EL -Brooms DEVICE.
Application filed M archl9, 1926. S erialNo. 96,029.
This invention relates to improvements in oil well rigging and the like, the general object, of the invention being to provide a cable drum, with means for operating it from the power plant of the rigging and which carriesa cable which may be used for bailing the well and for other purposes, thus rendering it unnecessaryto remove the drill- 111 llne from the blocks and its drum in.
order to substitute the bailing line when bailing is necessary.
Another ob'ect of This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement 'of the several parts; to behereinafter fully described; illustrated in theaccompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a rigging .for drilling a well, showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation of a standard rigging showing the invention in use. thereon. 1 L
Figure l is a section on line 4 -4 of Figure 2.

ranged that lubricant will pass from the perating' e r,
- As is Well known when it is desired. to bail a well being drllled, the drilling line must be unstrung' from the crown and traveling blocks and taken off the drum Or reel sothat the bailing line can be placed on the drum or reel and carried up to the top of the tower and placed over a. sheave at said top and then brought down and attached to the'bailing device. This requires considerable time and much labor. It is the object of my invention to eliminate this loss of time and'labor by providing an auxiliary drum which carries acabl'e which must be used for bailing" Onothe'r purposes, with means whereby the drumv can be operated from either the power plant of the drilling rigging or from .the band wheel of the standard rigging... This cable can'beveasily and quicklyattached to the bailing orother device without removing the drilling cable so that the change from drilling or pumping to bailing and vice versa, can be made very quickly and with the expenditure of but little labor. 7 i
. In the drawings, l'indieates a supporting frame and2 indicates a hollow shaft which is fastened to the end pieces of the frame by the U bolts 3. Acap 4 closes one end of the shaft and its other end isformed with'a verticalelbow 5 which-is closed by a screw cap 6 having a hole therein which is .closed by a plug? so that lubricant can be placed in the shaft which'acts as a reservoir for the same. The shaft may be provided with a drain cock 8 and it has holes 9 therein through which the lubricant can pass to the parts to be lubricated. The reel or drum is shown at 10 and is rotatably mounted on the shaft and roller bearings 11 are'placed between the drum and shaft to prevent friction. A. bushing 12 is placed in the drum to engage the roller bearings and this bushing can be removed and substituted by a new onewhen it'becomes worn. A steel Washer 13 and'a ,felt or other washer 13 is placed in each end of the drum to prevent escape of One of the holes 9 is so arreservoir to the roller bearings and thus lubrieate the same. Thewashersat one end of the drumare held in place bythe cap 14 which is bolted to the end-of the drum and a 18 at its edges to receive the brake band 19 and it is also provided with a hub 16 which is provided with clutch teeth 17. 'The flange of the cap is provided with the annular ribs so that the drum can be braked when desired.
The band has its ends connected with themember 20 which has its other end connected with the brake lever 21 which is fastened to a part of the rigging. By shifting this lever, the member 20 will be moved longitudinally to apply the brake.
A pulley 22 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 2 and has the grooves 23 therein and a sprocket 24; is formed with the pulley. An
extension 25 is formed on the-hub of the pulley on which is slidably mounte-dthe clutch part 26 which hasa key 27 thereon engaging a slot 28 in the extension. When this elutch part is moved into engagement with the teeth 17 of the hub 16 of the drum, the pulley will be connected with the drum so that they will rotate in unison. The part 26 is provided with an annular groove to receive the two part collar 29 which has its projections 30 engaging the holes in the limbs 31 of the yoke 32. 'This yoke is pivotally supported from the frame 1 by means ofthe shaft 33 engaging holes in the extremities of the limbs 31 and the opposite end of the yoke has an opening 34 therein which is engaged by an arm 36 on the rock shaft 37 which has its inner end held in a bearing 38. on the frame by a pin 39 and its other end is held in a bearing 40 on a part of the derrick floor, this end having a handle 4-1 attached thereto.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that by rocking the shaft37 by means of its handle 41, the clutch part 26 will be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth on the hub 16 of the reel or drum so as to I connect the drum with the pulley 22 or disconnect'the drum from said pulley. After the drum has been disconnected from the pulley, the brake may be applied to hold the drum stationary by manipulating the lever 21.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the frame 1 is so arranged on an extension of the floor of the drilling rigging that the chain 42 which is used for connecting the motor A with the sprocket 4-3 of the line shaft 44 can be removed from the sprocket and passed over the sprocket 24 of the pulley 22. Thus when it is desired to bail a well being drilled, it is simply necessary to move the drilling line to one side and to remove the chain 42 from the sprocket 13 on the line shaft and pass it over the sprocket 24: of the pulley 22 so that when the motor A is started up, the pulley will. be rotates. The cable on the driven from the band Wheel.
drum 10 is then passed over a sheave at the top of the tower-and brought down and attached to the bailer. Then the clutch lever is shifted to place the clutch members in engagement: with each otherso that the drum will be driven from the combined pulley and sprocket. .Thus there is no time or labor lost in removing the drilling line and sub stitut ing the bailing line.
When the device is to be used on a standard rigging, it is placed under the tower, as shown in'Figure 3 and short bull ropes 45 are passed over the bandwheel 4:6 and in engagement with two of the grooves 23 of the pulley'22 so that the pulley will be In order to pass the cable over the sheaves, it is attached to the end of the rod line and the bull wheel 47 operated to pull the rod line and thus the cable over a sheave at the top of the tower so that it is not necessary to carry the cable to the top of the tower by manualmeans. After the bailing has been If any ofthe teeth 17 on the hub 16 i should break or the flange of the cap 15 should wear, said cap 15 can be removed and a new one substituted therefor.
I As before stated, this improvement will save considerable time and labor in the oil fields and other places where wells are drilled as the auxiliary drum can have its cable readily attached to'bailers and the like with but little less of time and without removing the'drilling linefrom the drum' and blocks.
Figure 3 shows the frame 1 being held in place on the rigging floor by means of chains 48 passing aroundjthe frame and some of the sills of the rigging.
It is. thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended. claims.- What I claim is 1. A device of the class described oomprising a support, shaft supported thereby, a drum rotatablymounted on the shaft, a cap removably' connected with one end of the drum, the flange of the cap forming a brake drum, a brake band on said brake drum, clutch teeth on the cap, a pulley rotatably mounted on the shaft, and a 1novable clutch part carried by the pulley for connecting the pulley with the clutch part of the cap. 7
2. A device of the class described comprising a support, a shaft supported thereby, a drum rotatably mounted onv the shaft, a pulley rotatably mounted on the shaft and having a sleeve-like extension surrounding the shaft and abutting one end of the drum,
teeth on said end of the drum, a clutch @01- 1e engage and disengage the teeth on the drum. 15
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
