Application filed December 8, 1926. Serial No. 153,286.
This invention relates to devices used for binding leaves removably in form of books. One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device which may serve as 'a loose-leaf binder as well as for more permanently binding and holding leaves.
Another object is to provide a leaf-holding member with a shaft-like portion around the axis of which the member may swing, and embodying a leaf supporting portion with a hook-like termination facing in a direction parallel to the axis of the shaft portion. i
Another object is to provide abase plate for supporting the shaft portion of the leaf holding member, and having an aperture for engaging the hook terminationof the leaf holder.
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended-claims as well as from the accompanying drawing,,in
which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a base plate with one leaf holder in an opened position, and'anotherleaf holder in a closed and locked position.
Fig. 2 is a portion of the baseplate as seen from the underside, illustrating the engagement of the shaft portion of the leafholding member crimped in by a portion of the folded edge of the base plate.
Fig. 8 is a perspective illustration of a leaf-holding member of which the leaf-hold ing-portion is slightly'bent for supporting purposes, adapted to serve as a loose-leaf holder as well as for comparatively permanent binding purposes.
Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the base plate on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an end-elevation of a loose-leaf holding member of the semi-circular type commonly used for loose-leaf holding adapted to allow a quick exchanging and placing of loose leaves. v
Fig. 6 is an end-elevation of a leaf supporting member of the type preferable for more permanently holding leaves in a binder or book-back.
The base plate 7 in this case is illustrated of a simple form with the edges folded in, as indicated at 8 in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. Certain portions of the folded-in edges 8 are cut in, as indicated at 9, to be bent around the shaft portion 10 of leaf supporting members, as indicated at 11 in Fig. 2.
the shaft 10 within Any number of aper or leaf-holding, or supporting membe s may be used in this manner in any folder or book-back, though two holders are only indicated in Fig. 1; and,
though the two members in Fig. 1 are indicated as made in oppositely disposed forms, as indicated at 10 and 10 in relation to the paper-holding portions 12 and 12 it must be understood that the holders may be projectlng from the same side of the supporting shaft in the-several holders in one and the same binder.
The shaft portion 10 ofv any holder is then turnably mounted and disposed j in the rolled-in portion 11 below the base plate 17,
the base plate.
while the holding portion 12 extends above The termination '13of'the' holding por tion is provided with a notched end 14, projecting in a direction parallel to the axis pz f the shaft 10, as clearly illustrated in The baseplate is provided With an aperture 15 for each of the holders used in the base plate. 7
The aperture 15 is either offset in relation to the aperture 16 on the opposite side on the ase plate by which the holding portion extends through the base plate from the shaft portion below the base plate; or the holding portion 12 is projecting in an angle slightly more or less than square to the axis of the shaft, so that the hook portion 14 may be caused to spring or snap into the aperture 15 for engagement between the leaf holder and the base plate; the aperture 16 being, of course, large enough so that the upward extending portion may swing freely around i the baseplate; and the aperture 15 being large enough so that the hook-end of the holder may freely pass in andout to be engaged or disengaged in relation to the base plate.
For general use as a loose-leaf binder, theholding portion is preferably of the semicircular form, as illustrated in Fig. 5, allowing a quick folding of leaves from one back to the other back in a customary manner of handling leaves in loose-leaf binders.
For more permanently holding leaves, or pamphlets, or matter already bound in paper covers, or in a similarmanner within a cover of better type or make, the form 12 illustrated in Fig. 6 is preferable, by which several paper bound books may bepermanently form of Fig. 6.
held in a binder, as roughly indicated at 17. The partly rectangular and slightly curved holder 12,, illustrated in Fig. 3, may serve as a l0ose-leaf binder as Well as for holding pamphlets, or the like in the manner setforth above with reference to the modified Having thus described my invention, I claim: a a
1. In a binder of the type described, a leaf supporting member having a shaft-like portion around the axis of which thelnember mayswing. and having alcaf supporting portion projecting at approximately right angles a hooklike portion, with a hook facing in a direction parallel to the axis of the" shaft with springing capacity in this direction.
,2. In a binder 0f the type described, a leaf supporting member having a shaft-like portion around the axis of which the inem ber may swing and having a leaf supporting portion projecting at approximately right angles from the shaft portion terminating in a llOOli llkB portion w th a hook facing in a direction parallel to the axis of the sha-ft with springing capacity in this direction,
and a base plate having means for turnably supporting said shaft portion and having other means for engaging said hook portion. 3; Ina binder of the type described, a leaf supporting member having a shaft-like porfrom the shaft portion terminating in portion projecting at approximately right angles from the shaft port on terminating n a hook-like portion with a hook facing in a direction parallel to the axis of the shaft 7 with springing capacity in this direction, and a base plate having its longitudinal edges rolled in on its underside, portions of which being formed to turnably support the said shaft portion, the base plate having apertures for engaging said. hook-portions.
4. In a binder of the type described, a leaf supporting member having a shaft-like portion around the axis of which the member may swing and having a leaf supporting portion projecting at approximately right angles from the shaft portion terminatingtin a hook-like portion. with a hook facing ina direction parallel to theaXis of the shaft with springing capacity in this direction, and a base plate having itslngitndinal edges rolled in on itsunderside, portions of said rolled-in edges being out in and rolled for turn-ably engaging said shaft portions,
the base plate having an aperture for thcsaid hook portion on the opposite side in relation to said shaft supporting portion. a v
In testimony-that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
