This invention relates to certain newand useful improvements in guards for punch presses, and relates more particularly to a guard which automatically acts to brush the hand of the operator out of the space between the plunger and the die upon downward movement of the former, thereby moving the handsof the operator. out of the danger zone and accordingly out of the path of the descending plunger. 5
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a device of this type which is of simple and-economical construction, which involves a minimum of parts and which also provides acompact assemblage of the parts and .furtherone wherein the parts are relatively small and occupy but little space.
Further, the invention aims to providea device of this type which is positive and effective in its action and which can be easily and uickly adjusted so. as to vary the relation and the bed or die of the press,

In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the invention applied to a punch press of conven- .tional form Fig. 2 is a side elevation;

Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the guard supporting post.
The press depicted inthe drawings is of conventional form and includes a frame 1 having a base 2 upon which latter is dis posed a bed or die 3, the latter underlying the usual plunger 4 that is carried by the head 17 which latter is vertically reciprocated by means of the crank 5 on the shaft 6 driven by wheel 7. It will be understood however, that theinvention can be applied to. other forms of presses, and in proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a post or column 8 is secured to the base 2 and is provided with a turnable head 9 that may be adjusted by means of a wrench and the wrench holes 10, and which head is held arm 12 is pivoted to the post 8 so as to move etween the hand engaging element in it will be noted that such end overlies the ward end 13 preferably offset and curved so as to engage the handof the operator and brush or wipe the latter out of the danger zone.
As shown in Fig. 5., the movable arm 12 is journalled upon a hub 9 forming part of the piece 9. The hub is of such weight as to permit the arm 12 to move freely when actuated. A washer 9 is placed on top of this hub so as to -hold the arm in position and the jam nuts 1111 are then moved to lock the. washer. Below the part are placed apair of jam nuts 10 and 10*. The post 8 is secured to the base 2'by' a down- Wardly extending bolt 8 orother suitable means. By loosening the jam nuts I1111 the member- 9 can be screwed up to the desired position and the nuts 10 and 10* are then moved to engage the lower face of member 9 to retain the same in its adjusted position. r
The arm 12 is pivoted intermediate its ends and the rear end or tail 14 thereof is' connected to a coil spring 15 which latter is $0 in turn connected to the frame 1, so that the end .13 of the arm 12 normally occupies the dotted line position of Fig. 4., and wherebed or die 3; V
A cam plate-16' is seoured'to the recipro- V eating head 17 of the press, which head ca-r .ries the punch 4. The cam 16 is formed with an elongated slot 18 through which screws 19' are extended and secured to'the head 17 so as to thereby enable adjustment of the cam 16 as may be found desired or necessary. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the cam 16 is of somewhat Z-shape and has its effective portion disposed in a. 95, vertical plane and beveled as indicated at 19. I
In operation upon downward movement of the head 17 and therewith the punch 4, it will be seen that the inclined edge 19 of the cam will engage the tail 14 of the arm 12 and swing or move the latter from the dotted line position of Fig. 4 to the full line posi tion, so that should the hand of the operator be in the danger zone or otherwise stated, between the bed or die 3v and the down- 5 wardly moving punch 4,. the hand will be brushed or moved out of the danger'zone and accordingly from beneath the downcoming punch 4.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that 1s but a single straight, pivoted arm is em ployed and which is mounted on and at one and projects but slightly thereabove, so that the press is side of the base of the press left substantially free of interfering parts.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. In a press guard, a post formed for securement to the base of a press, an arm pivoted intermediate its ends to the post,
means to effect vertical adjustment of the.
arm so as to vary the space between same and the base, a spring connected to the rear end of the arm and formed for attachment to the press frame so as to normally dispose the front of the arm over the die of the press, anda substantially Z-shaped cam having means to attach same to the reciprocating head of the press,,said cam having its lower end formed with a vertical part'having an inclined edge engageable with the rear end of the. arm.
2. In apress guard, a post formed for securement to the base of a press, an arm pivoted intermediate its ends to the post, means to effect vertical adjustment of the arm so as to vary the space between the same and the base, a spring'connected to the rear vend of the arm and formed for attachment to the press frame so as to normally dispose the front of the arm over the die of the 7 press, and a cam formed for attachment to the reciprocating head of the press and engageable with the rear end of the arm.
3. In a press guard, a guard, means to pivot the guard for horizontal movement between its ends to the base of the press, meanstotension the guard, and means operable by the reciprocatinghead of the press and engageable with the rear end of the guard for moving the front end thereof so as to'leave said end free for engagementv mount the guard between its ends for swing- I with the hand of the operator, means to tension the guard connected to the 3 rear end i i thereof, and means engageable with said rear end of the guard to actuate the latter'from a q l i 6. means carried by the post to effect vertical adjustment of the arm with respect to the base, and means carried by the reciprocating head of a press and engageable with said arm to effect movement of the arm in a horizontal plane over the base. I
