a modified form Vofhead and projectile. Y
Figure 9 is an elevational view illustrating the inner end of the projectile as shown by Figure 8.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
reference *character xdesignatesthe barrel l A Vof the device, onexendof the barrel being closed-by the head 6 which is secure-din position by means of the rivets 7.. .This head is :formed with areduced end portion 8 which is preferably circular' in cross sectionvand adapted to be fitted in the circularopening formed in the projectilevQ.` i.
. The projectile 9 ac tsas a support,` forthe cap which is exploded to accomplish the ypurpose'of the invention, the capy in the present instancel being indicated by the ref-V erence character 10, and it will be seen that in the operation of the toy, the cap is'posi tioned within the opening of the projectile and the projectile positioned over thereduced end 8, in a manner as shown by Figure 2.
The plunger forming a part of the'invention includes a solid portion 11 designed to engage the head 6, the plunger being moved forwardly by the action. of the coiled spring 12, which is positioned within the barrel 5,
one endthereof engaging ,the member 11, while the opposite end engages the washer 13V positioned in the opposite end of the barrel 5.
A rod 14 forms a. part of the plunger and is of a length so that `one end of'the'rod will extend beyond one end of the barrel to be gripped by the hand of the operator to retract the plunger which when released engages the head 6 with such forceas to cause the projectile 9 to move towards the head, exploding the `cap positioned within the projectile. It follows that the force of the explosion will cause the projectile to be thrown through the air.
y In the form of the invention as illustrated by sheet 2 of the drawings, the barrel is indicated by the reference character 15, one
end of the barrel in this showing being` closed by the head 16 that is provided with a recess to accommodate the extension 17 forming a part yof the projectile 18. In this form of the invention, the cap which is indicated at 19 is held within the head 16 and exploded when the plunger, to be hereinafter more' fully described, is forced against. the head 16. y
In orderl that the projectiles of the devices will be guided with a degree'of accuracy, blades 2O are provided thereon, on opposite sides.
As illustrated the barrel 15 is connected device is used as a bow and arrow, the ilexi-V ble member 22 being drawn rearwardly and y released, to cause the firing of the cap.
In the modified form of the head and projectile as shown by Figure 8,the head `indicated at 25, is formed with a central opening Vto receive the cap' 26v and vthe projectile. which is shown at`27 is provided with a Circular groove to receive the portion of the head formed by the openingin thev end thereof.. Y
Like the other forms ofthe invention, the
VVprojectile 27 is provided withblades 28 to direct the projectile :in its Hight.
It might beI further stated that it is contemplated to construct the projectiles of a soft material such as rubber, cork or the like so that a person could not be injured .if n struck vkby the projectile.
I claim:
' In a device of the character described, a barrel, a head closing one end of the barrel, an extension on the head, a projectile having an opening' to accommodate the eXtension, said opening adapted to accommodate a cap to be engaged by the extension, a spring pressed plungerv operating in the barrel and adapted to be forced against the head to explode the cap to force the projectile from the head. f j
v In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as own, I have hereto affixedmy signature. v Y
