Description

S. HAFFTER.
Cistern-Cover.
No.l65,997 Paxentedlulyzmsv.
N. PETERS, lHOTLITHOGRAPIIER. WISNINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEBASTIAN HAFFTER, OF HIGHLAND, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CISTERN-COVERS.V
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,997, dated July 27, 1875; application filed May 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN HAEETER, of Highland, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gistern-Gover, of which the following is a specification z In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view 5 and Fig. 2, a vertical central section on the line c c, Fig. l, of my improved cistern or well cover; and Figs. 3 and 4, respectively, show supporting standards and casing for the pump-stock or pumpchain tube.
Similar letters of'reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide for cisterns and wells a strong and substantial cover or platform, that admits regular access to the well for cleaning and repairing, protects the water therein against the entering of impurities, and supports the pumpstock or chain-tube in readily detachable manner without requiring the removing of the cover.
The invention consists of a lianged castiron Well-cover, provided with supporting standards or casing for the pump-stock or pumpchain tube, a hinged lid, and filteringbasket below the lid.
In the drawing, A represents the cistern or well cover, made of suitable size to close the top of the cistern, with a circumferential flange extending beyond the brick Wall of the cistern, for protecting the same against the cular recesses a at the lower part of the same admitting the Water-conveying pipes to enter the inside of the cistern. An oblong recess,
` b, of the cover serves to pass the pump-stock or pump-chain tube C through the same, which is rigidly held in position by side standards or a casing, D, secured to projecting lugs d l-of the cover, and attached by screw-bolts e to the pump-stock. A large recess, f, of the cover, in front of the pumpstOck, is covered by a lid, E, which is hinged to the side standards or casing D, to swing up to give convenient access to the interior of the cistern. The lid E is shaped in the form of a spout, and rimmed at the side for conveying off the surplus water, a bottom rim, f', closing tightly the recess f.
A filtering basket, F, filled with gravel, charcoal, or other suitable material,` is hung in suitable manner below the lid E, so that the water entering from the supply sides of the eistern is passed through the iilter, the material of which may be readily replaced without difficulty whenever it is required. The cylindrical portion of the cover gives strength to the top part of the cistern, and the closed lid keeps out all impurities, prevents the falling in of rats or other substances, and avoids any danger of accidents to children by keeping it locked in suitable manner to the platform part. The cover admits ready access to the cistern for repairs, and allows the taking out of the pump stock or casing without removing the Well-cover.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by LettersV Patent- 1. A cover for Wells or cisterns, fitting by cylindrical and ianged part on the top of the cistern, and having recess for pump-stock and entrance-opening covered by hinged lid, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combinationof the cistern cover or platform, having oblong recess and fasteninglug, with the pump-stock or pump-chain tube, and the supporting standards or casing attached thereto, substantially as set forth.
