UNITED STATES GEORGE H. BROWN, OF NEVADA, MISSOURI.
AUTOMATIC PORCH LIGHT.
Application filed October 22, 1921.
The object of the invention is to provide a porch illuminating and alarm mechanism whereby a pilot light may be maintained as a means of illuminating the house number or designation for the guidance of persons looking for the house, and whereby when the door but-ton is pushed by a visitor to announce his approach, the sounding of the alarm or signal bell within the house is accompanied by the turning on of a discovery light which illuminates the space immediately adjacent to the door and hence brings the visitor plainly into view, so that the identity of the visitor may be disclosed to 5 the occupants of the house before taking steps to permit admission; and with this general object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a "view substantially in diagram to show an arrangement of elements and wiring embodying the invention as applied to a porch covered entrance door of a building such as a residence.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the several circuits and the elements con tained within the junction box, the magnets and switch tongue or armature being disposed, however, in a horizontal plane.
The apparatus embodies a push button 10 or its equivalent for arrangement as in the ordinary practice adjacent to and outside of the entrance door 11 of a building or dwelling, designed primarily to close the circuit through conductors 12 including an alarm bell 13 of any preferred type and a source of energy supplied for example through the service conductors 14, and to this end the conductors 15 from the push button together with the conductors 12 and the service conductors run into a junction or switch box 16. d
An illuminating unit 17 is preferably arranged in a hood or display box 18 bearing the street number of the building as ameans of indentifying the same and said unit is connected by conductors 19 and 20 respecm tively with one of the supply conductors ll and with a contact 21 in the junction or switch box, and a porch illuminating unit Serial No. 509,563.
22 disposed in any convenient position adjacent to the door and adapted to bring into view any one standing at or desiring admission through the door is connected by the branch conductor'23 with the conductor 19 and by means of a conductor 24 with a contact 2 5 in the junction or switch box, said contacts 21 and 25 being selectively engageable by a switch tongue 26 movable in opposite directions for example by electro- magnets 27 and 28, or the equivalents thereof of ing is approached and the push button 10 is actuated the position of the switch is reversed to cut out the unit 17 and close the circuit including the unit 22 or door light,
at the same time that the circuit is closed including the alarm bell 13. Obviously as soon as the push button 10 is released the sounding of the alarm bell will cease as in the ordinary practice but the switch having been reversed will maintain the unit 22 in operation to clearly display the person standing at the door and awaiting admission to the end that parties within the house may obtain a clear view of the visitor before opening the door.
When the visitor has been admitted or has left the door the parts may be restored to their normal position by the operation of the push button 29 which reverses the switch to extinguish the lighting unit 22 and re ]light the unit 17 to display the house num- Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A house service door alarm system having in combination an outside push button switch, an inside alarm device in circuit with said push button switclnan outside house identifying light unit, a door illuminatin light unit, a source of electrical supply wit 1 second interior push button switch for actuating said selective switch in the Opposite direction.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature. I
GEORGE H. BROWN.
