1,556,992 M. P. HOLMES CUTTER CHAIN Filed March 6, 1919 Patented Oct. 13, 1925 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS P. HOLMES, OF CLAREMO'NT, HAMPSHIRE, ASSIG-NOR '1O SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
cu'r'rnn 01mm.
Application filed March 6, 1919. Serial No. 281,029.
Toall whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Monnrs P. HoLMns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivanand State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter Chains, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. My invention relates to cutter chains.
It has for its object to provide an improved cutter chain, and more especially, while not limited thereto, an improved cutter chain adapted to use on a mining machine. A further object of my invention. is to provide an improved link in such a chain whereon a cutter bit or a plurality of the same may be carried inan improved manner and adjusted into a plurality of cutting positions at the same time that an exceedingly simple, positive, and rugged construction is retained. These and other objects and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration several embodiments which my invention may as-,
sume in practice.
In these draw1ngs,- Fig. 1 1s a side elevation, partlally 1n section, showing a cutter chain constructed in accordance with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View of another form of my invention, wherein a plurality of bits iscarried by a single link.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of this form of I the same.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4E.
Fig. 7 is a perspective of the adjustable locking member. Y
Fig. '8 is a perspective ofanother form of said member.
In this illustrative construction it will be observed that the cutter chain includes a plurality of sets of links 1 and 2, each set herein being pivotally connected at 3. As shown, the links 2 alternate with the links 1 and are the cutter links or cutter carrying elements, although obviously any desired arrangement or sequence of links may be used.
In my improved construction the links 2 are provided with upwardly disposed integral extensions having longitudinally disposed recesses 5 therein, these recesses here1n being shown as of cylindrical cross section. In these recesses are disposed cylindrical extensions 6 oneccentrically disposed cylindrical locking members 7. As shown, these extensions 6 are provided with threaded bores 8 adapted to receive screws 9 the shanks of which extend through suitable registering apertures 10 in the vertical wall of the member 4 so that when the heads 11 on the shanks of the screws 9 are adj usted the members 7 may be rigidly clamped to the members l. In my improved construction, it will also be observed that the members 7 are slotted transversely, as at 12, the slot, as herein, preferably extending also through the inner end of the extension 6. Attention is also directed to the fact that the inner edge of the member 4 is provided with a plurality of slots 13, which may be provided in any desired relation or number, herein three, and relatively inclined, one being disposed vertically and the others being disposed angularly on opposite sides of the same. As shown, these slots 13 are adapted to register with the slot 12 in the member 7 in different rotary positions of the latter relative to the member 4, and cooperate with the slot 12 in forming a plurality of slots adapted to receive a usual cutter bit.
14. As a result of this construction, it will be noted that, as shown in Fig. 3, the bit may be placed in any desired position of a plurality of positions, and that the same is adjustable longitudinally of the cooperating slots or freely removable therefrom when the screw. 9 is released, and clamped firmly in position when this screw is tightened. Attention is here also directed to the fact that the sides of the links 2 are cut away, as shown at 15, in such a manner as to permit free lateral movement of the inner ends of the cutter hits as the latter are adjusted angularly relative to the member 4.
In Figs. 4 to 7 of the drawings it will be noted that I have illustrated another form of the invention just described. In this-construction, it will be observed that the cutter bit carrying link 16 is provided with an elongated, upwardly extending cylindrical portion 17 transversely slotted at 18 at herein shown at 24 and 25, on the opposite ends thereof and disposed at an angle one to the other, herein at right angles, although obviously the number and the angles of the slots may be varied as desired. In this construction it will be observed that the member 20 is also slotted transversely at 26 by intersecting V-s lots, as shown in Fig. 6, in such a manner as to enable the shanks of the cutter bits to pass therethrough between oppositely disposed longitudinally extending portions 27 thereof -of V-shaped cross section. As a result of this construction, it will be observed that a plurality of bits may be used, one bit being adjustably but firmly clamped in the slot 24 and the other similarly clamped in the slot 25 as the screw 22 is adjusted in one direction,
. and both bits being released when the screw is turned in tlfe opposite direction. It will also be observed that due to the positive clamping action of the member 20, slots in the member 17 which correspond to the slots 13 may be omitted under certain circum stances if desired.-
In Fig. 8 Il ave illustrated a form of construction of ea ier the elements of a chain of the general type just described which is adapted to use with the other elements thereof to provide a wider range of adjustment. In this construction, it will be noted that the member 23 is divided transversely into two parts 28, 29, each having a serrated edge 3Q. As a result of this construction, it will be: observed that an even wider variation in adjustment may be obtained by sim ply varying the position of one of the members 28, 29 relative to the other. It will also be noted that in each position the parts are securely clamped, the serrated portions in terlocking and the clamping means being of the'same construction as described above.
By my improved construction, it will be observed that a wide variety of positions of various adjustments" make it possible to change the position of the cutter bits and thereby vary the effect of the chain, it is also possible to clamp the bits rigidly in each of their operative positions and remove the same from the chain for sharpening or the like, with great facility and whenever desired. Attention is also particularly directed to the fact that my improved construction is of an exceedingly. rugged and simple character adapted to long life in service These and other advantages of my in-- vention will, however, be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art. I
WVhile I have in this application specifically described certain specific embodiments which my invention may assume in practice, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for illustrative purposes only and that the invention may be modified to assume various forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
