GQLLoQATING TOOL GAUGE.
Application filed April 21, 1927. Serial No. 185,537.
This invention relates to improvements in collocating tool gauges, and has more particular reference to an improved form of gauge particularly serviceablein facilitating the setting of cutter bits relative to the cutter bit sockets of cutter chains commonly employed in coal cutting and mining machinery, whereby the cutter bits will project a uniform and predetermined desirable distance from thesockets.
It is well known that, in operation, the cutter bits of the cutter chains of coal cutting machinery are quickly worn, and it therefore becomes necessary to frequently adjust the cutter bits relative to their sockets in order to secure eflicient and uniform results.
While the primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of" gauge for facilitating adjustment ofcutter bits of the above kind relative to their sockets, after becoming worn it is nevertheless contemplated to employ the present in-' vention in the initial equipment of the cutter bit sockets of cutter chains with newer unused cutter bits. 7 a
A specific object is to provide a collocating cutter bit gauge of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction as well as capable of use without the requirement of special skill, for permitting ready and expeditious adjustment of the cutter bits in the desired manner.
A more specific object is to provide a gauge of the above kind which may be readily worn upon the hand for convenient use and in a manner to permit the other hand of the userto be free for effecting the adjustment of the cutter bits.
Other objects will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragment of an endless coal cutting chain, the bits of which are adapted to be adjusted by the use of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the socket carrying links of the chain shown in Figure 1 and a gauge constructed. in accordance with the present invention operatively associated with the socket and the cutter bit carried thereby, for illustrating the manner of use of the gauge in facilitating adjustment of the cutter bit; 7 i
Figure 3 is a side view of the gauge shown in Figure 2 looking toward the left of the latter figure; j 1
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the gauge as seen looking toward the, left of Figure 3; and j Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken substantially upon line 5- -5 of Figure 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates generally a fragment of a conventional endless cutter chain commonly employed in coal, mining and cutting machinery, and as shown these chains are composed of a number of links, alternate ones of which are of special form and embody integral laterallyprojecting cutter bit holders or sockets 6 within which the shanks of conventional cutter bits 7 are releasably retained in desired adjusted position by means of set screws 8. In order that, cutter chains of this kind may performwork uniformly and efficiently, it is desirable that the cutter bits project from the outer ends of the sockets 6 a predetermined and, uniform distance, and it is the purpose of the present invention, primarily, to provide an improved. form of gauge for facilitating setting of these cutter bits so that they will project for the desired distance.
The present gauge consists of a band or ring 9 adapted to be placed upon the finger of one hand next to the index finger as illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 2, and a collocating gauging device carried by said finger ring or band 9 including members 10 and 11 adapted to respectively abut the outer end of the socket 6 and the outer end of the cutter bit 7 whereby the desired adjustment of the bit 7 is effected when the latter is adjusted outwardly into engagement with the member '11. Naturally, when the bit 7 is so adjusted, the set screw 8 is tightened for securing this adjustment, whereupon the 1 next cutter bit is adjusted by the same operation.
As shown, the collooating gauge device per secomprises an elongated plate or bar constituting the member 10 and having the finger band 9 integrally formed on the lower edge thereof intermediate the ends of the same so that the bar 10 extends transversely of the band 9 and the finger in a plane at right angles to the axis of the opening in the fingerband 9 as shown in Figure 3. The contact member 11 simply consists of a right angular flange integral with one end of the In operation, the band 9 is placed upon the finger, as shown in Figure 2 and the inner free end of the contact member or bar 10 is disposed in engagement with the outer end of the bit socket 6 as shown. By forming the bar 10 of proper predetermined length as is well known in the art, the flange or contact member 11 will then be located the prescribed distance from the outer end of the socket 6 at which it is desired the cut- 7 ting end or point of the cuter bit to tenninate when properly adjusted. The set screw 8 is then loosened and the cutter bit 7 is slid outwardly of the socket 6 until the outer end or point of said cutter bit contacts the inner side or face of the contact flange 11, whereupon the set screw 8 is a ain tightened and the cutter bit is effectively secured in proper position to project at the required distance from the tool or bit socket.
From the above description it will be seen that the present device provides a means which may be employed conveniently and without the requirement of especial skill for enabling the cutter bits of a cutter chain to be easily and expeditiously adjusted, to project the required predetermined distance from the cutter bit sockets of the cutter chain, and with all of the cutter bits uni formly adjusted.
The objects and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the above description, and it is noted that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
- Vihat I claim as new is 1. A colloeating cutter bit gauge comprising a finger band, an elongated bar rigid with and extending across the band, and adapted to be placed with one end inengagement with the outer end of the cutter bit socket and a bit adjustinent-limiting contact member carried by the other end of said bar, said bar being integrally joined atone edge and intermediate its ends to one side of said finger band, said contact member embodying an integral lateral flange on said other end of the bar, and a web integrally connecting the lower edge of said flange with the adjacent side of said finger band.
2. A collocating cutter bit gauge comprising a linger band,' an elongated bar rigid with and extending across the band, and adapted to be placed wit-hone end in engages ment with the outer end of thecutter bit socket and a bit adjustment-limiting contact member carried by the other end of said bar, said bar being integrally joined at one edge and intermediate its ends to one side of said finger band, said contact member embodying an integral lateral flange on said other end of the bar, a web integrally connecting the lower edge of said flange with the adjacent side of said finger band, and the adjacent lower edge portion of said bar.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
