The invention relates to padlocks of the sliding shackle type and it aims to provide a generally improved and simpliiied lock of this character in which novel provision is made for limiting the outward sliding of. the shackle, the stop means being placed in position from the interior of the lock body duri ing assemblage, whereas ordinarily, a rivet for this purpose passed through a specially drilled opening in said body. l
Vith the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel sub]l ect matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompany# ing drawing Figs. 1 and 2 are vertical sectional views partly in elevation illustrating the lock respectively in locked and released positions.

Figs.` 5 and 6 are fragmentary sectional views partly in elevation, illustrating the f" preferred manner of securing the plate which carries the shackle stop.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 7 designates an appropriate body formed of any desired metal. This body is provided with relatively long and short longitudinal bores 8 and 9 to receive the ends 10 and 11 of a shackle 12, said ends having notches 13 and 141 tor (fo-action with bolts, yet to be described.
A cylinder-containing recess 15 is formed in the body 7 and opens through one end thereof, a transverse, bolt-receiving recess 16 is formed in said body between the other end ot the latter and the recess 15, a longitudinal opening 17 leads from one recess Uto the other, and a transverse opening 18 leads from the inner end of the recess 15, to the bore 8. 19 designates two slidable bolts in the recess 16, urged outwardly by springs 20 'for co-action with the notches 13 and 14:
path of the stop 23 to limit the projection of the shackle 12, under the influence of the ordinary spring 26. The stop 25 is carried by a plate 27, which plate is Within the inner end portion of the cylinderaeceiving recess 15. The inner end Wall of this recess is counter-recessed at 28 and a portion ot' the side wall of said recess is grooved as at 29, for the reception ol the plate 27. The side Wall of the counter-recess 28 is undercut as shown at 30 and the edge of the plate 27 is beveled `as at 31. The plate is inserted into position by passing it into the recess 15 and angling it so that `it may be inserted into the groove 29 and the stop 2 5 passed through the opening 18. Then, by means of a punch or the like P (Fig. 6), the plate may be mushroorned into tight contact with the undercut Wall 30.
The plate 27 is formed with `an opening 82 registering with the opening 17 and` having a stepped side wall providing an upwardly facing shoulder. A cylindrical releasing member 34C for the bolts 19, is rotatably received in` the opening 17 and rests upon the shoulder 33 of the plate 27, to be rotatably supported by the latter, said ineinber 34 having upstanding studs 35 operatively related with appropriate shoulders on the bolts 19, for the purpose of releasing them When said member is turned in the proper direction.
A lock cylinder 36 is secured in the recess 15 by an appropriate screw B7. This screw passes through a suitable bore at the lower end of the bore 9 and after insertion, may have its head locked by use ot a punch.
A rotatable barrel 88, is disposed in the cylinder 36 and is controlled in the usual Way by key and tumblers. The upper end of this barrel projects troni the cylinder i6 and is received in the lower portion et the opening 32, and said projecting end is connected with the member 34. To establish this connection, I preferably provide the `barrel with a ridge 39 received in a groove 40 in the member 341.
By providing the novel` construction shown and described, or a substantial'equivalent thereof, a lock is provided which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured, unusual speed being permitted when assent bling. Moreover, the lock Will be advantageous and exceptionally durable, and its construction is such that itV cannot be released by striking any part of the body with a hammer or the like. To open the lock, the proper key must be inserted into the barrel 38 and the latter turned to Withdraw the bolts 19. Then, the spring 26 expands and outwardly slides the shackle 12. rl-"his outward sliding is limited by the co-acting stops Z3-25 Which come in Contact with each other When the shackle is at its ei;- treme outward position. At that time, `the stop Q5 is opposite the groove 9A, so that the shackle l2 maybe turned to any desired position.
As excellent results areobtainablc from the ydetails disclosed, they are preferably followed. However, Within the scope ofthe invention as claimed, variations may be made.
I claim.:
l. In a lock, a shackle, a body having a bore slidably receiving one lend .of said shackle, said body being provided with a recess to receive lock parts and with an opening from said recess to said'liore, and a plate mounted in said recess and having a shackle stop projecting; through said opening into said bore, said end of the shackle having a stop co-operable `with the `first named stop to limitthe outward movement of the shackle.
2. A ylock comprising a body `having` a longitudinal bore, a Yoylinder-receiving` rccess spaced fronr said bore and opening through one end of the body, .a transverse bolt-receivingrecess between the other end of the body and the cylinder-receiving recess and communicating With said bore, a
aplate in the inner end of the cylinder-re ceiving bore having a` shackle stop project- Ving through the aforesaid transverse opening into the outward path of the first named stop, said plate having an opening registering Vwwith the aforesaid longitudinal opening, a lock cylindersecuredin the aforesaid Cylinder-receiving recess,and rotatableboltreleasing means extending from vthe cylinder through the registering openings-ofthe body and plate and operatively connected with the above named bolt.
3. A structure as specilied in claim 2;`the inner end Wall of said cylinder-receiving recess being formed With a counter-recess in which said plate is received, said counter-recess having an undercut sidewall and thc plate being formed with afbeveled edge engaged by said undercut side Wall.
4. A structure as specified in claim l; the inner end Wall of said recess being formed with va counter-recess having an undercut side 'Wa-ll and the plate being formed With a ybeveled 4edge engaged by said 'undercut side Wall.
5. A structure as specified in elaim'9.;-said rotatable bolt-releasing` means embodying a section rotatably supported by said plate.
