Description
UNIT
*ll STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. HEWEI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HAWLEY D. CLAPP.
SCREWWRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,659, dated June 27, 1840.
17 b all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY IV. Hnwn'r, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Trenches and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a cylindrical tube with a screw cut upon part of its exterior surface, the other part of said surface being made octagonal or many sided for the purpose of moving said tube with the fingers, which tube is placed, and revolves, upon that bar of the wrench to which the fixed j aw is attached. To the bar of the movable jaw is firmly attached a nut having a female Screw corresponding with the thread upon the tube. By means of the whole arrangement the movable jaw of the wrench may be adjusted to any required distance from the fixed aw, and used with one hand without shifting the position of the hand, and further the parts of the wrench are much simplilied and strengthened.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
No. 2 of the drawings annexed is a perspective view of my improved screw wrench. No. l 1s a longitudinal section ot the wrench.
A is the principal bar of the wrench, to which the fixed jaw is attached.
C is a cylindrical tube revolving upon the bar A and having a thread cut upon part of its exterior surface, as seen in the drawings. That part of the tube next to the handle of the wrench is cut into an Octagonal form for the more easy turning of the tube by the lingers.
D is a nut adapted to the screw on C and is firmly attached to the bar of the movable j aw E.
F is the handle of the wrench.
It will be seen that if the tube C be made to revolve, the movable jaw will advance or recede, according to the direction in which the tube is turned. By this arrangement the wrench may be adjusted and used with one hand with the greatest ease, although the arm be extended to its full length while using the wrench.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Cutting the male screw upon the tube C which revolves upon the main bar A in combination with the nut D attached to the jaw E as herein described.
HENRY W. HEI/VET.
