This invention relates to corn poppers and particularly to that class of poppers used on the top of a stove and operated by a handle. I

In the use of corn poppers of the type usually used in homes, great difficulty is experienced in removing the popped corn and replacing it with unpopped corn without burning the hands. In addition to this, the

means for fastening the side of the cover in place on the body of the popper, frequently comes loose during the popping operation, with the result that much of the popped corn is lost or burned on the stove. These diiiiculties arise from the usual construction wherein it is necessary to place the hand in contact with some hot portion of the popper in order to release the contents after the popping operation has been completed.

In the present invention I have en dea-vored to produce a corn popper for ordinary home use which will obviate the above mentioned difficulties.

Accordingly, the primary object of my in vention is the provision of an improved corn popper which; (1) may be opened and emptied without touching with the hand any hot portion of the popper; (2) may be filled and closed without touching with the hand any hot portion of the popper; (3) will have its handle securely attached to the popper; (4) may be opened or closed by engaging a portion of the popper with the stove, table or similar object; (5) will be cheap to manufacture and have fewparts and will not easily get out of order.

Referring to its drawing wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the popper, the handle being broken away, the cover being open.

At the top of the body portion, I provide an edge which acts as a guide for a purpose to be described. To the cover I have securely attached as by welding or soldering, the rod 14 to which the handle 15 is secured. It is to be understood that' the handle 15 is of sufficient length to remove the person holding the corn popper, a'pro'per distance from the stove.

In order to limit the movement of the cover 12 relative to the body portion 10, I have provided stop means for cooperating engagement, to prevent the movement of the cover beyond points in either direction.

To prevent the movement of the cover 12 too far to the left as seen in Fig. ,1, I have provided the cover 12 with a turned down portion 16 which engages the rolled portion of the strip 11,'when the cover is in closed position. The turned down portion 16 does not,however, interfere, in any way, with the opening or closing of the cover 12.

In order to limit the movement of the cover in an opening direction, and to reduce the number of necessary parts, I have turned inwardly the end 17 of the rod 14. This end 17 passes through a suitable opening in the cover. The turned down end 17 of the rod 14 is of sufficient length to engage the edge of the rolled portion of the strip 11 when the cover is opened to the fullest extent.

When the cover is put on or off of the body portion, the cover is-sprung up so that the end will clear the edge of the rolled portion. I In the operation of my invention, the corn'is first dropped into the body "portion of the popper. The popper, held by the handle 15 is placed with the body portion 10 against a piece of furniture as a table or stove as at the side F. A slight pressure on the handle 15 will cause the body portion to be held and thecover 12, to which the handle is attached by the rod 1-1, will move over the body portion to close the same. The turned down portion 16 of the cover will prevent the cover from moving too far.

After the popping operation is complete, and it is desired to empty the popper, it is only necessary to engage the portion B of the popper with any suitable piece of furniture as the edge of a table or stove and pull on-the handle. The body portion 10 will be held while the cover will be caused to move, thus opening the popper to permit emptying of the same. The turned down end 17 ot' the rod 14 by engaging the edge of the binding 11, will prevent too great a movement of the cover.

It will be observed that the position of maximum opening of the cover Will be determined by the position of the turned down end 17. i

While Ihave shown and described in detail a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that this is merely illustrative and that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;- i i 1. A corn popper comprising a body member and a cover therefor, the body member and cover being secured together but movable relatively to each other, a supporting and popper operating handle rigidly secured to and extending from the cover and of sufficient length to have its outer end cool while the popper is in use. v

2. A corn popper comprising acover member, a. body member secured thereto and slidabiy supported thereby and a supporting and popper operating handle secured directly to the cover member to support the cover and body member, said handle extending sufliciently from the cover to have its outer end cool when the popper is in use.

A corn popper comprising a flat cover member, a body member secured thereto and having a movement in a. plane parallel to the plane of the cover, a supporting and popper operating handle secured directly and body member, said handle extending suflieiently from the cover to have itsouter end (3001 whenthe popper is in use.
