This invention relates to dust mops, and the objects are to provide a mop having the new and improved features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
The invention isshown by way f illustration in the accompanying drawings, in
which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the mop head showing the manner in which the frame is attached; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed cross-section showing the manner in which the yarn or strands mop head.
are secured to the The mop head comprises a backing piece 1 of canvas or other material of like on the top of which is arranged a li nature ning 2 of alpaca or other similar light material for presenting a finished appearance. The
backing piece 1 and lining 2 are substantial ly triangular in shape, embracing the marginal portionsand folded over or of the backing 1 and lining 2 is a strip 3, the upper edge portion of which is doubled over, as indicated at 4; and lies The marginal strip 3 extends around the edge of the backing 1, as in Fig. 1.
Secured to the underside of the by stitching 5 extending through a are strands or yarn crosswise of the strip 3 with the lengths extending inwardly and the lengths extending outwardly. Fig. 2 the strands extending inwardl against the lining 2. entirely shown strip 3 tape 6,

dust extend a considerable the outer sides of the mop beyond is further to be noted that the shorter lengths of the strands form a padded center for the mop and marring eliminate any liability of the mop The stitching 5 is at the outer side of the tape 6 and strip 3, and extending through the tape 6, strip 3, backing 1, and lining 2 at the inner side of the tape are stitches 8. The
folded-over portion 1 of the strip 0 is securely held in place by stitches 9, which pass through the several parts as shown, this manner, the strands are fixedly place.
and in held in It will be readily observed that this mop head lends itself admirably to quantity production in that the yarn or stran ds may Serial No. 167,936. 2
be first sewed tothe tape Sand strip 8, and subsequently the backing 1, lining 2 and folded-over portion 4 may be secured to gether by the strips 8 and 9, as heretofore described. V
Secured to the backing 1 and lining 2 as by the stitches S, is a fabric piece forming a pocket at the front end portion of the mop head. Similarly secured to the mop head at the rearend portion and at opposite sides thereof, are fabric flaps 11, which are looped to receive a cord 12. These parts form attaching means for the mop head so that the latter may be conveniently attached tov a Ira-me.
The frame to which the mop head is attached is composed of a triangularly shaped wire body portion 13, the front end of which extends into the pocket formed by the fabric 7 piece 10, and the rear end portions are en.- gaged by the flaps 11. Formed on the rear end portion of the body portion is a reentrant U-shaped part 14, to which a ferrule 15 is pivoted. Fixed to the ferrule 15 by a one inch clearance. It will also slip between the legs of pieces of furniture much more easily than any other construction of which I am aware. Every metal part of the mop is enclosed so that there is no possible chance of marring furniture or, base boards of a room. It is to be understood that the metal ferrule 15 connecting the handle to the U- shaped part 14: may be covered with .a rubber sleeve, if desired, to mitigate against liability of marring furniture from this art. v p WVhile I have shown and described a construction which is the best form known to me at the present time, it is to be understood that numerous changes in details of construction and arrangement may be effected without departing from the invention, especially. as defined in the appended claims.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent is:
1. A mop comprising a backing, a fabric strip folded over the marginal portion of said backing, mop strands disposed crossstrip folded over the marginal portion-of said backing with the edge port-ion of the stripvon the upper side of the" backing cloubled on itself, mop strands disposed crosswise ofthe underside of saidmarginal por tion, a tape under said strands, and means extending through said backing, folded strip, doubled edge portion, tape and strands for holding said parts together.
3. A mop comprising a backing, a fabric strip folded over the marginal. portion of said backing, mop strands disposed cross Wise of, and under saidmarginal portion, a
tape under said strands, means to secure said said backing, a doubled edge portion on said strip engaging the upper side of said back- 1 mg, moplstra-nds secureditothe underside of V a pocketat the forward end ofsaid backing, flexibletabs at the rear end said backing,
of said back-ing on opposite sides thereof, and.- av triangular frame disposed in: said pocket and engaged-bysaid-tabs,
In testimony whereof I. have hereunto signedmy name to this specification.
