Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THALBERG BIEDENFELD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,249, dated August 3, 1875; application filed May 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THALBERG BIEDEN- FELD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Medicinal Compound, which is fully described in the following specification:
This invention relates to that class of compounds used for medical purposes which are composed mainly or Wholly of the desiccated flowers, root-s, leaves, or seeds of plants possessing medicinal virtues, the said elements being mechanically mixed together; and it consists in a compound of the following-named ingredients, the proper proportion of each elernent for every pound of the compound being given, viz:
-Folia sennse, seven ounces; herba taceee, pentandria monoginia, (pansi,) one-half ounce;
I herba melissee,one-fourth ounce; radixalthma,
one ounce; flores lavandulze, one ounce; flores rhoeados, one-eighthounce; flores millefolinm, achillea nobilis, (yarroW-flowers,) one half ounce; herba rubus fructicosus, (blackberryleaves,) one-eighth ounce; herba verbasci, onefourth ounce; semen anisi, one ounce; semen foeniculi, onehalf ounce; semen coriandri, one ounce; radix liquiritize, three-fourths ounce; flores malvee vulgaris, one-fourth ounce; flores sambuci, one-fourth ounce; semen carui, onehalf ounce; cream of tartar, one ounce.
These elements, with one exception, are all vegetable, and I prefer to use for the preparation of my compound the fresh desiccated 1eaves,fl0wers,&c., knownin the trade. They may be first bruised or coarsely'powdered,
and then intimately mixed together mechanically. If not intended for immediate use it should be kept in closed packages, in which state, if kept dry, it may be preserved for a long time without deterioration.
The compound is intended to be used as a tea, and the infusion may be made with boiling Water in the usual manner. The amount taken depends, of course, very much on the infusion and the idiosyncrasies of the patient.
Its therapeutic effect results mainly from its action on the blood, but its carminative effect is also marked. When small doses of an infusion made from my compound are given, it acts as an expectorant. Larger doses act as a purgative.
Having thus described my invention, I claim--' A compound for medical purposes, composed of folia sennae, herba tacece, pentandria monoginia, (pansi,) herba melissce, radix. altheea, flores lavandulze, flores rhoeados, flores millefolii, achillea nobilis, (yarrow-flowers,) herba rubus fructicosus, (blackberry-leaves,) herba verbasoi, semen anisi, semen foeniculi, semen coriandri, radix liquiritize, flores malvae vulgaris, flores sambuci, semen carui, and cream of tartar, in about the proportions specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THALBERG BIEDENFELD. Witnesses:
