CAR SEAL.
' Application filed February "T his invention relates to car; seals. "Objects of this invention are to provide a seal for cars whichis so constructed that it maybe readily vfastened in position to seal the car, and which maynot bejthereaitter opened without breaking the parts of the seal in a conspicuousmanner.
Further'objects are to provide aseal in which a main member provided with an integral strap cooperates with an auxiliary member in such a manner that the initially free end of the strap is interlocked with the auxiliary member in a very secure manner, and that its lnterlockmg 1s relnforced by the inherent character1st1cs of the device.
- Embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 isja vlew of the main member and the integral strap pro ectmg therefrom.
Figure 2 is a view of the reverse side from that shown in Figure 1. a
Figure 2 is a view showing the'iree end of the strap in engagement with the auxiliary member with the main member removed. f

Figure 6 is an enlargedxsectional view on the line 66 of Figure 4..
Figure 7 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 77 ofFigureA.

Figure '9 is a sectional view showing the form illustrated in Figure 8, with the free end of the strap being inserted into the seal. Figure 10 is a view corresponding to Fig ure 9 showing the completion of the interlocking or sealing operation.
Figure 11 is a view corresponding to Fig ure 8 showing a modified form of construction.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a main member 1 is provided with an integral outwardly projecting strap 2. This main member 1 is preferably elliptical, although it may be made in other shapes,-for instance, circular or polygonal. The main member 1 is provided with a depressed channel 3 and with a marginal upwardly extending flange 4. This flange is cut away at the a modified'iorm' member, and. prevents it 5,1926. Serial nofaaaoa,
point where'the strap 2 joinszthe body portion 1 and is also cut away as indicated at 5 on the opposite side thereof;- f
I The mainmember 1, as may beseen from Figure 2,-is provided -with a .pair, of projecting ribs"? arranged -inspaced relation between which a tongue 8 is inwardly folded.
It is to be noted. from reference to Figures V land that a small projection vformed-by depressing a portion of, the main member,
.is provided adjacent the tongue; This ,de-.
pressionv is indicated by the reference character.9 and prevents thetongue. 8 from being fiattened against the body of the main m'em er.. 1 The integral strap 2, which projects from the main member, is provided with-an enlargement, suchqas the disc-like portion 10 adjacent its freeend. It is further provided wlth a slot or; aperture 11- beyond the enlargement 10. 4 The auxiliary member comprises a body portion 12, as most .clearlyshown in Fig ure 5, which-is alsoequippedwith an upand "is preferably provided with a pair of outwardly projecting ears 17,. Itis' to ,be
noted that this tongue 16 is-n'arr'owerthan the tongue 8 and alsothan the strap 2. This auxiliary 'm ember is provided with a'projecting'portion 18 c0rresponding;to-the portion 9 of the main member, andsuchpro-.
jecting';portionfholds the tongue 1'6 spaced from thebody portion 120i the auxiliary againstsuchniemberq 1 5 .In'the device as itappearsw'hen' completed the auxiliary member and the main memberflare beaded together as" described;
In using this device the .free end of the strap 2 is inserted between the members and pushed forwardly until the notch" 11 wardly. extending. marginal flange 13 and passes the tongue 16. Thereafter it is drawn outwardly thus causing the interlocking of the aperture 1 1. Further, these cars must 16 must also be broken, or else the strap 6 must be severed. In addition to this, .the
enlargement. 10 being positioned on the I 'ure 11 is identical with that illustrated in v Figure 8 except that the main member 19 outerside of the sealed members prevents 1 reinsertion of the strap 2 incase it isbroken.
The main member .19 has a strap 22 project- Referring to Figures 8, 9, and 10, it will be seen that the seal comprises a main member' 19 which is integrally joined by means of a tongue 20 to an auxiliary member 21.
ing therefrom. Tliis strap corresponds 'to the strap 2 of the first form and is provided with an enlargement 23 and with a notch 24.
The auxiliary member 21 is provided with an inwardly turned portion 25 which is itself equipped with an upwardly struck tongue 26 and with an inwardly folded terminal flange or member 27 positioned below the point ofthe tongue.
Themain member 19 is provided with a recess 28 adapted to accommodate the tongue 26 and witha depressed rib29 which fits back of the flange 27 as shown in Figures 9 and 10.
The members are beaded together asshown in Figures 9 and 10 in a manner similar to that previously described. 7 i In using this form of device, the free end ofthe strap is'passed inwardly betweenthe members asshown in Figure 9. The strap is pushed inwardly until the notch 24' is en gaged by the tongue 26. s I It is to be noted that the depressed portion 29 guides the end of the strap downwardly and. facilitates engagement with the tongue '26. Thereafter the strap is pulled forwardlya slight distancethusplacing the parts in-the position shown in Figure 10.
"of the strap is securely engaged and cannot be removed without breaking the parts.
parts are in the position shown in Figure cannot be disengaged from the tongue.
Consequently the device cannot be opened up without breaking the seal.
The form of invention illustrated in Figand the auxiliary 21 are formed in separate pieces. cal with that described above. It will be seen that a very simple seal has been provided, which is highly effective in operation, which may be cheaply manufactured, and which may be readily applied.
Although the invention has-been described in considerable detail, such. description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed. 7
I claim: 7 a
A car seal comprising-a hollow disc-like member having a strap extending therefrom and having a marginal'flangeprovided with 10, it is apparent that the strap will pass beneath the inwardly turned member 27 and Otherwise the invention is. identiextending downwardly rearwardly of said prong to provide a guiding cam surface for guiding said strap into engagement with said prong, said strap after engaging said prong having its extreme free end located below said shield. Itw1ll be seen that the init ally free end In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee andState of Wisconsin.
