MANKIN, OF DUNCAN, OKLAHOMA- GAUGE COCK.
Application filed March 6, 1926. Serial No. 92,809.
This invention has reference to a gauge cock for boilers and aims to simplify and improve the existing art by the provision of a valve which is seated by the steam pressure in the boiler and is also held to its seat by spring means to insure the proper seating of the valve under all conditions even should breakage occur in the parts of the improvement outside of the boiler during high pressure, and which valve is readily unseated to accurately indicate the safety point of the waterin the boiler.
The drawing which accompanies and forms part of this application illustrates the improvement;
The drawing shows an approximately central longitudinal sectional view through a gauge cock in accordance with this invention attached to a boiler which is also in section.
As disclosed by the drawing the gauge cock comprises an elongated body 1 that has a round here 2 extending longitudinally therethrough. In the bore there is provided a flared shoulder that affords a seat 3 for a valve 4. The stem of the valve is indicated by the numeral 6, and projects through the bore 2. The stem 6 is peripherally formed with longitudinal grooves 7 and with a circun'ifercntial depression 8 tiat communicates with the grooves 7. The depression 8 is arranged opposite a por 9 in the body 1 of the gauge cock. The stem 6 is provided with an additional circunifen ential depression in which is seated a packing ring 10 that, of course, contacts with the wall of the bore 2.
The outer or projecting end of the stem is reduced and threaded, and has scre wed thereon a cap nut 11. Surrounding this portion of the stem, and exerting a. tension between the cap nut and the lower wall of the gauge body 1 there is a helical spring 12 which urges the stem in an outward direction to bring the valve a to seated position.
The lower or outer end of the body 1 has a curved arm 13 which is preferably integrally formed therewith and pivoted to the outer end of this arm there is a lever 1% having on its outer end a pull cord 15. Obviously by swinging the lever to bring the same against the cap nut the valve will be unseated. The bodyl, directly in a line with the valve seat has an offset portion 16 handle, and consequently the valve on its stem, will remove such obstacles, andit will be further apparent that by threading the head on the stem the tension of the spring may be regulated by holding the stem from turning and screwing the head thereon.
Itis believed that the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings will fully set forth the construction and advantages of our im proveinent to those skilled in theart to which such inventions relate, but, we, of course, do not wish to be restricted to the precise details'herein set forth and hold ourselves entitled to such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what We claim. I
