Applicationled April 25, 1925. Serial No. 25,833.
My invention relates to improvements in signs, and more articularly to that class `or type which em ody a holderrnember or tablet adapted to removably receive andcarry a plurality of signpanels.`
The primary object ofthe inventionis to lprovide aV generally improved sign of the class indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction,` cheap yof manufacture and etlicient in use. y A further and important object is the provision of a sign or holder .plateprovided with vertically spaced sign panels struck therefrom and forming sign openings,`the I5 latter being of like dimensions to inter-1 changeably and reversibly receive andcarry the struck-out sign panels providedwith suitable lettering or advertising matter, suitable sign panel retaining projections being carried by the holder plate and extending into said sign openings to retain said sign panels in position.
A further and important object is theprovision of a holder plate provided `on lits marginal portions with key-hole slots adapt'- ed to receive and interlock with `suitable headed projections carried on a suitable support, such as a wall or a spider head4 on a supporting pedestal, said f key-hole f slots and headed projections being adapted to interlock with each otherin the form of a bayonet joint connection or coupling.
' `With the abovementioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in` some of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims; j
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l' is a front elevation of a sign and supporting head and pedestal, constructed and connected in ac cordance with this invention.
Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3, a top plan or edge view of the same;
Fig. 4, an enlarged fragmentaryview of` one ofthe upper. cornersof theholderplate,
' from the sign openings thereof.
Fig. 5, an enlarged vertical cross sectional form of holder plate provided with sepathe struck-out sign panels lbeing removed rately applied sign panel retaining projections, the'isign panels being removed.
Fig. 7, a vertical cross sectional view, taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 6. i
Fig. 8, a longitudinalcross sectional view ofa holder plate, embodying a further modified form and arrangementof'panelf retain- `lng projections, the dotted lines indicating another method of insertin and removing .the reversible andf intere iangeable sign panels.`
Fig. 9, a vertical cross sectional view, illustrating `a further modified form and arpangement of sign panel retaining projec- 1ons.
Similar numerals of reference designate like'par'ts throughout 'all the figures of the drawmofs. i
The improved sign comprises a sign or holder plate 1, provided with` vertically spaced sign panels 2, vstruck therefrom forming panel sign openings 1'* therein, the latter being of like dimensions tointerchangebly receive and display said sign panels 2. The sign rpanels 2 are also adapted to carry suitable signs-or lettering on either side so that they may be reversed to meet the varying demands of actual service and as indicated, for example,in Figs. l and 2of the drawings. i
As a means of providing suitable sign panel retaining projections extending vinto the sign openings to retain said sign'panels in reversible and interchangeable relation, tongue elementslgare preferably struck out from the holder plate near the marginalpor tions of the sign openings, leaving openings orrecesses 1c, therein, said tongue elements 1* being bent upwardly and downwardly to project within the panel displaying or sign openings Vand engage with the marginal edges of the sign panels at the front and rear,`as indicated.
As a lneans of quickly attaching or detaching the holder plate 1 and the sign panels 2 with :reference to a suitable support, such asa Wall or a pedestalhead, 4or the like, armed with suitable headed projections 3, such asscrews, or other fastening elements, the holder plate is preferably provided on its marginal portions withkeyhole slots ld, adapted to pass over and in: terlock with the headed' projections 3 in a well known manner. i
Asa convenient means offormin the key-hole slots 1d, and at the same time orming struck-out panel retaining projections le, the key-hole slots and projections may be formed as indicated in Figs. l to 5, elusive, of the drawings. In thisform of the invention the base of the holder plate is preferably provided along its median portion and above the sign panels 2 -and sight openings 1f" with pivoted button meinbers 4f, as indicated.
j If desired, however, the panel retaining elements or projections may be in the speciiic form of separately formed and applied members lf, as indicated, for eXample,-in
Figs` 6, Yand 8 ofthe-drawings, they panelv retaining members 1f in this iii-stance being preferablyspot welded'to the front aiid` rear portions of the holder plate and projecting into the sign openings, as shown. If desired, hook or cleat-shaped members lg,
may 'be employed, as yindicated in Fig. 9,`
and in wliich instance the off-set portions of the projections 4or members lg `are spaced above and below the marginall edges of thel Vsign openings forming guidey recesseslh to receive-'and carry enlarged sign panels 2a at the rear, as shown, and in which instance.,
they sign panels are not struckout of the original holder plate, as above described. If desired, the panel retainingprojections 1f may be formed only at the ends of the sign openings la and the' sign' panels 2 may be inserted in or, removed therefrom by bending and bowing the same as indicated bythe dotted lines in Fig. 8 in the act of inserting and removing v y j L As a, convenient means of mounting the holder plate upon or detaching the same from a support of a dierent specific ltor1n than that of a side wall of a building, or
the like, and particularly as a means-of en- .ablingthe sign panels to be more readily inserted'into or removed from the sign openings for the vpurpose of reversing such sign panels, a support in the specific form'of a spider head 5, mounted on a pedestal (i, may be provided and in which instance, the support or head 5 is spaced from the side of the holder plate, the spider arms 5 terminating in off-set members or bosses 5l internally threaded to receive the threaded elements or headed projections 3 in the form of screws, hereinbefoieV referred to.
Having thus described some of the einsign panels forming panel openings, means forreniovably receiving and retaining said sign panels in said panel openings, a spider headspaced from one side of said sign, a supporting pedestal, and a bayonet joint connection between said sign and spider head.
A holder for sign panels, comprising a holder provided with'strnck-out` sign panels forming panel receiving panel openings, .and plate retaining elements formed on the sides of saidfliolderand projecting within 4said inovably retain saidsign panels.
l. A sign, comprising a holder plate, a plurality of interchangeable sign panels struck therefrom and forming vopenings therein, and tongue elements struck from the marginal port-ions ofA said holderplate and projecting ,within said openings to retainv said plates in reversibley and vinterchangeable relation. l
5. In a sign, a holder plate provided with struck-ont sign panels .of like dimensions forming openings therein and also provided with key-holeslots in its marginal portions, and aspider headspacedat one side and having -headed retaining projections yentering-said key-hole slots, and retaining said holder plate when the latter is seated.
6. AIn a sign, a holder plate provided with spaced ,struck-ont `sign panels lof like dimensions "forming openings` therein, `means .for reversibly and interchangeably receiving land retainingsaid signy panels in said openvingsand asupporting head spaced vat one side of sa'idf'signanddetachably connected yto the latter by bayonet joints.
175 panel openings at the front and rear to re- A sign, comprising a holderplate provided-with spaced sign panels struck'theiefrom forming openings, thelattei" beingl of like dimensions to interchangeably a-nd reversibly receive and carry said' sign panels, sign'panel retaining projections struck from said holder plate and struck-out tongues forming key-hole slots in the marginal poi'- ti'ons of said holder plate and exteiuiing into sonie of said sign openings.
8. A sign, comprising a holder plate provided with vertically spaced sign panels struck therefrom and forming. openings therein, the latter being of like dimensions to interchangeably receive said sign panels, sign panel retaining projections carried by IUS said holderplate andextending into said openings to retain said sign panels in position, a support having headed holder projections and key-liole slots in the marginal portions of said holder plateA to removably receive and interlock with said headed holder projections of said support. Y
In testimony whereof Irliave affixed my signature.
