,n This invention relates to locks, and has more particular reference to a padlock of generally simplified and improved construction, The primary object of the presentinvention is tov provide a padlock wherein simple and effective means is provided for releas ably securing or retaining the shackle of the lock in locking position.
Amore specific object of the inventionis to provide an improved form of padlock including a pivoted shackle, and simple and effective means for releasably retaining the bow or shackle in locked lposition including manually rotatable tumbler disks capable of being` set for permitting movement of the bow or shackle to unlocked or open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a padlock of the above type which is susceptible of slight structural changes to vary the operating combination, to prevent duplication of the locks.
A further object of the invention is to provide a padlock of the above kind wherein simple means is provided for facilitating manual rotation and setting of the tumbler disks for effecting release of the bow `or shackle in an expeditious manner by an authorized person, while at the same time 30 presenting a construction wherein it will be extremely diflicult for an unauthorized person to effect release` of the bow or shackle.
Other' objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, coinbination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accoi'upanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the embodiment of the invention illustrated consists in a padlock having a casing com-k posed of a pair of somewhat similar seotions 5 and 6 rigidly and permanently secured together in side by side contiguous relationby suitablemea-ns such as rivets 7 passing through the casing sections at suitable spaced points: near the edges of the casing sections. The sections 5 and 6"of the lock casing are provided in their adjacent sides or surfaces with mating relatively large and circular recesses 8 which cooperate to form a circular chamber in thelock casing within which are rotatably fitted a plurality of tumbler disks` 9. Referring to Figure 3 it will be seen that graduations are provided at each edge ory along each longitudinal edge of each slot through which the arms 1l project, and the lateral ends of adjacent pairs ot arms 11 are directed in opposite directions so as to respectively cooperate with the graduations at opposite sides of the slots.

Rigid with and projecting inwardly from the pivoted end of the bow or shackle 17 is an arm 20 which extends into the .space between the pairs of tumbler disks and tcrniinales at its inner end at' a point above the pivot pin ot' the tumbler disks. A detent arm 2l is also disposed between the pairs of tulnbler disks and is pivot ally attached at its upper end to thc inner end of the arm .Ztl as indicated at :22, said detent arm ll being of a length to extend past the pivot pin to the lower edges ot the tumbler disks where it is provided at its lower :tree end with a transverse head 23. However. by properly setting the pointers 1Q of the respective arms 1l ot' the tumbler disks with relation to the graduations l5 on the lock casing7 the tumbler disks 9 will be partially1 rotated until brought to a position wherein the slots 16 of all the tumbler disks are registered beneath the pivot pin and coincident` with the head 23 of the detent arm 21. Obviously. when the tumbler disks arc thus jmsitioned with all ot the slots lt registered. the. head .23 will be tree to move upwardly in the slots 1G toward the pivot pin. thereby permitting the arms Q() and 21 to rise and allowing the bow or shackle lT to be swung to the open position indicated in Figure (i. Naturally. one, familiar with the proper setting ot the pointers lf2 may readily set the tumbler disks for effecting release of the shacklet while one not familiar with the same will have conside able diiliculty in doing so.
As disclosed in Figures 1() and 1l, in lieu of the use of the graduations 15. a device may be provided for application to the lock casing for facilitating proper positioning of the pointers 12 wherein the tumbler disks are setv with their slots 1G registered to permit opening or unlocking of the bow or llo lill) shackle 17. This device preferably consists of a flat plate 24 adapted to be flatly disposed against one side of the lock casing and having a pair ot' laterally extending lugs 25 upon each end thereof disposed to extend across the `respective slots in which the tumbler disk arms 11 are movable and so spaced that when the arms 11 are set with one of the same contacting the inner edge of each of the lugs 25, the discs 9 will be positioned with their slots 16 registered as shown in Figure 6. The plate. 24 is preferably provided with curved end flanges 26 adapted to snugly engage the arcuate side edge portions of the lock casing when applied, as shown in Figure 11, whereby the device is firmly retained properly positioned, except for the requirement of manually holding the plate 24 into contact with the surface of the lock casing. The lugs 25 preferably project from the ends of the flanges 26 as shown, and in order to permit the plate 24 to flatly engage the lock casing, the same is provided with :i central opening as at 27, into which the adjacent head of the rivet or pivot pin 10 may project. bviously, the distance at which the lugs 25 of each pair are spaced apart will be entirely governed by the relation of the arms 11 to the slots 16 of' the tumbler disks and the corresponding relative positions at which Athe arms 11 must be set for effecting registering of the slots 16 of the tumbler disks. Obviously, the device of Figure 10 may be quickly applied to the padlock as indicated in Figure 11 and the pointers can be quickly set so that the unlocking ot the shackle may be effected in an expeditious manner. It is simply necessary to know which pointers are to engage with the uppermost lugs, and as shown, t-he inner disk of each pair is the one the arm of which to be swung upwardly to engage the uppermost lug 25 at each side of the lock casing.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, it will be readily apparent that the radial slots 16 in the tumbler disks may be formed inV a variety of posit-ions with respect to the arms 11 of the disks. It is conteniplated to prevent duplication, of the unlocking combination to vary the position of the radial slot of at least one tumbler disk, so that a great number of combinations may be produced. As an example, it will be noted that the slot in each disk of the series may be so formed as to be positioned at many different angles, and as there are four distinct disks the number of combinations which locks of this type may possess will be sufiicient to prevent duplication. Furthermore, it is contemplated to produce padlocks of this general structural form embodying from two to six or more tumbler disks. The cheaper locks employing only two disks would not be susceptible of as great a range of relative arrangement of the slots therein as would locks having a greater number of' disks, but would never-` theless be susceptible of varied combinations. The number of combinations'might also be increased by increasing the diameters of the disks, it being readily apparent that disks ot larger diameter would permit the formation of a greater number of slots so asto present a relatively greater number of different combinations. i Y

Vhat I claim as new is 1. A lock comprising a casing including assembled relatively fixed sections, a shackle carried by the casing and movable to locking and released positions, a plurality of slotted disks arranged in the casing and rotatable to relative positions with their slots in registry at a predetermined point and to other relative position with their slots o ut ofl registry, manually operable means for adjusting said tumbler disks, and a member operatively pivotally connected to an angular extension of the shackle and extending substantially diametrically ofl the disks and restrained from movement by the tumbler disks when the latter are relatively positioned with theirr slots out of registry for restraining the shackle in locked position.` said member being movable into the slots of the tumbler disks when the latter are positioned with their slots in registry for permitting movement of the shackle to released position, said casing having circumferential slots in its periphery, and said manually operable means embodying arms rigid with the tumbler disks and projecting outwardly through and movable in said slots.
