ELECTRIC DRIVING SYSTEM.
Application filed January 7, 1927, Serial No. 159,729, and in the Netherlands September 14, 1925.
Cylinder talking machines with electrical or mechanical switch devices, which are controlled by sound boxes which are moved longitudinally to and fro in accordance with the rotation of the record cylinder, are already known. The rotation of the cylinder is produced in this kind of apparatus not by electrical but by mechanical means. A well known arrangement comprising several machines is costly, while other arrangements employing only one talking machine require a number of record cylinders which is likewise costly.
It is also known to operate talking machines by means of the door, but hitherto these talking machines have been operated mechanically and are very crude in construction so that they have not been used commercially.
There are also apparatus in which the operation of the talking machine is Controlled by means of optical picture strips or films, but these are apparatus of quite a different kind.
The advertising talking machine according to the present invention is however driven by means of an electric motor and has only one record cylinder with an arbitrary number of announcements, the operation of the cylinder being wholly electrical and automatic. The apparatus is simple and works with absolute reliability.
The improved talking machine is characterized by the fact that a contact spring attached to the sound box makes contact at intervals with a series of current contacts, which by means of a contact roller, can be brought into connection with a second series of contacts, and the latter series of contacts can be connected to the current supply or line has been completely reproduced the motor is reversed and at the same time, in the well known way, the sound box is raised and run I back again, while the switch roller or barrel simultaneously with the sound box is brought into the original position. The contact roller has a ratchet wheel in the teeth of which a pawl fixed to the core of a magnet engages, which core normally is withdrawn by a spring from the magnet coil; while when the current is passing through the magnet coil and the core is drawn into the coil, by periodically closing a contact in the ratchet wheel, and with it the switch roller, is rotated one tooth by means of the pawl whereby the contact roller is so moved that the motor is switched on or reversed and the coil cut out of circuit.
When the door is opened, thus closing the door switch, the talking machine is set in operation. \Vhen a sentence or other portion of the recorded matter has been reproduced by the talking machine, the contact spring strikes against the first contact and the motor is stopped. If the door now be opened again, the talking machine repeats the fol lowing sentence or portion, and so on, until all the recorded matter has been reproduced. The motor is then automatically reversed and the parts return to the original position.
A constructional form of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawings.

The electrically driven and automatically ltltl acting advertising talking machine consists of an electric motor 1 with a speed regulator or governor 2 (supported by a bracket 40) and a belt pulley 8, said pulley acting by means of a belt 4 and a tension roller 5 on the belt pulley 6 which is carried on the shaft 7 ofthe mandrel 9 that supports the record cylinder 10.
On the shaft 7 is also mounted a toothed wheel 11, which co-operates with a toothed wheel 12 on the worm shaft 13. Along this worm shaft runs a holder 1 1 carrying the sound box 15 which is supported at the front by a small wheel 16 running on a bearing surface 17 with an upper and a lower track. The sound produced by the sound box 15 is transmitted to the horn 18 which may be conveniently built into the casing 19. On the holderlat is lined a contact spring 20 which is guided along the contacts 21 on an insulated base plate such as ebonite for example. These contacts 21 cooperate with the contacts of the switch roller or barrel 22 and are brought into electrical connection therewith.
On the shaft 52; oi this switch roller 22 is keyed a ratchet wheel 24, on the teeth oi which a small rod or pawl 2:} acts. This small rod 25 tired crosswise in the arms oi a yoke or rod at) which on the one hand is attached to a movable magnet core of the magnet coil 28 and on the other hand to a fixed point 230 by means at a retractile spring 29. Normally the s jiring withdraws the core 27 from the coil 28. The magnet coil 28 is surrounded by an iron yok 31 which carries a core 32 which extends into the magnetcoil and has a copper head A door contact device or switch 34, see Figure 9, is also provided, one member of which is connected to one pole of a source of current 35, a transformer for example, which is connected to the line conductors 36, while the other member is connected to a contact 0. The magnet coil 28 has one terminal connected to a contact 05 and the other terminal to the other pole of the source of current 35. i

21, and both series are adapted to be selectively engaged by the rows or lines of contacts on the periphery of the switch roller 22.
The apparatus works as follows:

Contact 20 also moves simultaneously with the sound box 15. It contact 20 be brought on to c in the second series, which is connected to c of the first series, the magnet 28 will be energized whereby the contact roller 22 will be rotated one tooth forwards. The row y of the roller is thereby brought above the series of contacts AFa b so that the roller again makes connect-ion between ib and the motor is stopped. It now the door switch be closed again by opening the door, the contact roller 22 will again be rotated forwards one tooth, the connection A-B, C 1), E-F, acl closed by the row 6 oi the roller, the motor started and the talking machine will reproduce the next portion of the recorded words so that the contact 20 will be brought on to the contact: (6 ol the second series. The magnet 28 will again be energized, the switch roller 22 rotated one tooth torward again and the motor stopped.
Every time the door is opened therefore the talking machine will reproduce a portion of its phonographic'text by means ot the door switch until finally the row 71' ot the contact roller connects the contacts A.B, CD, E-F and at when the talking machine will repeat the last part of its message and the sound box 15 will be raised by its roller 16 being shifted onto the upper track of bearing 17.
V/hen the contact 20 is brought on to the contact 6 of the second series the magnet 28 will be energized, and the roller will'be rotated one tooth -forward, whereby the last contact row p of the roller will produce the connection A. the motor runs in the reverse direction and the sound b0 15 runs backward, until the contact 20 is brought on to the contact a of the second series, after which tlie naguet 28 is again energized and the roller 22 rotated one tooth, whereupon the cycle begins over again.
I claim as my invention: 1. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating ele-' ment; a member traveling relatively to said element; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit including current. supply means; two series of contacts, one of which is connected in said circuit for controlling the starting, stopping and reversii'ig of the motor; a circuit having included therein a source of cu rrent and certain contacts oi the second ries; a set of secondary contacts each connected to one of the remaining contacts of the second series; a rotary switch cylinder provided with groups of contacts tor engagement with contacts of both series; a
spring contact carried by the traveling member to successively engage the secondary contacts to control the opening and closing of the circuits through the switch cylinder contacts; and an electromagnetic device in the second-named circuit for stepping the switch cylinder each time that circuit is closed.
2. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling relatively to said element; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit including current supply means; two series of contacts, one of which is connected in said circuit for controlling the starting, stopping and reversing of the motor; a circuit having included therein a source of current and certain contacts of the second series; a set of secondary contacts each connected to one of the remaining contacts of the second series; a rotary switch cylinder provided with a plurality of parallel, longitudinal rows of contacts for engagement with contacts of both series; a spring contact carried by the traveling member to successively engage the secondary contacts to control the opening and closing of the circuits through the switch cylinder contacts; and an electromagnetic device in the second-named circuit for stepping the switch cylinder each time that circuit is closed.
3. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling relatively to said element; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; amotor circuit including current supply means; two series of contacts, one of which is connected in said circuit for controlling the starting, stopping and reversing of the motor; a circuit having included therein a source of current and certain contacts of the second series; a set of secondary contacts each connected to one of the ren'iaining contacts of the second series; a rotary switch cylinder provided with groups of contacts for engagement with contacts of both series; a spring contact carried by the traveling member to successively engage the secondary contacts to control the opening and closing of the circuits through the switch cylinder contacts; an electromagnetic device in the second-named circuit for stepping the switch cylinder each time that circuit is closed; and a main switch in the second-named circuit for closing said circuit initially.
4. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling relatively to said element; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit including current supply means; two series of contacts, one of which is connected in said circuit for controlling the starting, stopping and reversing of the motor; a circuit having included therein a source of current and certain contacts of the second series; a set of secondary contacts each connected to one of the remaining contacts of the second series; a rotary switch cylinder provided with a plurality of parallel, longitudinal rows of contacts for engagement with contacts of both series; a spring contact carried by the traveling member to successively engage the secondary contacts to control the opening and closing of the circuits through the switch cylinder contacts; an electromagnetic device in the second-named circuit for stepping the switch cylinder each time that circuit is closed; and a main switch in the second-named circuit for closing said circuit initially.
5. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling along said element from one end thereof to the other; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit; switch mechanism, including a rotary switch cylinder and associated groups of contacts, for starting and stopping the motor a predetermined number of times during the travel of said member toward one end of the rotating element and at different definite points in such travel, and for reversing the motor when said member reaches the end of its travel to restore it to starting position; and means for stepping the switch cylinder when the traveling member reaches each stopping point,

An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling along said element from one end thereof to the other; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit; switch mechanism, including a rotary cylinder provided with a plurality of parallel rows of contacts and groups of contacts associated with the cylinder contacts, for starting and stopping the motor a predetermined number of times during the travel of said member toward one end of the rotating element and at diiferent definite points in such travel, and for re versing the motor when said member reaches the end of its travel to restore it to starting position; and means for stepping the switch cylinder when the traveling member reaches each stopping point to bring a fresh row of contacts into active posit-ion.
7. An electric driving system for phonographs, comprising a motor; a rotating element; a member traveling along said element from one end thereof to the other; connections leading from the motor to the rotating element and the traveling member to operate the same; a motor circuit; switch mechanism, including a rotary switch cylinder and -21ssociated groups of contacts, for starting and stopping the motor a predetermined number of times during the travel of said moi'nhei' toward one end of the rotating element and at different definite points in such travel, and for reversing the motor when said member reaches the end of its travel to restoreit to starting position; and a spring Contact carried by the traveling member for successive engagement with thec-ontacts of 19 one of said groups of contacts to control the movements of the switch cylinder.
