Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN B. PRIN DLE, OF BANTAM FALLS, CONN ECTICT.
IMPROVEMENT IN lTl-'llLL-c'zouPLlNc cLAMPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,14 l, dated July 27, 1875; application led `April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LYMAN B. PRINDLE, of Bantam Falls, in the county of Litchield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Carriage-Clip Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact .description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my device 5 and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The object of this invention is to obtain a device which will att'ord great facility in attaching thills to their clips Where anti rattling springs are applied between the clips and the eyes of the thill-irons.
The nature of my invention consists in two pivoted clamping-jaws, one ot' which is cupped, and the other is forked, in combination with a clamping-screw. The invention also consists in a bracket for supporting the eye of a thilliron in proper position for introducing the bolt, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate the two clamping-jaws of the device, the lower ends of which are curved and pivoted together at a. The upper end of the jawA has a rectangular cupshaped cavity, b, formed in its inner side, as shown in Fig. l and the up- Vper part of the jaw A is forked, as designated by the letter c, which forks are beveled outwardly. Just below the forks c, and on theinner side of jaw A', a bracket, d, is formed, and below this bracket an oblong slot, c, is made through the jaw A', as shown in Fig. 1.
B designates a screw having aT-shaped head, B', and a shoulder, f. This screw is passed through the slot e loosely, and tapped through the jaw A below the cavity b. The slot e allows the shank ofthe screw B to play up and down freely while setting upthe jaws.
To use the vise, the cup b isadjusted on the rear end of the clipstrap, and the forks o are adjusted against a thill-iron eye, and astride of a thill. The thill-iron eye is then introduced between the ears of a clip, and a rubber block is put between the thill-iron eye on the front part ofthe embracing portion ofthe clip. The
screw B is now turned until the eye of the thilliron coincides with the holes through the ears of the clip, when the bolt can be easilyintroduced, and the nut `applied on it. The vise is then loosened and removed, allowing the anti-rattling block to expand.
The bracket l is designed for supporting the l eye of the thill-iron, and holding up the same While compressing the rubber block and introducing the bolt.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of pivoted jaws A A', clamping-screw B, fork c, and cup b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. lThe clamping-jaws, provided with bracket d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ln testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LYMAN B. PRINDLE.
