UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID W. RAWSON, OF GROYDON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLCTHES-POUNDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,224, dated August 3, 1875; application filed July 18, 1874.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID W. RAWSON, of (Jroydon, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Apparatus for Washing Clothes, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of implements used in washing clothes, by which the atmosphere is utilized as an auxiliary to the operation of pounding and rubbing.
Figure 1 is an elevated view of a clotheswasher involving my said invention. is a view of the valve-box and valve.
A, Fig. 1, is the valve-box, inserted in the tube or handle B. D is a hollow expanded foot, having a number of beads or rims embossed thereon. S is a spiral spring constructed of copper, brass, or other suitable material, attached to the inside of the foot D at its up per and smallest part 0, and projecting from one to two inches below the bottom of the foot- D. A, Fig. 2, is the valve-box; V, the valve, and F a cylindrical aperture passing through the valve-box, and communicating with the tube or handle B.
The operation of my improved clothes-washer is as follows: When the washer is intro- Fig. 2
duced into a tub containing the clothes and water suitably prepared, and is worked up and down by the hand, or suitable mechanism, air is forced down through the tube B by means of the motion and the valve V, and escapes at the edge of the expanded foot D, driving the water before it, and dispersing itself and the water through the clothes, thoroughly removing all impurities.
The spiral spring S is the improvement for which I now pray that Letters Patent may be granted. Its function is to raise. the washer to its original position after it has been depressed, thereby greatly lessening the labor of opera-ting it, and also, by striking and rubbing against the clothes, to assist in removing the impurities.
What I claim is The combination of the valve V, the tube or handle B. the expanded foot D, and the spiral spring S, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
DAVID W. RAWSO'N.
