My present invention relates generally to a cutting apparatus and more part cu- Er y to a paper cutting mechanism in connection with newspaper printing p along with mechanism adapting the cut sheets to be collected and stacked at full press speed. More especially my present nvention forms a part of an associating delivering mechanism included in an applilo cation filed of even date herewith.
' Among the objects of my present nvention, themost important is the provision of a cutting mechanism which is readily adjustable and will 'eificiently operate to cut II a mov' web'along lines at right angles to its si e edges irrespective of the particular speed of themoving web.
With these andother objects in mind my invention will be more plainly understood an by reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention and form a part of this specification, and in which:

Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof, 30 Figure 4 is a detail side view of the cutter cylinder removed, and Figure 5 is a similar view of the cutter bar with its stationary blade, Referring now to these figures and par 5 ticularly to Figure 1, there is shown a print- .er web fed, as in practice, through pan! of pulling through rollers 11 to and across the knife bar 12 of the web cutting mechanism which forms the subject matter. of the {0 present application and which is also mcIuded in an application'for associating and delivery apparatus filed of even date herewith, Serial No. 756,115.
I have also shown in Figure 1 portions 6 13 of a newspaper printing press from which the printer web 10 in racticeugroceeds, those portions illustrated mg s cient to show the connection of the driving shaft 14 of the cutting mechanism with the printing The knife bar 12 is a rigid part ofthe knife carria 15 whose sides are adjustably moon on the sides of a supporting frame 1 6.' The carriage 15 has at one side a lower extension 17 through which the upper portion of a vertical shaft 18 is journalled, said shaft forming a pivot upon which the entire knife carriage is horizontally swingable to a more or less inclined angle with respect to the line of the moving web 10. For such horizontally swingable adjustment, the knife carriage has at its opposite sides arcuate openings 19 thro h which guide pins 20 upstand from the si es of the supporting frame 16, the openings having a common center oonceiitric with the shaft 18. On the sides of the supporting frame 16, adjusting screws 21 provide for ready quick adjustment of the knife car.- riage which becomes necessary whenever for any reason the speed of movement of the web 10 is changed. i
The shaft 18 is connected at its lower. end by bevel gears 22 with the drive shaft 14 extending from the printing press, and
' is connected at its upper end by bevel gears 23 with a crossshaft 24, the latter having spur gears 25 in engagement with similar,
though larger gears 26 on the main cutter shaft 27 in the carriage 15. Upon this main shaft the cutter cylinder 28 is secured, having a knife bar 29 to which a blade 30 is attached, and also having in its length a plurality of discs 31 whose function is to engage the web moving across the knife bar 12 and guide and hold the web down so that when severed, the sheets will fall upon conveyor tapes 32 by which the severed sheets are carried away from the cutting mechanism.
It will be observed that in action the blade 30 of the rotating knife bar 29 operates downwardly against the blade 33 of the stationary knife bar 12 and it will also be observed that, upstanding as it does, the stationary knife blade 33 presents its thin edge to the moving blade and being adjustably connected to the knife bar 12 as by means of clamping screws and the like 34, this blade may be readily and effectively adjusted to insure clean uniform cutting of the web whereby to avoid frequent sharpening and shut downs for this purpose.
It will also be noted that, between the printin press 13 and the cutting mechanism, t e feed of the paper web to such mechanism is controlled by a compensatin roller 35'which is adjustable toward an away from the cutting mechanism and which thus controls the points of cutting ofthe web in the cutting mechanism so that. v the latter will accurately act between the eluding rotary and stationary knives, a supframe with respect to t portin frame, a frame carrying said knives and a justable angularlfi on said supporting of the web, rollers for feeding a web into said knife frame, and a roller around which the web extends, said latter roller bein adjustable toward and away from the ife frame for the purpose described.

In a mechanlsm'of the character described having a supporting frame, a moving web cutting device including stationary and rotary knives, a cutter frame extending across said first named frame and through which the web passes between said knives, connections supporting said cutter frame on said first named frame permittin adjustment of the former angularly with respect to the line of movement of the web, and means for feeding a web to the cutter frame, includin means to control the point of cutting of t e web, as described.
3. In a mechanism of the character described having a frame, a moving web cutting device including stationary and rotary knives, a cutter frame extending across said first named frame andthrough which the web passes between said knives, and connections supporting said cutter frame on said first named frame permitting adjustment of the former angularly with respect to the line of movement of the web, said cutter frame having an extension at one side, and a shaft journaled vertically through said extension forming the pivot of adjusting movement of the cutter frame and operatively connected tothe rotary knife as described.

In a mechanism of the character described having a supporting frame and a drive shaft in said frame, a device for cutting a moving web including a frame through which the web passes, adjustably disposed across the supportin frame and having an extension at one si e, a vertical shaft geared to said drive shaft and journaled through said extension and forming the pivot of adjusting movement of the cutter frame, and rotary and stationary cutters mounted in the cutter frame of which the former isoperatively connected to the said vertical pivot shaft.

In mechanism of the character described, a cutting mechanism for a movin web, a supportin frame in which the we moves, a frame or the cutting mechanism e line of movement adjustable on the supporting frame angularly with respect to t 1e moving web, said cuttingb mechanism includin a stationary cutter ar over which the we passes, a cuttin cylinder having a cutting blade, and a bla e adjustably connected in upright position in sald stationar bar w1th' its thin edge toward the cutting cylinder for co-' operation with the blade thereof.

In a mechanism of the' character described having a supporting frame and a drive shaft in said frame, a device for cutting a moving web includin a frame through WhlCh the web passes, ad ustably disposed across the supporting frame and having an extension at one side, a vertical shaft geared T to said drive shaft and journaled through said extension and forming the pivot of adustm'g movement of the cutter frame, and rotary and stationary cuttersymounted in the cutter frame of which the former is operatively connected to the said verticalshaft, said rotary cutter including a cylinder in the cutter frame, and a lurality of s aced apart web-engaging guidg discs in sai cylinder as described;

In a mechanism of the character described having a supporting frame and a drive shaft in said frame, a device for cutting a moving web including a frame through which the web passes, adjustably disposed across the supporting frame and having an extension at one side, a vertical shaft geared to said drive shaft and journaled through said extension and forming the pivot of adjustin movement of the cutter frame, and mova 1e and stationary cutters mounted in the cutter frame of which the former is operatively connected to the said vertical pivot shaft.
