The present invention relates to improve nlcnts idiutcrnal combustion engines and consists in providing improved,mechanism for converting the reciprocating movement of the engine piston into a rotary movement.
The invention is herewith fully described an-dclaimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation view partly in sect-ion,illustrating the invention applied to a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine of the four-cycletype. r f

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring'to the drawings, 1 is the base upon which are mounted the cylinders 2 in which the pistons 3 are mounted, and 4 is a line shaft suitably journalled in the bearings 5 provided in the walls of the base 1. In each of said cylinders 2 is provided a guideway 6 which extends into the base 1. In each of said guideways 6 are movably mounted the slidable rigid members 7 which are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the wrist-pins 8 journalled in suitable hearings in the piston 3. At their lower ends, said slidable members each have an outwardly projecting'portion 9 to which is secured one end of the steel cable 10, said cable passing in suitable helical channels or grooves 11in the pulley 12 which is loosely mounted on said shaft 4 and at its other end the said cable is secured to the pin 13 provided at the upper end of the slidable member 7 It will readily be seen that upon downward movement of the piston 3, the slidable member 7 will be likewise moved downwardly in the guidewa-ys 6, thus pulling the cable and rotating the pulley 12..
Each pulley 12 has a collar 13 upon which is mounted the disk 14, and 15 is a circumferential. shoulder on said pulley bearing a plurality of lugs 16 to which are pivotally connected the links 17 which are connected at their other ends to the actuating levers 18. Each of the said levers 18 consists of a right angular bar pivoted at 19 to the disk 14, each of said bars having a recess 20 which engages or grips the flange 21 provided on the outer periphery of the disk 22, which is fixedly mounted on the main shaft 4. upon which are movably mounted pitmen which project through suitable ;op enings"24 in the base -1 and are excentri- 'callyconnected at their other ends to the two cranksor flywheels 25. and 25, which are mounted on the shaft 26 journalled in of the pulley suitable bearings 27. The rotation of cranks 25 serves to retractthe pistons 3 in the exhaust and compression strokes and to draw the pistons downwardly in the intake stroke.
On said shaft 26 is mounted the pinion 28 co-acting with the intermediate gear 29, and gear 30 mounted on shaft 21, upon which are also mounted the cams 32 stems 33 of thevalves 34 that control the inlet and outlet ports 35, said valve stems 33 being provided with the usual spiral springs 36 which normally press'said valves against their respective seats. The cable 10 may be adjustably secured at 37 to the extension 9 and should preferably be securedto thepul-r ley 12 by any suitable means 38. I
In the operation of the mechanism above described, the piston 3 in its power stroke carries with it the slidable member 7 upon which is secured the cable 10. The cable 10 engaging the pulley 12 will give said pulley an oscillating movement. The pulley actuates the disk 14 carrying the levers 18 which alternately grip and release the flange 21 of the disk 22, and thus converts this reciprocating movement of the pistons into a rotary movement of the disc 22, and the disk 22 being fixed to the shaft 4 will impart to said shaft a similar continuous rotary movement. r a
