UNITED STATES r are JONATHAN LUCAS/OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, 11381331103. "10 LUCAS-LA1VJIBQEN -fhltl CORTECRATION, 9F NEW YORK, N. Y., .A. COBBPORATION 01? NEW YORK.
. Application-filed September 18, 1926. Serial No. 136;257.
lily invention relates to looms and has for its object to provide a simpleand novel 591 in section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
As shown in the drawings, the customary reed is mounted in the reed cap 11 and bottom beam 12, for instance, as illustrated in Fig. 1; said reed capll and bottom beam 12 extending between and being carried by side arms The latter are supported by means of rollers 14, arranged to travel in guide ways 15, fixed at the proper points upon the loom irame 16; the opposite ends 95 of the side arms 13, are pivotally connected at 1'7, with beater cams 18, pivoted at 19 upon the loom frame 16, as shown in Fig. 1. The heater cams 18 are constructed in the term of lovers each of which is provided Till with a cam slot 20, consisting of adjacent and continuing portions a, i) and 0, the purpose and operation OillWlllCll will appear more fully hereinafter. The am slots20 each zuxjzonnnodate a cam roller 21 journalled 22, :tub crumed at 23 upon the frame 16 the rocker arms 22 are oscillated in the manner to be more fully set torth hereinafter by means of pitmcn 2%. each of which is pivotally connected at 25 with a rocker arm 22, and at 26 with a crank disc 27, mountedupon a shaft 28, journalled in suitable bearings; it
will be understood that the shaft- 28 is me chanically actuated through the medium of 53 any suitable mechanism.
" the rocker arms 22 in an upward direction and thereby cause the rollers 21 to travel upwardly in the cam slots 20. The continued rotation of the discs 27 finally causes the rocker a "ms 22 to be rocked downwardly and the rollers 21 to travel toward the lower understood through the reed 1n the well known way.
ends of the cain slots 20. its the rollers 21 travel upwardlyytor instance, from the posit-ion shown in Fig. l, the sections 71 of the slots 20 will be traversed lZilCPlJY, and will, accordingly, s vinp; thecani levers 18 toward the left in Fig. 1 'llhia movement will be communicated to the side arms 13; and thereby cause the supporting rollers i l to travel lengthwise of the guideways 15 to fard the front of the loom. As the rollers 21 coin tinue theirupward travel in the cam slots 5? ,they will. enter the parts 0 thereof to completothe forward swinging of the coin levers 18. lhereed 10.will partake of the movement of the side arms 113 and accordingly, will ride forwardly and pack the filler threads in the conven ionai manner, it being:
that the warp threads Pt its the rollers 21. begin their travel in the slots 20. in the reversed direction the cam levers 18 will. amordingly, be pivotalllv moved toward the right in F 1 and will impart a corresponding movement to the side arms 13 and thereby return the reed 10 to the position shown in Fig. 1. its the downward movement ot' the cam rollers 21 continues beyond the point illustrated in Fig.1. 1 said rollers 21 will traverse the sections a, of the cam slots 20; as the curves of these portions (Zi-IQPYQSQDt arcs of circles having the pivots 23 as centers the movement of the rollers 21 in the portions 4 of the slots 20., will cause no pivotal movement of the cam levers 18; the same is true when the rollers 21 traveltrom the lower ends ot' the slots 20 to the position shown in Fig. 1. In other words the period of time required by the rollers to move downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1, to an extreme lowermost position and back again, may be rcferred to as a dwell during which the cam levers 18, the side arms 18, and consequent-, ly the reed 10, remain at rest. It will be noted that the threads or yarn pass from the customary warp beam 29 and that the woven material passes over the customary breast beam to the take-up roll in the usual manner.
YVith the improved beater arm mechanism, the reed is reciprocated in a horizontal direction toward and away from the packing; position, whereby the packing ot the tiller threads is accomplished with a maximum oi? efficiency and in a uniform manner. The
mechanism illustrated and described Wherehy the horizontal reciprocation of the reed is accomplished, is reduced to the utmost simplicity and causes the reed to describe rapid HIOVQIHGIHS toward and from the packi115;- position and to occupy position 01 rest in order to permit the tiller threads to be laid by the shuttle. It will, of course, be 1111- delstood that the devices herein shown and described, are constructed and arranged to operate in proper synchronism with the re maining mechanism of the 100111 which may lie of any cmiventional type.
Various changes in the specific form shown and dcscrilaid may be madewithin the scope ot the cleans without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1 claim:
'1. In a loom, lmrizontal guides, a reed, side arms carrying said reed, rollers movalne in said horizontal guides and carrying said s'de arms, oscillating levers connected with said side arms and provided with cam slots, and mechanism cooperating with said cam slots to oscillate said cam levers and thereby reciprocate said side arms and reed in horizontal directions.
2. In a loom, horizontal guides, a reed,
side arms carrying said reed, supporting rollers movable in said horizontal guides and carrying said side arms, oscillating levers connected with said side arms and provided with cam slots, rocker arms, cam rollers carried by said rocker arms and arranged to traverse said cam slots and mechanisn'i tor actuating said rocker arms to shift said cam rollers lengthwise of said cam slots, whereby said side arms and reed are reciprocated in horizontal directions.
In a loom, horizontal guides, a reed, side arms carrying said reed, supporting ml 1- ers movable in said horizontal guides and carrying said side arms, oscillating levers connected with said side arms and iu'ovidcd with cam slots, rocker arms, cam rollers carried by said rocker arn'isand arranged to traverse said cam slots, rotatable crank discs. and pitmen pivotally connected with said discs and with said rocker arms arranged to actuate the latter to shift said rollers lengthwise of said cam slots whereby said side arms and reed are reciprocated in horizontal directions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
