Application filed N'ovember The present invention relates to a safety device for air hose couplings such as are used in the train air lines, and has for its prime object to provide a coupling structure having a valve incorporated therein with means associated therewith so that the valve must be fully opened before the coupling can be coupled.
Another very important objectof the invention lies in the provision of a device of this nature which is simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable to withstand the comparative rough usage to which it will be put in practice, thoroughly reliable and etlicient in operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that the letter A denotes a conventional coupling head having the usual cam interlocking finger 5 and the usual body 6. The letter B denotes generally my improved coupling head which includes the usual form of body 7 and the usual form of cam interlocking linger 8. As is well known, the lingers 5 and 8 engage with cam lugs 9 and 10, respectively, projecting respectively from bodies 7 and 6.
A valve 11 is cast integrally with the improved head B and is operable by a crank 12 which has a depending extension is merging into an arcuate extension 15. When the valve is closed, the crank is disposed in the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 that is so that the arcuate extension 15 extends bet-ween the body 7 and the finger 8, thus preventing the coupling of the head B to the head A. With this arrange ment it will be seen that the crank must be 23, 1926. Serial No. 150,279.
.tiie invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement'of the invention and the above description. t will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as herein- 7 after claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a coupling structure; wherein a coupling head includes a body having an interlocking finger extending therefrom ter minating in spaced relation thereto for the purpose of receiving a cam lug of a co-mating coupling head, and a valve structure adjacent the first mentioned head; an operating crank having an end operatively engaged with the valve and extending upwardly from the coupling structure, said operating crank terminating in an angu larly disposed extension merging into an arcuate extension and being mounted to swing downwardly between the finger and the body to close the valve only when the cam lug of the co-mating coupling head is entirely outside the space between the body and the finger.

In a coupling structure; wherein a coupling head includes a body having an interlocking finger extending therefrom termi- 100 hating in spaced relation thereto for the purpose of receiving a cam lug of a co-mating head, and a valve structure adjacent the first mentioned head; an operating crank operatively engaged with the valve, said crank having an extension movable into the space between the body and the finger from a position above said space only when the 03111 lug of the co-inating head is free from the space between the body and the finger, the valve being closed as the extension moves downwardly between the body and the finger and opened when disposed outside of and above the space between the finger and the body.
