N. SHELLABARGER AMUSEMENT DEVICE Filed Aug. 28. 1926 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 attocnuz Patented Feb. 21, 1928.
UNITED STATES NICHOLAS SHELLABARGER, OF PORTLAND, OREGON AMUSEMENT nnvrcn.
Application filed August 28, 1926. Serial No. 132,187.
The primary object of my device is to provide an amusement device for use in play grounds, at the home and school and all places where amusements are provided for children, in a form that may be used in a multiplicity of ways, as a merry-go-round, operating about a horizontal supporting member and wherein the occupants may be made to entirely complete a circular rotation about ahorizontal support.
A further object of my new and improved amusement device consists in providing simple and eflicient means for transforming my device into a plain swing, or into a teeter board or a combination of the twomovements of a see saw movement as well as a movement up and down. Simple means being provided for adjusting the supportlng members'to compensate in the difference in weight of the users of the device.
A still further object of my device consists in providing means for stoppmg the supporting member at predetermined polnts and maintaining the same in a relatively stationary condition.
A still further object of my device consists in providing standards of support for the different members that may be easily erected and taken down to make the same portable in effect.
A still further object of my device consists in providing means that will bring the supporting member to a position of rest at the same'place at all times and that will maintain the same in a position of rest until released from locked position. 7
A still further object of my device is to provide a simple amusement device that will give a variety of amusements and yet be simply constructed and that w1ll contlnue to operate over long periods wthout expensive repairs.
With these and incidental objects in vlew, the invention consists in certain novel features, the essential elements of which are set forth in the appended claims, and a preferred form of embodiment is hereinafter shown with reference to the drawings which accompany, and form a part of this specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the assembled device with the seats and the supportin side rails therefor illustrated in horizonta position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated.
Fig. 3 .is a front view'of the seat support taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device with the supporting side rail members and the seats secured thereto in position for use as a teeter board.
Fig. 5 is an end view of thedevice with the side rails positioned for use as a swing, with one of the seats removed from the supporting rails. 1
Fig. 6 is an end view of the frame structure illustrating the framed members being used as'supports for rings.
Fig. 7 is an end view illustrating the frame structure in position and used as a support for a tumbling bar.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
I make my frame structure preferablyof pipe material the side members of which are made in the form of an A-frame, having two legs, 1 and '2, disposed on either side thereof, meeting at a common point 3. The structural member 5 is formed of a' rigid material and is adapted to receive the leg members 1 and 2 in sockets formed therein; and having a vertical standard 4 disposed on the upper side thereof. The
side frames are held in spaced relationship Disposed midway of the cross bar 6 is a j'ournaled bearing 9.
When the dBVlCGlS intended and erected for use as a merry-go-round, two side members, 10 and 11, are journaled about the shaft 12 that is supported on either end within the structural member 5. J ournaled bearings 13 and 14: being secured to the side rails 10 and 11, and the cross bar 12 is journaled therein. This permits of a free rotation of the side rails 10 and 11 about the shaft 12. Seats 15 and 16 are positioned at either end of the side rails and are supported in position by yokes 17 and 18. The yokes 17 and 18 are journaled within bearings 19 and 20. The bearings 19 and 20, for supporting the yokes and the seat members, are in slidable relationship with the side rails and may be maintained in fixed position by the set screws 21 and 22. This compensating movement of the seat supporting bearings and yokes is necessary to provide means for compensating for a difference in weight of the users of the device. A brake drum 23 'is maintained in fixed position with the side supporting frame members and has imposed about the outer periphery thereof a brake band 24. A spring 25 normally maintains the brake band in tight relationship with the brake. drum, but the same may be released by pulling the brake rod 26, thus flexing the spring 25 and releasing the band from the drum. To maintain the brake band in released position from the drum the rod 26 carries a ring 27 which may be made to engagestop pin 28,. disposed in one of the side rail-members.
A safety bar 29 is hinged about a pin 30,
associated with a bracket disposed in one,
side. of the seat members. The swinging end of thesafetybar 29 may be made to engage latch bar 31, and be maintained in position by'the-string 82.
VVhenit is desired to use one of my new and improved devices for a teeter board, the cross shaft 12; isdisposed Within-the journal bearing 9, and as this shaft supports the side rail members 10 and 11, by means of the journals 13 and 14, a partial rotation is secured between the shaft and the bearings to forma teeter board of the side rail members. The seat members being used as heretofore described. Should it be desired to use one of my amusement devices in supporting a pair of rings, the side. railmembers-are removed from the frame structure together withtheseats and the cross shaft. 12 at which time'the rings 3.4;, together with their supporting members 36. and 37, are supported upon theirv cross shaft 35.
My device can also beused as a pendulumswing by removing the cross shaft 12 from the support members 5, and thebearings-l3 and; 14. Then one of the. seats and its supporting yoke is removed. from its bearing and the shaft inserted instead, this positions the cross shaft 12 at one end of the side mem bers l0 and 11, the cross shaft is then supto accomplish the objects primarily stated, it
is not intended to confine the invention to the specificform. herein. described, as 1t 1s sus- .ceptibie of embodiment in various limited ways all. coming within the claims which follow..
-What I claim is g 1,111. a device of the class described, the combination with supporting members provided with means for supporting a cross shaft at optional heights, and a cross shaft, of a. pair of parallel spaced members bearings at the opposite. ends of said members, removable seats pivotally carried. by said bearings, other bearings intermediate the ends of said members rotatably supporting said members to said shaft to form a revolving swing; and means permittingsaid last mentioned bearings to be removed from said shaft and the bearings supporting one scope of' the of the seats substitutedv to form. a pendulum" Swing.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination. with. supporting members provided with means forv supporti'nga cross shaft at optional heights. and a cross shaft; of a pair of parallel spaced members; bearings at the opposite ends of said members and. movable relative thereto; removable seats pivotally supported by said bearings; other bearings intermediate the ends of said members rot-atably supportingsaid members to said shaft to form a revolving swing; and means. permitting the last mentioned bearing tov be removed from sald shaft and thebearingssupporting: one ofthe seats substituted to form a pendulum swing.-
