ASg'ZG-NQBS T VTADSVJ WAT-LC A CORPORATION OF KENTUCKY.
CONANT, OF FOR-T THOMAS, KENTUCKY, 11 CASE CUMPANY, IL-f 'lITU-CEZY,
DUSTPROOF GROVIN AND PENDANT.
Application filed March 12, 1925.
Our invention relates to the construction of watchcase pendants and crowns in such a manner as to exclude dust and dirt and like foreign matter from the interior of the watchcase.
Our object is to provide a dust prooi crown and pendant that are simple, compact and economical in construction, neat in appearance, efficient in operation and durable in use.
Our invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts and in the novel features, as set forth and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary central vertical section of a watchcase movement ring, back, bezel, pendant and crown with the stem shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on a plane corresponding to line 22 of Fig. 1 with the stem shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stem and crown partly in section and partly in elevation;
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the tube partly broken away; and
Fig. 5 is a central vertical section of the pendant.
In the embodiment of our invention, as illustrated, and which shows a preferred construction, we provide apendant 1 with an annular tapering recess 2 in its top and with a central stepped bore 3 through the center thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
This results in forming collar 1 between the recess 2 and bore 3, and shoulders or steps 5 and 6 in the inner end of bore 3. Tube 7 having inwardly tapering inner end 8 is forced into frictional engagement with the inner end of bore 8 and seated on steps 6, thereby forming annular channel or pocket 9.
Crown 10 is provided with annular boss 11 through which a threaded socket 12 extends into the crown to form a substantial bearing for the winding stem 13, the threaded end of which is screwed into said socket.
The crown is provided with an integrally formed tubular collar 14 and an annular depending tapering skirt 15 spaced apart from said collar to form an annular cavity 16 therebet-ween.
The parts when assembled occupy the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 from which it Serial No. 14,946.
is seen that tubular collar 14 and tapering skirt 15 flank pendant collar i and extend into annular channel or pocket 9 and tapering recess 2, respectively, with the crown resting upon the outer end oi pendant collar 4., thereby forming an extended irregular or tortuous joint between the pendant and crown to eilectually prevent the passage of dirt, dust and the like from the exterior to the interior of the watchcase between the crown and pendant. In other words, the construction is such that the inwardly projecting parts of the crown extend and iit into the corresponding cavities in the iendant, while at the time the outwardly projecting parts of the )endant extend and fit into the corresponding cavities in the crown whereby the projecting parts intermesh and flank each other to form joint which extends first inwardly, then outwardly, then transversely, then inwardly, then transversely, and then outwardly.
After the crown 10 has been placed in position on the pendant the winding stem 13 is inserted through the movement ring 17 and screwed into position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby it is suitably mounted and the parts are thus securely held together.
If desired, a suitable packing may be interposed in the tortuous joint formed between the tube, crown and pendant, respectively, but it is believed that the construction, as above described, will adequately exclude foreign substances without the use of such packing.
lVhile we have set forth a particular construction, of our invention, it is understood that it is capable oi modification without departure from its scope or spirit as defined in the claim.
'We claim:
In combination, a movement ring, a pendant fiXed thereon and having a central bore pr vided with tapered steps adjacent its inner end and an integral collar surrounding said bore adjacent its outer end, an annular tapering recess surrounding said collar and formed by the vertical wall of said collar and a tapering wall converging therewith at its inner extremity, a detachable smooth tube having a tapered inner end adapted to be tightly wedged into the inner end or" said tapered bore whereby an annular channel or pocket is formed therearound, an intermeshing crown having an annular depending tapering skirt with its inner wall vertical and its outer wall beveled and converging thereto at its inner extremity whereby said skirt is adapted to form a close fit With the walls of said annular tapering cavity, and having an integral ln'wardly formed tubular collar spaced apart from said skirt and adapted to closely lit within said annularchannel or pocket between. the Walls of said pendant, 10
collar and tube, a Winding stem and means for securing said Winding stem to the crown, substantially as set 'forth and for the purposes specified.
